NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, November 16th (All times Eastern)

    Edmonton Oilers (4-15-2) at Calgary Flames (6-10-3), 10 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Calgary Flames hope to avoid their longest losing streak in almost four years on Saturday night. They'll attempt do so against an Edmonton Oilers club that is last in the NHL standings.

The Flames are on their first five-game slide since March 29-April 6 of last season. They have dropped the first two of a three-game homestand, giving them four straight setbacks as the host.

Calgary didn't stand much of a chance last time out, getting routed 7-3 by the Dallas Stars, who got four goals from Tyler Seguin and six points by Jamie Benn.

Matt Stajan scored twice for the Flames, including once shorthanded, and David Jones added a goal and an assist in defeat.

Calgary goaltender Reto Berra stopped just 13-of-17 shots before being lifted in favor of Karri Ramo in the second period. Ramo allowed three goals on 15 chances in relief.

"We need to get back to our game and get back to our game quick," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said.

The Flames are hoping to avoid their longest losing streak since an 0-6-3 skid from Jan. 11-28, 2010.

Calgary defenseman Ladislav Smid will face his former Edmonton club just over a week after getting dealt to the Flames by the Oilers on Nov. 8. Saturday will mark his third game with the Flames.

"It's exciting," Smid told Calgary's official website. "It didn't take long and we are already squaring off against my former team. I'm obviously excited."

The Oilers come to town riding their third five-game losing streak of the season. They did manage to avoid a fourth straight shutout loss at home, getting a goal from Nail Yakupov in last night's 3-1 setback to the San Jose Sharks.

Yakupov scored 12:48 into the second period with the Oilers already down three goals. His third tally of the season and second in three games snapped Edmonton's goal drought at home at 214 minutes, 52 seconds.

"We played better in the second and third (period). Guys played hard and we had some chances. It is tough to come into the locker room after a loss. There isn't much you can say," said Yakupov.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 34 shots in the loss, Edmonton's 10th in 11 games. It last lost six straight from April 4-16 of last season and the club sits last in the overall NHL standings with 10 points.

The Flames and Oilers split four meetings a season ago, but Calgary has won 11 of the previous 15 overall and 11 of the last 13 played at home.
