National League Game Summary - New York at San Diego

    (Friday, August 3rd)

Final Score: San Diego 3, New York 1

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Yonder Alonso tallied San Diego's first hit off R.A. Dickey in the fifth and then provided the key one off him in the seventh to put the Padres over the top.

Alonso had two of San Diego's four hits against the knuckleballer Dickey, including the go-ahead double in the seventh, as the Padres rallied past the New York Mets, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game set.

Clayton Richard (8-11) surrendered a run on eight hits and two walks for the Padres, who had dropped five of their previous six coming in.

Huston Street recorded the final four outs to notch his 18th save of the year.

Dickey (14-3) fanned nine, but allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and three walks in seven innings for the Mets, who had won four of five heading in.

"I thought he pitched a great game," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his outing. "We asked him to go a little bit farther than we usually do, but they weren't exactly hitting the ball hard."

The contest was tied 1-1 going into the seventh before the Padres surged ahead.

Carlos Quentin slapped a one-out single and Alonso came up next and lofted a fly ball to right-center field. Scott Hairston was unable to make the sliding catch and Quentin, running hard all of the way from first, scored after the 6-foot-2, 235 pounder barreled into catcher Josh Thole at the plate and knocked the ball free.

"Carlos went in there with the intent to score," Padres manager Bud Black said.

John Baker's looping single into left brought home Alonso for a 3-1 Padres margin.

Earlier, Ronny Cedeno's RBI single in the fourth gave the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Alonso's one-out base hit in the fifth broke up Dickey's no-hitter, but the home team didn't need a hit to tie the game in the sixth.

Everth Cabrera worked a leadoff walk, scampered to second on Richard's sacrifice bunt, swiped third and scored on Chris Denorfia's sacrifice fly to right, knotting the game at 1-1.

    Game Notes

Alonso is 8-for-20 (.400) over his last four games with two RBI and three runs scored...Street extended his scoreless innings streak to 17 1/3 frames. He last allowed a run to the Oakland A's on June 17...Cabrera is a perfect 19- for-19 in stolen base attempts this year...San Diego moved to 39-0 when leading after eight...San Diego has won eight of its last 10 home games.
