    Left wing locks

Alexander Ovechkin led his position in goals, assists, and power play points last season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - There's no guesswork required when talking best left wing in the NHL - that's Alexander Ovechkin. It's how you rank them from there on down which likely determines the winners and the runners-up.

Below is our Top-10 fantasy left wingers.

Alexander Ovechkin, Washington - Ovechkin did everything he was supposed to do as a No.1 overall draft choice. He led his position in goals (56), assists (54), power play points (46) and took almost 200 more shots than any other left winger.

Zach Parise, New Jersey - Parise's numbers took a huge jump in 2008, from 65 points to 94 points (45 G, 49 A). He also took the third-most shots, 364, behind only Ovechkin (528) and Eric Staal (372).

Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta - Despite playing for one of the weaker teams, Kovalchuk continues to put up very good numbers year after year. Ninety-one points (43 G, 48 A) has him hanging with almost anyone at the left wing position. Only a "soft" plus/minus rating could keep him from being top-five winger once again this year. He's in the final year of his contract which never hurts as an incentive to play hard.

Daniel Sedin, Vancouver - Sedin set a career high in assists to go along with 31 goals, the second-highest total of his career. He has a fat, new, five-year deal and should be comfortable enough to match last year's statistics.

Danny Heatley, San Jose - The last two seasons have been a "little off" for Heatley who cracked the 100-point mark in 2005 and 2006, but the entire Ottawa team disappointed last year. He looked pretty good at the World Championships and thus I think he'll return to form with his new team in San Jose.

Rick Nash, Columbus - Nash led Columbus to its first-ever post season appearance, by putting the puck in the net. His 40 goals was the best since 2003 and his total of 79 points was a career high and an increase for the third consecutive season.

Simon Gagne, Philadelphia - Returning from an injury-plagued 2007 (played just 25 games), Gagne posted 34 goals and 40 assists for 74 points. If he stays healthy he should crack the 40-goal mark and he'll give you a solid plus/minus total too.

Michael Cammalleri, Montreal - In his one season with Calgary, Cammalleri posted a career-high 39 goals to go along with 43 assists. He jumped to Montreal in the offseason and should challenge as a top-five fantasy left winger.

Patrick Marleau, San Jose - After a mediocre 2007, Marleau rebounded in 2008 with a career high in goals (38). Marleau is still a good creator and a solid option at wing in any format.

Thomas Vanek, Buffalo - He is two years removed from his best offensive output, but he did put the puck in the net 40 times last year on a team that desperately needs scorers. He led the NHL with 20 power play goals last year.
