NHL Preview from The Sports Network

Monday, December 16th (All times Eastern)

    Dallas Stars (15-11-5) at Colorado Avalanche (21-9-1), 9 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche kick off a home- and-home set on Monday night, with the two clubs getting together in Denver at the Pepsi Center.

The Avs will visit the Stars on Tuesday and have won the previous two meetings this season. They notched a 3-2 home win on Oct. 15 before opening November with a 3-2 overtime triumph in Dallas.

Colorado has won four of the past six meetings overall and six of the last nine in Denver.

The Avs have lost three of their past four games overall, but did get a point last time out on Saturday versus the Minnesota Wild. Colorado seemed in line to get the win, but yielded a game-tying goal with 3:53 left in regulation and ended up suffering a 2-1 shootout loss.

Mikko Koivu scored the winner in the shootout, flying in on net and lifting a backhander under the crossbar for the lead. Josh Harding then sealed the win with a glove save on Ryan O'Reilly.

Maxime Talbot scored the only goal for the Avs with Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 shots.

Talbot's goal came when Cory Sarich sent a one-timer on the net that hit off the right skate of Talbot and in.

"I had a shot before that I thought was better," said Sarich. "This shot was a bit right and where I wanted it to go, and we got a lucky bounce."

The Avs have not been getting the bounces on the power play, going 0-for-26 on the man advantage over the past 10 games. They failed on both chances versus the Wild.

The Stars come in having avoided a third straight loss with a 6-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Dallas broke a tie game during a five-minute power play, getting goals from Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

The extended man advantage came after Winnipeg's Anthony Peluso took a boarding major and game misconduct late in the second period for a hit on Alex Goligoski.

Benn broke a 3-3 tie with a blast from the right faceoff dot short-side at 17:46, while Seguin scored on a one-timer from the top of the left circle 63 seconds later.

"I thought we had some great opportunities and we kept playing," Dallas head coach Lindy Ruff remarked. "It was disappointing to get scored against there late but we played hard all night."

Benn and Seguin finished with two goals apiece, with the former snapping an 11-game goal drought. Seguin added two assists.

Colton Sceviour scored his first career goal in his NHL debut, while Kari Lehtonen made 34 saves and Sergei Gonchar set a career high with four assists.
