American League Preview from The Sports Network

Friday, August 2nd (All times Eastern)

    Houston Astros (36-71) at Minnesota Twins (45-60), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Jarred Cosart (1-0, 0.86) Minnesota - Samuel Deduno (7-4, 3.18)

(Sports Network) - Right-handed phenom Jarred Cosart makes his fourth major- league start on Friday night when the Houston Astros visit Target Field to open a three-game weekend series with the Minnesota Twins.

A 23-year-old Texan, Cosart was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 38th round in 2008 before heading to Houston in the 2011 trade that sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies.

He made 21 appearances at Double-A and Triple-A in the Astros organization in 2012, then opened this year with seven wins in 11 decisions across 18 games before heading to the big leagues.

He debuted with eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball on July 12 at Tampa Bay and emerged with a 2-1 victory over the host Rays.

Cosart has been equally strong, if not successful, in two subsequent starts while allowing two runs on 11 hits in 13 innings of games against Oakland and Toronto - in which Houston is 1-1.

For the Twins, streaking Dominican right-hander Samuel Deduno aims for a fourth straight win in his first career meeting with the Astros.

He was 4-4 on the season with a 3.90 earned run average after a 7-4 loss at Tampa Bay on July 6, but has since beaten the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Seattle in three starts.

In that stretch, Deduno has allowed three runs on 13 hits in 21 innings, pitching exactly seven innings in each start and walking 11 batters while striking out 14.

Deduno hasn't pitched at home since July 2 and is 3-1 in four starts this season at Target Field.

On Thursday in Baltimore, newly acquired starter Bud Norris pitched six innings and his new team, the Orioles, managed to win the rubber match against the Astros, 6-3.

Brett Wallace and Marc Krauss each hit a solo shot for the Astros, who saw starter Jordan Lyles (4-5) surrender five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.

In Minnesota, Billy Butler tallied two hits, two RBI and a run scored as Kansas City won its season-high ninth straight game, a 7-2 triumph over the Twins to complete a three-game sweep.

Scott Diamond (5-10) surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits and three walks over five innings for Minnesota, which dropped its fourth consecutive contest.

The Astros won two of three games the last time the teams played in Minnesota in 2009.
