NFL Game Summary - Cleveland at Kansas City

    (Sunday, December 20th)

Final Score: Cleveland 41, Kansas City 34

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Jerome Harrison eclipsed Jim Brown's team record for most single-game rushing yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute, and Josh Cribbs had two kickoff return touchdowns to set an NFL record, as the Cleveland Browns beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 41-34, in a shootout at Arrowhead Stadium.

Harrison carried the ball 34 times for 286 yards and three total scores, eclipsing Brown's mark of 237, set in 1961; it was the third-highest single- game total in NFL history. Cribbs had returns of 100 and 103 yards, respectively, for his seventh and eighth career kickoff return scores to set a new league mark.

"I wanted to (match Jamal Lewis)," Harrison said of the former Brown, who, at 295 yards, has the second-highest single-game rushing total in league history. "I will say that. I wanted to get Jamal. He's a great guy and been a great mentor to me, so to get him would have been awesome. To be in the same category as those other men is a true blessing."

Brady Quinn's arm was not needed for a majority of the game, as he threw only 17 times, completing 10, for 66 yards with two interceptions for the Browns (3-11), who have won two straight games. Quinn added 39 rushing yards in the win.

Jamaal Charles led a suddenly-potent Chiefs (3-11) attack with 154 rushing yards and a score on 25 carries. Matt Cassel completed 22-of-40 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns for an offense that garnered 491 total yards.

Chris Chambers caught five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, and Mark Bradley added a receiving score in defeat.

"When you allow two returns for touchdowns, that's generally not a good thing," said Chiefs head coach Todd Haley. "That's 14 points. We have to cover, a better job of covering. Making tackles when you have a chance to tackle. (Cribbs) is a guy we talked about at the start of the week that could hurt us. We didn't do a good enough job on him."

Phil Dawson missed a 52-yard field goal attempt with 4 1/2 minutes left, giving the Chiefs the ball on their own 42, down 34-27. Cassel proceeded to drive KC for the game-tying touchdown.

Cassel hit Dwayne Bowe for a 23-yard completion on the first play, and Charles scampered down to the Cleveland 16 on 3rd-and-2 for an 11-yard gain with three minutes left. The Chiefs were then faced with a 4th-and-6 from the 12, and Cassel waited and found Bradley in the middle of the end zone for a 34-34 game with 2:20 to play.

Cleveland then gave it to Harrison, who ran for nine yards on the first two plays. On 3rd-and-1, Quinn rolled out to the right and ran down the sideline for a 24-yard gain to the Kansas City 37. Two plays later, from the 28, Harrison burst through the defense and raced all the way to the end zone for yet another touchdown and a 41-34 lead with 44 seconds.

The Chiefs managed to get down to the Browns' 26 in the final 10 seconds, but Cassel's final heave bounced off the crossbar of the uprights and fell to the ground to end the game.

The Browns got on the board on their opening drive, as Dawson drilled a 47- yard field goal for an early advantage.

Each team turned the ball over on the next two possessions, and Ryan Succop ended a KC drive with a 30-yard field goal for a tie game, 3-3.

Cribbs quickly put Cleveland back front, breaking several tackles and returning the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for his seventh career kickoff return touchdown, an NFL record. Dawson then extended the Browns' lead to 13-3 early in the second quarter with a 30-yard field goal.

The Chiefs followed by scoring 21 straight points to storm in front. Cassel hit Chambers for a 39-yard completion down to the Cleveland nine, then hit Chambers again for the touchdown on the next play to finish a six-play, 72- yard drive for a 13-10 game with 10 minutes until halftime.

On KC's next possession, Charles found a seam for a 47-yard touchdown that gave the Chiefs their first lead of the game, 17-13, with a bit over four minutes remaining in the quarter.

Cleveland was forced to punt on its next series, but the snap went awry in the end zone, and Andy Studebaker fell on it before the punter could grab it for a touchdown to give the Chiefs a 24-13 advantage.

Cribbs, though, canceled out KC's fortunate bounce with his second kickoff return score of the game, finding an hole and cutting back to his left to avoid several tacklers for a 103-yard return and a 24-20 game, which was the score at halftime.

The Browns then went ahead on their first touch of the second half, as Harrison simply ran straight through the middle of the defense nearly untouched for a 71-yard touchdown and a three-point advantage.

The Chiefs gained only one first down in the third quarter and never crossed midfield, and the Browns increased their lead early in the fourth. Quinn led a 79-yard, 14-play drive, which Harrison capped with an eight-yard run into the end zone for a 34-24 lead with 12 minutes left. Quinn converted a 4th-and-1 from the KC 21 during the set, running for 13 yards on a quarterback keeper.

Kansas City managed to get down the field in the fourth but settled for a 27- yard field goal from Succop with eight minutes remaining for a seven-point game, 34-27. Cleveland attempted to restore its 10-point margin with 4 1/2 minutes left, but Dawson's 52-yard attempt fell short, giving the Chiefs the ball at their own 42.

    Game Notes

Arrowhead Stadium was not sold out for a Chiefs game for the first time since 1990...The 103-yard return by Cribbs was the second-longest in team history...Cleveland offensive lineman John St. Clair left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury...Only Adrian Peterson (296) and Lewis (295) ran for more yards in a game than Harrison...Cleveland had 417 total yards of offense and 278 return yards...Harrison came into the game with just 301 rushing yards on the season.
