American League Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, April 1st (All times Eastern)

Seattle Mariners (1-0) at LA Angels of Anaheim (0-1), 10:05 p.m.

    Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Erasmo Ramirez (0-0, 0.00) LA Angels - C.J. Wilson (0-0, 0.00)

(SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Wilson will try to help the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim avoid losing two straight games to start a season for the first time since 2001 on Tuesday when they continue a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Angel Stadium.

Wilson was the Angels' best pitcher a year ago, as he went 17-7 with a 3.39 ERA, while also leading the team in strikeouts (188) and innings (212 1/3).

The left-hander also compiled a 2.55 ERA in 14 home outings.

"I felt like I had a good season, but I'm trying to be better than I was last year; trying to pick up where I left off," Wilson said.

Over 11 starts versus the Mariners Wilson is 8-2 with a 2.14 ERA.

The Angels could certainly use a big effort from him on Tuesday after being routed in Monday's opener, as Justin Smoak smacked a three-run homer among his two hits and scored three times to help Seattle to a 10-3 win.

Robinson Cano, who hit .429 with 13 RBI in 17 games during spring training, went 2- for-4 with a run scored in his Mariners debut.

Felix Hernandez (1-0) struck out 11 and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk over six innings for Seattle.

"I felt my pitches were way better after the first couple of innings," Hernandez said.

Mike Trout homered in defeat, while Jered Weaver (0-1) fanned six and surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and three walks to garner the loss.

To make matters worse for the Angels, hitting coach Don Baylor broke his right leg while catching Vladimir Guerrero's ceremonial first pitch. The former Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs manager will have surgery on his femur Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Don," Halos manager Mike Scioscia said. "I've never seen anything like that."

Seattle, meanwhile, will turn to righty Erasmo Ramirez, as All-Star Hisashi Iwakuma recovers from a torn ligament in his right middle finger. Ramirez was 5-3 with a 4.98 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) in 2013.

"Whether it's the first, the 10th or the 20th game, I always feel like today is the day. I just have to do all I can," said Ramirez. "I'll give 100 percent, 200 percent, and just go as deep as I can into the game."

Ramirez, who is 0-2 lifetime versus the Angels, despite a 2.41 ERA in three starts, was terrific this spring, going 3-0 with a 1.14 ERA over 23 2/3 innings.

The Angels were 11-8 against the Mariners last season.
