National League Game Summary - Colorado at Arizona

    (Saturday, July 6th)

Final Score: Arizona 11, Colorado 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Wade Miley shined both on the mound and at the plate to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 11-1 rout of the Colorado Rockies in the middle test of a three-game series from Chase Field.

The left-hander limited Colorado to one run on five hits and struck out five over a season-high eight innings to snap a five-start winless streak, while helping his cause by stroking a three-run double in the second inning. Miley (5-7) had gone 0-2 with three no-decisions since besting St. Louis on June 5.

Arizona also belted three home runs en route to a fourth straight victory following a season-long five-game skid. Miguel Montero delivered a three-run blast, while Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado each had two-run shots for the NL West leaders.

Cody Ross provided further support by going 5-for-5 with three runs scored.

"Obviously it feels good to get some consecutive hits in a row, even feels better with a win," said Ross. "That's the main thing."

Colorado was dealt its fifth loss in six games and struggled offensively against a southpaw for a second straight night, with Tyler Skaggs firing eight shutout frames in the Diamondbacks' 5-0 triumph in Friday's opener.

Carlos Gonzalez, voted into the NL's starting outfield for the upcoming All- Star Game, had four of the Rockies' six hits and supplied the team's lone run with a solo homer.

Drew Pomeranz (0-2) lasted just four innings for Colorado, permitting five runs while issuing five walks along with five hits.

Much like Skaggs the previous night, Miley continually kept Colorado's hitters in check all throughout his stint. He also came up big in his first at-bat as Arizona jumped all over Pomeranz in the bottom of the second inning.

Ross began the outburst with a ground-rule double and Pomeranz walked both Gerardo Parra and Didi Gregorius in succession to load the bases with two out. The move backfired, as Miley laced a double into the left-field corner to plate all three men aboard and stake the Diamondbacks to a 3-0 lead.

That was enough for Miley, who yielded just three singles and a walk through the first six innings and set down eight consecutive hitters until Gonzalez opened the seventh with his 24th homer of the season.

"He was able to get movement on his fastball and we made some good plays," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson. "Really efficient with his pitches, his pitch count, and [it was] what we needed to get that bullpen rested as well."

Gonzalez's shot cut Colorado's deficit to 6-1, as Goldschmidt -- fresh off being named an All-Star reserve -- followed a walk to Aaron Hill with a long drive into the left-field seats in the third and Arizona tacked on another run against Manny Corpas in the bottom of the fifth. Ross led off with a single, moved up a base on a balk, and crossed the plate on Parra's double two batters later.

"I need to put my team in a better spot to win the game," said Pomeranz. "You can't do that, being down 5-0 after three innings."

Ross collected his fourth hit of the evening in Arizona's half of the seventh, right before Prado deposited the first pitch he saw from Corpas into the stands to give the Diamondbacks a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Montero capped the scoring an inning later with a towering homer off Wilton Lopez, who had given up a double to A.J. Pollock and a walk to Goldschmidt in front of the blast.

    Game Notes

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer, who doubled in the seventh inning to extend his road hitting streak to 15 games, and injured shortstop Troy Tulowitzki were Colorado's other two All-Star selections, with Sunday starter Patrick Corbin joining Goldschmidt as the D-backs' representatives ... Ross produced his first career five-hit game ... Miley improved to 5-0 with a 2.52 ERA in eight career outings (seven starts) against Colorado ... The Rockies have lost four straight and nine of their last 11 on the road.
