National League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, April 6th (All times Eastern)

San Diego Padres (1-4) at Miami Marlins (5-1), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Ian Kennedy (0-1, 5.40) Miami - Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 3.00)

(Sports Network) - Former first-round draft pick Ian Kennedy makes his fifth career start against the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon when the San Diego Padres visit them to close out a three-game series at Marlins Park.

The Padres will be trying to salvage a positive from a series in which they've lost the first two games. Miami made in two in a row on Saturday, when Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs and Jose Fernandez fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the surging Marlins took care of the Padres, 5-0.

Kennedy was an opening-round pick of the New York Yankees in 2006 and ultimately blossomed in Arizona, where he won 21 and 15 games in 2011 and 2012, respectively. He split last season between the Diamondbacks and Padres and was 3-9 in 22 overall starts.

He lost his opening start of 2014 on Tuesday when he allowed a two-run, first- inning homer to Yasiel Puig then gave up just one run over the next four innings of a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kennedy is 2-1 with a 4.01 earned run average in four starts against the Marlins, whom he's not met since 2012.

Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi gets the start for Miami and aims for a second straight win to begin the season. He allowed two runs and struck out six over six innings of a 4-3 win over Colorado on Tuesday.

Eovaldi is 1-0 in two lifetime meetings with the Padres and has given up just one run against them in 11 1/3 innings.

    In 26 career lifetime outings on the road - including 25 starts - he's 6-9 with a 3.95 ERA.

On Saturday, Fernandez (2-0) dazzled in his second start of the season, allowing just five baserunners while striking out eight. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year has allowed just a run with 17 strikeouts through 12 2/3 innings this season.

Stanton was one of four Marlins with two hits, with Derek Dietrich and Christian Yelich both posting two hits and an RBI.

Andrew Cashner (0-1) went six innings for the Padres, scattering five hits and three walks while surrendering two runs.

San Diego was 4-3 against the Marlins last season.
