National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at San Diego

    (Thursday, April 19th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, San Diego 0

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Vance Worley struck out a career-high 11 batters while scattering just four hits over seven strong innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies shut out the San Diego Padres, 2-0, in the opener of a four-game set.

Worley (1-1) walked three and Juan Pierre and Hunter Pence scored for the Phillies, who snapped a two-game skid with their 12th consecutive win over the Padres at Petco Park.

"I definitely want to strike guys out and today they were just swinging and missing," said Worley.

Jonathan Papelbon got around a leadoff walk in the ninth with a double play and a strikeout to record his fourth save of the season.

San Diego rookie Joe Wieland (0-2) suffered the loss despite giving up just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over six frames. The Padres had just four hits in their seventh loss in eight tries.

"This guy has less than two weeks in the major leagues at 22 years old and he's showing some good signs at a really, really infant stage," Padres manager Bud Black said about Wieland.

Pierre led off the game with a walk, moved to third on a single by Placido Polanco and an error by Will Venable, and scored on Jimmy Rollins' sacrifice fly.

The Phillies then loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Pence and Shane Victorino, but Wieland got John Mayberry to pop out in the infield and Carlos Ruiz to ground out to end the threat.

The Padres stranded Jeremy Hermida after a leadoff triple in the second inning, and squandered opportunities in the sixth and seventh.

Venable was bunted to second after a hit and could have scored on Chase Headley's single, but misread the play and only got to third. Hermida then struck out, and Headley faked an attempt to steal second. Ruiz fired to Rollins at second, at which point Venable tried to steal home. But Rollins noticed the trick play and tossed back to Ruiz, who held on to the ball after a collision with Venable for the final out.

Worley's 11th strikeout ended the seventh with runners on first and third.

Pence doubled the Phillies' lead in the ninth on a passed ball by Ernesto Frieri after walking and moving to third on Victorino's base hit.

    Game Notes

With Ruiz behind the plate, this was the first time since July 15, 2011 (14 starts) that Brian Schneider did not catch Worley...Pierre hit a triple, his first extra-base hit of the season...San Diego was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base...Friday's matchup features Cole Hamels (1-1) for Philadelphia against San Diego's Edinson Volquez (0-1).
