NFL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Kansas City

    (Sunday, November 22nd)

Final Score: Kansas City 27, Pittsburgh 24 (OT)

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Ryan Succop kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime, as the Kansas City Chiefs erased a 10-point halftime deficit to stun the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-24, at Arrowhead Stadium.

The game-winning boot was set up by a 61-yard passing play between Matt Cassel and Chris Chambers on third down.

Cassel finished 15-of-30 through the air for 248 yards and two touchdowns for the Chiefs (3-7), who snapped a 10-game losing streak at home. Jamaal Charles opened the scoring with a kickoff return and his two-yard grab drew Kansas City even with 4:54 to play in fourth quarter.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 32-of-42 passes for 398 yards with three touchdowns, but was picked off twice before exiting the game in the extra session after being struck in the head by the knee of Derrick Johnson.

"(Roethlisberger) took a blow," said Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin. "Needless to say it was a concussion-oriented thing. So I doubt he was going to come back in the football game. I don't have a lot of information in terms of where he is or his level of availability."

Rashard Mendenhall had 80 yards on 21 carries for the Steelers (6-4), who have lost two straight.

A turnover on the initial series of the third quarter curbed the Steelers' momentum.

Pittsburgh built a 17-7 lead in the first half, but tight end Heath Miller had a pass from Roethlisberger deflect off his hands and go to linebacker Andy Studebaker at the Kansas City 38.

Kansas City converted a pair of third downs on the ensuing drive, the latter resulting in a 21-yard touchdown grab by Leonard Pope.

Studebaker picked off Roethlisberger again later in the quarter -- this time in the end zone -- and rumbled down the right sideline before he was caught from behind by Mendenhall at the Pittsburgh eight-yard line.

Cassel, though, was sacked twice and Kansas City tied the game on a 27-yard field goal by Succop with five seconds to go in a frustrating quarter for Roethlisberger.

The Pittsburgh defense came up with a big play on the Chiefs' next possession. With Kansas City facing a 3rd-and-9 from its own 37, Lawrence Timmons wrapped up Cassel and stripped him of the ball. James Harrison scooped it up at the 27, and the Steelers regained the lead on an eight-yard TD reception by Mendenhall -- the first of his career.

Kansas City refused to go away and Cassel led the Chiefs on an eight-play, 91- yard drive. The former New England signal-caller threw a 30-yard completion to Lance Long on third down, then connected with Chambers for 47 yards, moving the ball to the Pittsburgh 13. Charles' touchdown reception tied the game at 24-24.

The Steelers got the ball to begin overtime and Roethlisberger was shaken up near midfield on a play negated by an offensive holding infraction. Charlie Batch took over and completed his first pass to Santonio Holmes for 17 yards.

On 3rd-and-2 from the Kansas City 35, Mewelde Moore was bottled up in the backfield, knocking Pittsburgh out of field goal range.

The Chiefs started at the 20-yard line following the punt and Charles collected 10 yards on first down. Cassel then hit Pope for a five-yard gain before he was nearly picked off by Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor, who failed to hold on to the ball as he fell to the ground.

Chambers then caught a pass over the middle and made his way to the four-yard line before he was pushed out of bounds, setting the stage for Succop's kick.

"(Cassel) gave me a great ball," Chambers said. "I was able to pull it in and move one move and go down the sideline. I should have scored, but at least I got it down to the point where we were able to kick the field goal and win the game."

Kansas City jumped out to an early lead when Charles returned the game's opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

A 36-yard Jeff Reed field goal put the Steelers on the board early in the second quarter, and the visitors seized a 10-7 lead when Roethlisberger capped a 10-play, 95-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward. The key play of the march was a 16-yard completion to Miller on 3rd-and-8 from the Kansas City 22. Two plays later, the towering quarterback scrambled to his left before finding an uncovered Ward in the back of the end zone.

After the Chiefs went three-and-out on their next possession, Roethlisberger guided Pittsburgh on another scoring drive, shaking off Kansas City defensive tackle Ron Edwards and floating a pass to Miller for a 10-yard TD with 70 seconds to go in the first half.

    Game Notes

Pittsburgh set an NFL record by yielding a kickoff, punt return or defensive touchdown in eight straight games...Ward made 10 catches for 128 yards, while Miller caught seven passes for 95 yards...Miller has 54 receptions this season - a new career high...Charles' kickoff return for a score was the first by a Kansas City player since Dante Hall on October 2, 2005 against Philadelphia...Steelers safety Troy Polamalu missed the game because of a left knee injury.
