American League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, May 7th (All times Eastern)

New York Yankees (17-15) at LA Angels of Anaheim (16-16), 10:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Vidal Nuno (0-0, 6.87) LA Angels - Hector Santiago (0-5, 5.01)

(SportsNetwork.com) - The LA Angels of Anaheim face a tough task in capturing a series win over the New York Yankees Wednesday with Hector Santiago scheduled to pitch at the Big A.

The Angels won the series opener on Monday by a 4-1 score, but fell back into the loss column with Tuesday's 4-3 setback.

Now it's up to Santiago to keep Anaheim's current trend of results going. The Angels have rotated wins and losses in each of the past six games and are winless in Santiago's six starts this season. Santiago is in his first season with the Halos and has an 0-5 record with a 5.01 earned run average.

Santiago has dropped his last three starts and allowed a season-high five runs and seven hits in six innings of a 5-2 loss to Texas on Friday. He struck out five batters and walked two.

The left-hander, who is 0-3 in three home outings, lost to the Yankees in the Bronx on April 26, when he was reached for four runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings, which matched a season low. Santiago has a 1-1 record and a 7.71 ERA in four career games (2 starts) against the Yankees.

In Tuesday's meeting, Anaheim closer Ernesto Frieri gave up a solo home run to Brian Roberts in the top of the ninth and the Angels were retired in order in the home half.

"I attacked the strike zone," said Frieri. "The pitch was low but he put a good swing on it."

Erick Aybar, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each had an RBI, and starter C.J. Wilson allowed three runs and seven hits in eight innings for the no-decision.

The Angels will start a six-game road trip later this week against Toronto and Philadelphia.

Pujols extended his hitting streak to seven games.

New York had lost two straight and five of six games, and Roberts finished 2- for-4 with two RBI and the clutch home run. Yangervis Solarte had two hits and an RBI for the Yankees.

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda struck out eight batters in 7 2/3 innings without issuing a walk in his best outing in his last four starts. He gave up five hits and three runs -- one earned.

"It was encouraging tonight watching Hiroki pitch," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "His sinker and slider were working (and) it was nice to get some big hits."

Shawn Kelley got the final out of the eighth inning for the win and David Robertson tossed a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Taking the mound for the Yanks Wednesday is Vidal Nuno. Nuno has no record in six games (3 starts) with a 6.87 earned run average. He has given up seven runs in each of his last two appearances and allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings of a 10-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday.

Nuno, a left-hander, faced the Angels for the first time in his career on April 26 in a 4-3 win at Yankee Stadium. He was touched for three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

After this series at Angel Stadium, the Yankees will visit the Milwaukee Brewers for three games at Miller Park. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will play his final regular-season game in Anaheim.

New York took two of three games versus the Angels in the Bronx from April 25-27 after going 4-3 in the 2013 series. The Yankees are 7-3 in the past 10 meetings with the Halos.

The Angels have won seven of the last 11 meetings with New York at home.
