Final Score: Miami 2, Philadelphia 0
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jose Fernandez dazzled Philadelphia hitters over seven scoreless innings to guide the Miami Marlins to a 2-0 win over the Phillies on Saturday.
Fernandez (1-2) allowed just one hit and two baserunners during his stint and retired 17 straight batters before issuing a walk in the seventh inning. The 20-year-old rookie also struck out a career-high nine to earn his first career win in the majors.
"Jose was great out there. He had command of the strike zone. Their lineup is a tough lineup to plow through, but he was great," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
Marcell Ozuna and Chris Valaika both clubbed solo homers for the Marlins, who had dropped three straight entering the contest.
Freddy Galvis provided the lone hit for the Phillies, who were shut out for the fifth time this season. Cole Hamels (1-4) allowed four hits, including both homers, while striking out six over eight innings.
"I went out and I was able to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish except for that part when you get that 'W' by your name," said Hamels.
Ozuna hit a towering homer to left field to open the second inning and Valaika cracked a one-out shot to left-center in the third to put the Marlins up for good.
Galvis picked up a one-out single in the first inning after lacing a grounder to left field, but Fernandez was dominating from there on out. The hard- throwing righty struck out the next two hitters and navigated his was through the Phillies lineup until walking Galvis to open the seventh. Fernandez settled down, though, and struck out the next three hitters to put an exclamation point on his gem.
Mike Dunn worked a perfect eighth and Steve Cishek worked around a ninth- inning walk to earn his fourth save of the season.
Ozuna's homer was the first of his career. Over five games since replacing injured-slugger Giancarlo Stanton, Ozuna is batting .400 (6-for-15) with one homer, two doubles and two RBI ... Fernandez has struck out 32 batters over six starts this season ... Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Delmon Young, the Phillies 3, 4, and 5 hitters went 0-for-10 with seven strike outs ... Philadelphia did not have a batter advance past first base.
