MLB Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Atlanta

    (Saturday, June 14)

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 11, Atlanta 6 (13 innings)

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun's go-ahead single sparked a five-run 13th inning as the LA Angels of Anaheim topped the Atlanta Braves, 11-6, in the middle installment of a three-game set on Saturday.

With the game tied at six apiece in the 13th inning, Erick Aybar singled, C.J. Wilson walked and Chris Iannetta was hit by a pitch to load the bases off David Hale (2-1). After John McDonald popped up, B.J. Upton dove and missed Calhoun's liner in center which drove in Aybar.

Trout's two-run double down the left-field line ended Hale's outing and Albert Pujols greeted Shae Simmons with a two-run single to account for the final score.

"We never quit, they never quit," said Trout. "You've got to give them props. They scored four runs and put pressure on us. We kept battling, put ourselves in a good position and we won the game."

Trout and Pujols both had three hits, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored for the Angels, who have won six of their last eight. Aybar went 4-for-6 and scored twice.

Fernando Salas (4-0) allowed just one hit during the 11th and 12th innings to earn the win. Starter Garrett Richards tossed six innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out a career- high 10 batters.

Jason Heyward and B.J. Upton both drove in two runs apiece and Evan Gattis homered among his three hits for Atlanta, which has lost three of its last four.

"We had our chances to get the win," said Braves catcher Gerald Laird. "It was an excellent effort coming back in the ninth inning. We battled tonight."

The Braves scored four in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Andrelton Simmons and pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit both singled off Ernesto Frieri to open the frame. Heyward's single scored Simmons from second. Upton's triple to center got the Braves within one before Freddie Freeman's ground-rule double to center tied the game.

Pujols led off the top of the 10th with a double off Craig Kimbrel and came home on Josh Hamilton's single to left.

Cam Bedrosian started the 10th for the Angels and was greeted by a base hit up the middle from Tommy La Stella. La Stella moved to second on a balk. Simmons grounded out and pinch-hitter Ramiro Pena reached on an infield single before Heyward's bloop single into left tied the game at six.

Two batters later, Freeman was intentionally walked to load the bases. Justin Upton's fly ball to right was caught by a diving Calhoun to keep the game tied.

The Angels opened the scoring in the fourth. Calhoun singled, moved up to second on a wild pitch, took third on Trout's single to left and raced home on Pujols' sacrifice fly to right.

Trout crushed his 13th homer of the year into the left-field seats and on the very next pitch, Pujols sent a blast of his own to left to give the Angels a 3-0 advantage in the sixth.

The Angels tacked on a run in both the seventh and eight innings. Aybar and David Freese both singled off Gavin Floyd and Luis Avilan gave up a two-out walk to Calhoun to load the bases. Trout worked a bases-loaded walk off Anthony Varvaro to make it a 4-0 game.

In the eighth, Kendrick singled and ran to third after B.J. Upton misplayed the ball in center. Aybar brought him home with an RBI single, but was thrown out at second on the play.

Gattis got the Braves on the board in the eight after connecting on a first- pitch sinker to center for his 15th blast of the season.

    Game Notes

Trout extended his hitting streak to nine games and 16 straight interleague contests ... Gattis has hit in 14 straight games ... Angels manager Mike Scioscia was not with the team after attending the funeral of his former Dodger teammate and 1990 Cy Young winner Bob Welch. Bench coach Dino Ebel took his place ... The Angels now lead the all-time series 6-5 ... This game took four hours and 55 minutes to end. It was the longest contest of the season for both teams ... Justin Upton finished 0-for-7 ... The Braves are now 1-7 in interleague play this season.
