NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Edmonton

    (Thursday, March 6th)

Final Score: Edmonton 3, NY Islanders 2 (OT)

Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Hall notched the game-winner as the Edmonton Oilers scored three unanswered goals to top the New York Islanders in overtime, 3-2, at Rexall Place.

Sam Gagner took the puck off Islanders defenseman Brian Strait in transition through the neutral zone and deked past a sliding defender to fire a shot that deflected off Hall's stick and past Evgeni Nabokov into the net.

Philip Larsen and Ryan Smyth both lit the lamp in the third period and Ben Scrivens turned aside 32 shots in Edmonton's second straight win.

"I'd rather we didn't wait until the last four minutes of the second period to get going," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said. "We have been preaching the way to play and it wasn't until near the end of the second that we understood what we needed to do and we carried it on to the third."

Smyth moved past Wayne Gretzky to tie Glenn Anderson for first place on the Oilers all-time power-play goal list with 126 tallies.

Frans Nielsen and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, who have lost three of their last four. Nabokov surrendered three goals on 29 shots.

"At some point, they're going to have to realize those little things, the moment you stop moving your feet or get out of position it's going to cost you," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said.

The Islanders got on the board halfway through the first frame. Nielsen went in on a 2-on-1 with Cal Clutterbuck and fired a shot past Scrivens while shorthanded to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.

Lee added to the lead after he tipped in Strait's shot from the point with 1:39 left in the first.

After a scoreless second, Edmonton cut the lead in half on the power play at 8:28 of the third. Justin Schultz kept the puck in the zone and Jordan Eberle sent the puck across the ice to Smyth, who wristed the puck home for his ninth of the season.

Larsen knotted the game when he tracked down a loose puck off the left boards and moved in on net to sneak a wrister through a maze of players and past Nabokov.

    Game Notes

Edmonton defenseman Jeff Petry left the game with back spasms in the first ... The Oilers have now won four straight at Rexall Place against the Islanders ... The last time the Islanders won in Edmonton was Mar. 13, 2003 ... David Perron played in his 400th career NHL game.
