Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees designated infielder Reid Brignac for assignment prior to Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees acquired Brignac from the Colorado Rockies on May 18 to add depth at shortstop with Derek Jeter still recovering from last October's broken ankle, but he batted just .114 with no RBI in 17 games with the club.
New York selected the contract of infielder Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to fill Brignac's role as a utility infielder.
Gonzalez, whom the Yankees obtained in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in early May, went 3-for-9 in three games with New York last month before being outrighted off the roster following Brignac's acquisition.
The 30-year-old has played in 416 major league games with five different teams (the Yankees, Washington, San Diego, Texas and the Cubs) and owns a .242 lifetime average with four home runs and 87 RBI.
