NFL Game Summary - St. Louis at Washington

    (Sunday, September 20th)

Final Score: Washington 9, St. Louis 7

Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Shaun Suisham kicked three field goals to lead the Washington Redskins past the St. Louis Rams, 9-7, at FedEx Field.

Jason Campbell completed 23-of-35 passes for 242 yards and added 28 yards on seven carries for the Redskins (1-1), who were coming off a Week 1 loss to the division rival Giants. Clinton Portis added 79 yards on 19 rushes and nine yards on two catches. Chris Cooley had 83 yards on seven receptions in the triumph.

"We have to go out this week and practice...a lot of it has to do with attitude," said Campbell. "We have to understand that every time we get the ball you never know which play could be the one to bust open (for a) score."

Marc Bulger was 15-of-28 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (0-2), who also dropped their Week 1 game against the Seahawks. Steven Jackson tallied 104 yards on 17 carries and added 15 yards on four catches. Laurent Robinson had 54 yards on six grabs and had the lone TD in defeat.

St. Louis has dropped 12 in a row since a 34-14 thumping of Dallas on October 19, 2008.

Trailing 9-7 early in the fourth, the Rams started right around midfield but went three-and-out. The Redskins took over at their own 20, later in the drive Ladell Betts' 25-yard catch-and-run moved the ball to the St. Louis 40. Eventually the home team faced a 4th-and-1 from the 20, and Portis broke an 11-yard dash to move the chains.

At the two-minute warning, Washington was faced with a 4th-and-1 from the two- yard line. Despite the fact that a field goal would have made it a five-point game, the team decided to go for it and Portis was stopped for a loss of two.

The Rams responded with three straight incompletions, and on fourth down a long bomb to Donnie Avery was incomplete and all Washington had to do was run out the clock.

After neither team mounted any offense on their respective first possessions, Suisham nailed a 21-yard field goal with about five minutes left in the opening frame. The drive lasted 13 plays and covered 83 yards before it stalled at the three-yard line.

Washington stopped St. Louis on the following drive, and embarked upon a 13- play, 64-yard drive that stalled around the 10-yard line but culminated with a 28-yard boot from Suisham, which made it 6-0.

The Rams then began at their own 16, and on second down Jackson broke a 62- yard dash. However, Avery was called for an illegal block and the ball was moved to the 'Skins 36. Eight plays later, Bulger hit Robinson on a two-yard fade route to the left side of the end zone to give the visitors a 7-6 edge with about four minutes left in the half.

"We were moving the ball well, we just had a couple of hitches in the offense," said Robinson. "We're going to get it patched out and keep it going for next week."

The Redskins stopped the Rams on the opening drive of the second half, before starting at their own 21. The team drove all the way down, but again had to settle for a field goal as the trek stopped at the five.

St. Louis then embarked on a drive that bridged the final two quarters. Starting at their own 25, the Rams drove all the way down to the Red Zone. However, as the club was inside the 10 Bulger hit Avery for a short pass before Chris Horton hit him and caused a fumble. Carlos Rogers scooped up the ball and Washington took over at its own six. The 'Skins went three-and-out and the Rams got the ball back.

"It was a good pass by Marc Bulger, the DB made a great play for the ball," said Avery. "I know better than that, I should have had it high and tight. It's all on me, I lost it for the team."

    Game Notes

Bulger became the Rams' all-time leader in completions, he has 1,861...The St. Louis defense allowed nine points, the fewest allowed since giving up nine in a victory over the 49ers on November 18, 2007...Jackson's 62-yard run in the second quarter was the longest of his career...Washington had four drives of more than 60 yards that faltered inside the 10-yard line...The Redskins lead the all-time series, 21-8-1...Redskins right guard Randy Thomas suffered a right triceps injury and left in the first half...Bulger fell to 2-1 against Washington.
