American League Preview from The Sports Network

Monday, April 14th (All times Eastern)

Tampa Bay Rays (7-6) at Baltimore Orioles (5-7), 7:05 p.m.

    Probable Starting Pitchers: Tampa Bay - Chris Archer (1-0, 1.38) Baltimore - Wei-Yin Chen (1-1, 6.75)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Right-hander Chris Archer heads to the mound as one of the increasingly few options in the Tampa Bay starting rotation on Monday night, when the Rays open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Archer has tossed a combined 13 innings in his last two starts, beating Toronto with six innings of work in a 7-2 win on April 3 and then going seven while getting a no-decision in Tampa Bay's 1-0 defeat of Kansas City on Tuesday.

He won one decision and had a 3.97 earned run average in two starts against the Orioles last season.

Tampa Bay lost Matt Moore to a left elbow problem last week, then sent Alex Cobb to the disabled list to join him after Cobb strained his left oblique muscle in the Rays' win Saturday in Cincinnati.

Long reliever Cesar Ramos started in Moore's place on Sunday against the Reds, and veteran Erik Bedard is expected to fill Cobb's slot.

Lefty Wei-Yin Chen gets the ball for the Orioles after allowing 12 and nine hits in his last two starts.

He's not lasted beyond the sixth inning in either a 4-3 loss to Boston or a 14-5 defeat of the New York Yankees.

Chen gave up just two runs in each of three starts against Tampa Bay last season.

Ben Zobrist of the Rays has 10 hits in 23 career at-bats against him.

On Sunday in Baltimore, Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer, while Colby Rasmus added a solo shot and also knocked in three to fuel Toronto's 11-3 victory over the Orioles in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Chris Davis and Matt Wieters hit solo homers, while Adam Jones drove in the other run for the Orioles, who had won three of four prior to this weekend.

Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3) was tagged for 10 hits and five runs over his 5 1/3- inning outing.

In Cincinnati, Chris Heisey hit a grand slam and Devin Mesoraco went 2-for-3 with a three- run homer and four RBI to lead the Reds to a 12-4 win over the Rays and avoid a three-game sweep at Great American Ball Park.

Zobrist finished with a pair of two-run homers for the Rays, who had won three of four entering the contest.

Ramos (0-1) allowed four runs on three hits over two-plus innings to get the loss in his first start of the year.

Tampa Bay won 11 of its final 13 games against Baltimore in 2013.
