NFL Game Summary - NY Giants at Indianapolis

    (Sunday, September 19th)

Final Score: Indianapolis 38, NY Giants 14

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Peyton Manning was far more efficient than Eli Manning on Sunday night, as the Indianapolis Colts dominated the New York Giants, 38-14, in a marquee interconference contest at Lucas Oil Stadium.

It was the second head-to-head meeting between the Manning brothers, with Peyton's Colts also getting the better of Eli's Giants via a 26-21 verdict at the Meadowlands in 2006.

Peyton Manning, a four-time MVP, completed 20-of-26 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns, while his younger brother connected on 13-of-24 passes for 161 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick.

Donald Brown and Joseph Addai controlled things on the ground for the Colts (1-1), who bounced back nicely from a 34-24 loss to the Texans last week. Brown carried the ball 16 times for 69 yards and a score, while Addai rushed for 92 yards on 20 carries.

Reggie Wayne led the receiving corps with seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Dallas Clark hauled in five passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

"It was good statement and hopefully we can continue that the rest of the season and keep teams from playing those five, six DBs," Peyton Manning said of the Colts' running game. "You hope the team has to put a linebacker on Dallas or a safety. You feel a lot better about that as opposed to having a corner on Dallas."

Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks each caught a TD pass for the Giants (1-1), who opened the season with a 31-18 win over the Panthers.

Ahmad Bradshaw carried the ball 17 times for 89 yards. A frustrated Brandon Jacobs, who was limited to just eight yards on four touches, threw his helmet into the stands in the third quarter. It was said to be unintentional, but Jacobs spent the rest of the game on the sideline.

"They're the team that was embarrassed or didn't play well last weekend," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "They certainly must have had an outstanding work week and came out and played extremely well. Talk is cheap. They didn't talk about it, they played the game, they played it well."

The Colts got the ball to start the game and marched down the field with ease. Peyton Manning was a perfect 5-for-5 on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that Brown capped with a seven-yard score. Brown found a hole on the left side of the line and scampered into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

New York, which went three-and-out on its first two possessions, was set up at its own 28 following a punt. Faced with a 3rd-and-6, Eli Manning threw an incomplete pass to Nicks. However, a defensive pass interference penalty gave the Giants their initial first down of the contest. The visitors got to the Indianapolis 40 before having to punt early in the second stanza.

The Colts were backed up at their own two following the punt. Indianapolis, though, used multiple runs to get to midfield. From there, Peyton Manning threw a beautiful touchdown pass to Clark for a 14-0 margin with 9:33 left until half.

On the first play of the Giants' ensuing possession, Eli Manning threw a deep pass to Steve Smith, who was double covered. The ball hit off a few hands before Jerraud Powers intercepted the ball for the Colts.

Indianapolis added to its margin with a 38-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri.

New York's disastrous first half continued when Eli Manning fumbled the ball away. Peyton Manning led the Colts right down the field, and his three-yard TD pass to Austin Collie with nine seconds left made it 24-0 at the break.

The Giants finally got on the board early in the third quarter. Manningham beat his man down the left sideline before catching a 54-yard touchdown pass.

However, New York's second possession of the period ended in a turnover. Eli Manning dropped back and was hit hard by Dwight Freeney. The ball came loose and Fili Moala recovered the football in the end zone for an Indianapolis touchdown, which made it 31-7 with 6:27 to go.

Wayne caught a 10-yard TD pass early in the fourth to extend the Colts' margin to 38-7. After Devin Moore lost a fumble late in the frame, Nicks caught a 31- yard touchdown pass to account for the final score.

    Game Notes

The Colts are 8-6 against the Giants in the regular season...Eli Manning had won nine straight September games...Indianapolis has won seven of its last eight home openers...Coughlin is now 0-6 lifetime against the Colts...Indianapolis had 410 yards of total offense, compared to 257 for New York.
