MLB Game Summary - Oakland at San Francisco

    (Thursday, July 10)

Final Score: Oakland 6, San Francisco 1

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Kazmir justified his All-Star selection by firing seven scoreless innings, while Stephen Vogt knocked in three runs at the plate in the Oakland Athletics' 6-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Josh Donaldson added a two-run homer as part of a 2-for-3 day that helped the Athletics close out the home-and-home Bay Bridge Series with wins in three of the four matchups. Vogt, Brandon Moss and John Jaso also finished with a pair of hits.

Kazmir (11-3) only allowed three hits and a walk while racking up nine strikeouts in an outstanding final appearance before Tuesday's Midsummer Classic in Minneapolis.

"From pitch one I felt comfortable," Kazmir stated. "I was able to get some quick outs and use all my pitches."

Tim Hudson (7-6) wasn't nearly as effective for San Francisco, with the onetime Oakland standout rocked for six runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings to drop a fourth consecutive decision.

"He was a little off today," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "Today he wasn't quite as sharp and didn't have quite the same action on his sinker and changeup."

Kazmir didn't permit a hit until Mike Morse singled to open the bottom of the fifth inning. The left-hander was working with a 2-0 lead at the time after the A's put up single runs in both the second and top of the fifth.

A single by Moss and a walk to Donaldson led to Oakland's initial run, with both runners advancing on a groundout and Alberto Callaspo sending Moss home with a fly ball to center.

Hudson cruised through the next two frames and got the first two A's out in the fifth, but then served Jaso's triple into the gap in right center that preceded Vogt's first RBI hit of the afternoon.

Oakland broke the game open an inning later, with Donaldson following a Moss double with an opposite-field homer to stake the A's to a 4-0 advantage. They tacked on two more runs in the sixth courtesy of Vogt, who reached reliever Javier Lopez for a single after Oakland loaded the bases to chase Hudson with one out.

San Francisco finally threatened Kazmir in the fifth, putting two in scoring position on Morse's single and Gregor Blanco's two-out double in front of Hudson's inning-ending flyout. Kazmir stranded two more in the sixth, fanning Morse for the final out of the frame to maintain Oakland's 6-0 margin.

"A couple innings he kind of battled out of some trouble," said Donaldson. "But for the most part, he just did what he normally does, and that's get outs and put up zeros."

The Giants foiled Oakland's shutout bid on three eighth-inning singles off Dan Otero, with Pablo Sandoval recording the last to bring home Ehire Adrianza.

    Game Notes

Home plate umpire Adrian Johnson left the game after three innings of play, having taken a foul ball from Sandoval off his mask earlier in the contest. Angel Hernandez moved over from second base to call balls and strikes the rest of the way ... Hudson, who went 92-39 over six seasons with Oakland from 1999-2004, faced his former club for only the second time. He took a loss to the A's while with Atlanta in 2008 ... Kazmir improved to 5-0 with an MLB-best 0.93 ERA in seven day starts ... The A's had lost in 12 of their last 15 visits to AT&T Park coming in.
