NHL Game Summary - Toronto at Boston

    (Tuesday, January 14th)

Final Score: Toronto 4, Boston 3

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Bozak scored twice and added an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs survived to take a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.

James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist, Jake Gardiner scored, and Phil Kessel tallied three assists for the Maple Leafs, who have won their past two games. Jonathan Bernier stopped 38 shots.

"Well we've been giving a better effort that's for sure," said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. "And we've raised our compete level. And we're going to have to continue to do that to get points. And that's the most frustrating part for our hockey club has been that we haven't been able to achieve that with any consistency. And that's frustrating for the coaching staff, that's for sure."

Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who have dropped three of four. Gregory Campbell also scored while Tuukka Rask stopped 22 shots in the loss.

"Too many breakdowns and also I think we are forcing plays that we shouldn't and sometimes we're not in sync, we're not forcing where all guys go as a whole and together," said Bergeron. "And obviously, when there's only one guy going, that opens up too many lanes and they're going to eat you alive if you do that, then if you don't, if you aren't on the same page."

Toronto took a 4-2 lead at the one-minute mark of the third period as Bozak sent a hard pass from the left boards over to the right circle where van Riemsdyk wristed it home.

Boston cut its deficit to one at 9:35 of the third as Daniel Paille sent a quick backhand pass from behind the net to the left side where Campbell quickly lifted in a backhander.

The Bruins, though, were unable to net the equalizer despite several quality chances and pulling Rask with over a minute to play for an extra attacker.

Boston got on the board at 3:38 of the first as Reilly Smith fought through the defense and got a backhand on net, with the rebound coming to the left side and Marchand snapping it in.

Toronto tied the game just over two minutes later, as Carl Gunnarsson's slap shot from the high slot was stopped, but Bozak was there to slam home the rebound.

The Bruins again took the lead at 10:48 of the first after Bergeron stuffed in a backhand from the right side, but the Maple Leafs tied the game at 12:47 on the power play.

Kessel's pass from the left point was deflected to the low right side by Bozak, with van Riemsdyk picking the puck up and sending it back to the left where Bozak wristed it home.

The only goal of the second period went to Toronto, as a hard pass from the left boards by Kessel to the right circle saw Gardiner wrist it in for a power-play marker and a 3-2 lead at 7:09.

    Game Notes

Toronto hosts Buffalo on Wednesday ... Boston plays in Dallas on Thursday ... Boston had won the previous two games against Toronto this season, and 11 of the past 12, overall ... Toronto went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Boston was 0-for-3.
