NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Calgary

    (Sunday, October 6th)

Final Score: Vancouver 5, Calgary 4 (OT)

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Santorelli scored his second goal of the game 3:17 into overtime Sunday and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 5-4.

The Canucks overcame a 3-1 deficit with three consecutive goals in the third period to take the lead, only to see David Jones tie the game for Calgary with 19 seconds left in regulation.

In overtime, Santorelli started a tic-tac-toe play with Kevin Bieksa and went to the net, where he jammed the final pass in to give the Canucks their second straight win.

The Flames, playing their home opener, got another goal from 18-year-old rookie Sean Monahan but lost for the second time in their three games -- both losses coming after regulation.

Jannik Hansen, Santorelli and Dale Weise all scored in the third period after Monahan had given the Flames a 3-1 lead. Weise's goal made it 4-3 with 3:54 left.

David Booth also scored for the Canucks and Eddie Lack made 32 saves.

"Obviously he gives us a chance," Canucks head coach John Tortorella said of Lack. "It was good to see the team play for him in the third period because he gave us the opportunity."

Mark Giordano and Mikael Backlund had goals for the Flames and Joey MacDonald made 23 saves, including a pair of highlight-reel stops late in the third period.

"We didn't make good enough decisions I thought," Giordano said. "It cost us. We can't let teams grab the momentum like that, especially in our home rink."

Monahan, taken No. 6 by the Flames in this year's draft, has three points in his first three NHL games. He kept the puck on the right side after the Canucks choked off a passing opportunity and beat Lack with a wrist shot 1:47 into the third period.

The Canucks quickly tied it, then went ahead.

Flames forward Curtis Glencross turned the puck over behind the Calgary net and Daniel Sedin found Hansen in front at the 5:01 mark. Santorelli scored 4 1/2 minutes later after a Flames turnover to tie the game.

Chris Higgins had an open net on the right side, but MacDonald scrambled back and blocked the shot with his stick. Moments later, the Flames goalie used his glove to snare a close shot by Brad Richardson.

Richardson, though, got the primary assist on Weise's goal, curling a backhand pass through the crease from behind the net as the Canucks took a 4-3 lead.

Moments after Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman had a one-timer tipped just over the net, the Flames tied the game on Jones' goal, which was reviewed after the winger dove into a pile in the Vancouver crease, getting his stick under defenseman Alex Edler's body.

Earlier, Booth deflected Jason Garrison's point shot past MacDonald to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead 4:47 into the game.

Giordano tied it with 5:28 left in the first period on a wrist shot from the high left side after Jones battled for the puck on the right boards.

Backlund's breakaway goal 11:26 into the second period came after the Flames blocked a shot at their end. Jiri Hudler's outlet pass was tipped forward through center ice by T.J. Galiardi and Backlund beat Lack with a deke to his backhand to make it 2-1.

    Game Notes

The Flames remain home for games against Montreal on Wednesday and New Jersey on Friday ... The Canucks return to Vancouver for three in a row starting with Tuesday's game against New Jersey.
