NHL Game Summary - Columbus at NY Rangers

    (Monday, January 6th)

Final Score: Columbus 4, NY Rangers 3 (SO)

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Letestu scored the winner in the shootout as the Columbus Blue Jackets took a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on Monday.

Letestu buried a wrister past Henrik Lundqvist on Columbus' first shot and Sergei Bobrovsky made a nice save on a backhand offering from Rick Nash. Ryan Johansen then sealed the win as he faked to the backhand and lifted it high over Lundqvist.

Brandon Dubinsky and James Wisniewski both had a goal and an assist, while Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won two of three.

Bobrovsky played for the first time since straining his groin on Dec. 3 against Tampa Bay. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, who had served as the backup the past two games, stopped 40 shots in the win.

"They had us on our heels for a while there in the third," said Letestu. "But we were able to rally and get a big two points against a real good team that we're fighting for position."

Nash had two goals while Brian Boyle scored the other for the Rangers, who had won three of four coming in. Lundqvist stopped 36 shots in the loss.

"It's a good feeling for everyone in here the way we rallied in the third and we're able to get a point," said Lundqvist. "Of course it would have been nice to get two, but you have to take something positive out of this."

New York trailed by a pair of goals entering the third period, but got one back at 4:53 as John Moore threw a shot on net from the right boards. It broke the stick of Dominic Moore in front, with Boyle picking up the loose puck and sweeping it in to make it a 3-2 game.

Just over two minutes later, the Rangers tied the game on the power play as Nash threw a heavy wrister on net from the high slot that made its way through a screen.

Lundqvist forced overtime thanks to 13 stops, then made six more saves in the extra session to take the game to a shootout. Bobrovsky made 10 saves over the final 25 minutes.

Columbus made it a 1-0 game at 17:07 of the first period, as Wisniewski kept in a clear at the high slot and threw the puck on net, with it getting tipped in by Dubinsky for his eighth of the year.

New York, though, tied the game with 52.8 second left in the first on the power play as Nash's shot from the left circle beat Bobrovsky with Chris Kreider providing a screen.

It took just 61 seconds for the Blue Jackets to take the lead back in the second, as Atkinson caused a turnover in his own zone and went the other way, beating Lundqvist between the pads with a low shot.

The Blue Jackets made it a 3-1 game at 16:47 of the second period, as Dubinsky brought the puck in down the left wing and fired a blind pass the other way. Wisniewski caught up to the puck and wristed it into the left corner for his third of the year.

    Game Notes

New York plays in Chicago on Wednesday ... Columbus hosts Carolina on Friday ... New York went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Columbus was 0-for-3 ... Columbus has taken two of the three games against New York this season.
