National League Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, July 5 (All times Eastern)

    Milwaukee Brewers (51-36) at Cincinnati Reds (44-41), 4:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Milwaukee - Matt Garza (5-5, 4.10) Cincinnati - Homer Bailey (8-4, 4.39)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Homer Bailey aims for his sixth victory in his last nine starts when he leads the Cincinnati Reds against the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Bailey, who needs one strikeout to reach 800 for his career, is coming off a three-hit shutout at San Francisco Sunday. That marked his sixth career complete game and fourth shutout. The right-hander didn't allow a hit until Buster Posey singled with two outs in the seventh innings.

Bailey is 5-1 in his last eight starts overall. He's also 4-7 with a 5.24 ERA in 18 games versus Milwaukee.

The last time Bailey faced off against the Brewers, Matt Garza was on the other side pitching for Milwaukee. Garza takes the mound this afternoon.

On June 13 at Miller Park, Bailey lasted 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision, a 6-5 Reds victory on Billy Hamilton's go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. Garza lasted seven frames in that contest.

Garza has just one loss (3-1) over his last eight starts. He lasted 6 2/3 innings a week ago in a win at home against Colorado. Garza is 1-3 with a 5.45 ERA in seven career starts against the Reds.

Last night, Hamilton's two-run homer helped the Reds to a 4-2 victory in the opener of the three-game set. Skip Schumaker finished with three hits and an RBI and Joey Votto supplied a run-scoring double for the Reds, who snapped a three-game skid.

Reds starter Alfredo Simon (11-3) won his fifth straight decision after tossing a solid 7 1/3 innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. His 11 wins are tied for most in the National League with Zack Greinke of the Dodgers and Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals.

Jonathan Lucroy homered and Jean Segura also drove in a run for the Brewers, who dropped their fourth straight game. Kyle Lohse (9-3) was reached for four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits with eight strikeouts over five innings.

Aroldis Chapman tossed a scoreless ninth for his 17th save of the season. Chapman has recorded a strikeout in 36 straight appearances. It is the longest active streak by a reliever and is second in major league history since 1900, trailing Bruce Sutter, who reached 39 games in 1977 with the Cubs.

The Reds lead the season series, 6-2.
