NBA Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, January 5th (All times Eastern)

New York Knicks (10-22) at Dallas Mavericks (19-14), 7:30 p.m.

(SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Knicks could've easily been looking for a Texas sweep on Sunday when they visit the Dallas Mavericks, but instead, they'll try and find their way back into the win column.

On Friday, just a day removed from a great victory over the San Antonio Spurs, the Knicks lost, 102-100 to the Houston Rockets.

Houston's Aaron Brooks made two free throws with 17 seconds left, then the Knicks couldn't tie.

Iman Shumpert was 6-for-6 on 3-pointers after going 6-for-8 in a win over San Antonio on Thursday. He scored 26 and Carmelo Anthony, who called for the ball on the Knicks' last play but didn't get it, had 25 points.

Shumpert made a 3 and Tyson Chandler made two free throws to pull the Knicks out of a late five-point hole and tie the game with 1:02 remaining.

With under a minute to go and the game tied, Beno Udrih missed a 3-point try and Chandler grabbed the offensive rebound, kicking it back out to J.R. Smith, who took the ill-advised shot with the clock turned off.

"Honestly, I thought we were down two. I shot the ball, and I started hearing Tyson saying, 'No, no, don't take the shot' but by then it was already released. ... That was just bad basketball IQ on me," Smith said.

Chandler finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Udrih had 10.

The Knicks have lost four of five and head home after Sunday for three of their next four.

The Mavs saw their three-game winning streak halted Friday with a 119-112 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Dirk Nowitzki finished with 24 points, while Shawn Marion added 20 in Dallas' third straight home loss. Marion eclipsed the 17,000 career point mark and joined Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone and Kevin Garnett as the only players in NBA history with at least 17,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 1,500 steals and 1,000 blocks

"(The loss) is on every one of us, coaches and players, and it's very disappointing because it was an opportunity lost," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said.

Monta Ellis (13), Brandon Wright (12) and Jose Calderon (11) also scored in double digits for the Mavs.

Dallas shot 51 percent from the floor against LA and 43 percent from long range, but lost the rebounding battle, 46-39.

The Mavericks have won 12 of their last 15 against the Knicks, including 12 of 13 in Dallas.
