National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Chicago

    (Sunday, April 6th)

Final Score: Chicago 8, Philadelphia 3

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Kalish led the way with three RBI as the Chicago Cubs cruised to an 8-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, avoiding a sweep of the three-game set.

Kalish went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double and Anthony Rizzo was 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Cubs, who host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series.

"Today, we happened to have some balls find holes, and we took advantage of it." Cubs manager Rick Renteria said.

Carlos Villanueva (1-2) surrendered one run on six hits through five frames of work, fanning three and not allowing a walk.

Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Chase Utley had the Phillies' lone extra-base hit while picking up an RBI. Ben Revere scored a pair of runs in the loss.

A.J. Burnett (0-1) was knocked around for eight runs -- four earned -- over 5 2/3 innings, issuing six walks and striking out three.

"I was pitching behind. I missed first pitches. The key today was throwing strikes. That was embarrassing," Burnett said.

After scoring three runs or less in each of their first five games, the Cubs bested that total in the first inning with four. Kalish tripled off the right field wall to plate Emilio Bonifacio, who led off with a walk. Rizzo then walked before Nate Schierholtz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Kalish and move Rizzo to second.

Luis Valbuena followed with a four-pitch walk before Starlin Castro clubbed a double to left center, which scored Rizzo. Then, Ryan Sweeney picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Valbuena.

Philadelphia got on the board in the fifth with the help of back-to-back singles by Revere and Rollins. Revere stole second with Rollins at the dish and moved to third on Rollins' single. Rollins then stole second before Utley plated Revere on a fielder's choice up the middle.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg used his first challenge of the season on the play at first. Sandberg disputed that Utley beat the throw but the call was upheld and Utley remained out.

Sweeney kept the Cubs rolling in the sixth when he ripped a line drive to center. Revere couldn't reel it in and allowed Sweeney to advance to third on the error. John Baker was then hit by a pitch before Bonifacio singled home Sweeney. Kalish then drove home Baker and Bonifacio before Rizzo knocked him in to round out the scoring for Chicago.

In the ninth, Cody Asche, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Revere picked up consecutive walks, which Rollins followed with a dribbler back to the mound. Asche scored on the play and Revere scored the Phillies' final run on a wild pitch by Pedro Strop.

    Game Notes

Cubs reliever Hector Rondon has a 13-inning scoreless streak dating to Sept. 3 last season (12 appearances). He threw two scoreless frames, striking out two ... The Phillies home opener on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers has been postponed to Tuesday, which was a built in off day in case of weather ... Chicago went 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position, compared to Philadelphia going 1-for-15 with RISP.
