Final Score: Texas 12, Detroit 4
Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Mitch Moreland went 3-for-5 with three RBI to help guide the Texas Rangers to a 12-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the series finale of a four-game set at Comerica Park on Sunday.
Adrian Beltre also collected three hits and drove in two, Alex Rios added a pair of hits and three RBI, Michael Choice chipped in with a solo home run, while Shin-Soo Choo and Elvis Andrus each scored three times for the Rangers, who have won five of their last seven contests.
"To come into here and play a good team and play really well and put a lot of runs on the board, throw the ball like we did, I thought it was a big step forward for us," Moreland said.
Colby Lewis (4-3) spun 5 2/3 effective innings, yielding just two runs on five hits and five walks.
Justin Verlander (5-4), who was coming off his worst start of the season, had another dismal outing. He surrendered a season-high nine runs -- six earned -- on 11 hits with three walks over 5 1/3 innings to absorb the loss.
"Obviously it wasn't a good day, but turn the page," Verlander said.
Victor Martinez and Andrew Romine each recorded an RBI for Detroit, which has lost six of its last seven.
The Rangers took a 3-2 advantage going into the fifth before putting up five runs in the inning.
Choo walked and Andrus reached on a fielding error by shortstop Romine to put runners on the corners with no outs. Moreland and Beltre had back-to-back RBI singles and Rios drove in two with a triple to left-center field. Robinson Chirinos singled on a sharp liner to second with two outs to make it 8-2.
Texas added another run in the sixth when Moreland doubled in Andrus.
Three consecutive two-out, RBI singles in the seventh from Andrus, Moreland and Beltre increased Texas' cushion to 12-2.
Torii Hunter plated Ian Kinsler with a line drive to right field and Austin Jackson's RBI-force out at second made it 12-4 Rangers in the seventh.
Rios beat out a two-out slow roller to third to put the Rangers on the board in the first. Choo shattered his bat and lifted a single off Kinsler's glove to lead off. Moreland drew a one-out walk and Choo advanced to third on a Beltre fly out.
The Tigers evened the score in the home half of the inning with an RBI groundout from Martinez. Rajai Davis started the frame with a single, stole second, then advanced to third on a balk.
Choice smashed the first pitch of the second inning over the left-field fence to put the Rangers back up 2-1. Chirinos followed with a double and scored on Verlander's throwing error to first on a sac bunt.
With one out and runners on the corners in the second, Romine's liner to center scored Jackson, who singled to reach base.
