National League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, July 31st (All times Eastern)

    Colorado Rockies (51-57) at Atlanta Braves (62-45), 7:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Tyler Chatwood (7-3, 2.48) Atlanta - Mike Minor (10-5, 2.89)

(Sports Network) - Tyler Chatwood has come a long way since he faced the Atlanta Braves back in late April.

Chatwood hopes to avenge a rough outing against the NL East leaders on Wednesday night as the Colorado Rockies play the third contest of a four-game series in Turner Field.

In his season debut with the Rockies on April 24, Chatwood was roughed up for five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and three walks over six innings of a no-decision versus the Braves. He had split his previous two starts versus Atlanta and owns a lifetime earned run average of 5.63 in the three meetings.

That outing, though, is just one of two times this year that the right-hander has allowed more than two runs in a start. The other instance came on July 3 when he allowed five earned runs over five frames in a setback to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Chatwood is 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA in four starts since and an excellent 7-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 14 outings overall this year. The 23-year-old won his second straight start on Friday, striking out a career-high 11 batters without a walk to beat Milwaukee. He also yielded just a pair of runs over his seven innings.

"His curveball was really sharp," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "His fastball was explosive and down. He has the slider he has a lot of confidence in now. He was really good."

Braves starter Mike Minor has been really good as well over his past four outings, going 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA, and gets the call tonight.

The 25-year-old Minor is coming off a victory over St. Louis on Friday as the only run he allowed over his seven innings came on a solo homer. Minor gave up four hits in all and struck out five without a walk.

"Minor was on his game tonight. He's hard to hit when he is," said Braves left fielder Evan Gattis.

The lefty is 10-5 with a 2.89 ERA over 21 starts this season, one victory shy of the career-high 11 he won over 30 starts last year.

Minor won at Colorado on April 23, allowing three runs over six innings, and is 2-0 in his career in this matchup with a 5.50 ERA.

The Braves have taken the first two contests of this series and routed the Rockies 11-3 on Tuesday night.

Freddie Freeman notched his fourth career multi-homer game and drove in four runs, while Brian McCann added a three-run shot to cap a six-run fourth inning. Jason Heyward added three hits and scored three times in Atlanta's fifth straight win.

Alex Wood earned his first Major League win after he gave up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.

Atlanta leads the NL East by 10 games, while Colorado has fallen 7 1/2 games off the pace in the NL West after Juan Nicasio was roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over four innings in last night's loss.

"They didn't miss any mistakes," Weiss said. "It's all about where you throw it. I think some balls were in the middle of the plate. I think he got some sliders up. That's what happens when a club like that is swinging the bats well."

Nolan Arenado hit a home run for the Rockies, who dropped their second straight game and lost for the sixth time in their last nine.

Atlanta has won 16 of the last 20 meetings with Colorado and 10 of the past 11 at home.
