    Kolb Era begins

Kevin Kolb started two games for the injured Donovan McNabb last season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - With the news that veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb had been traded to rival Washington on Sunday night, the Eagles have given official notice that the "Kevin Kolb Era" has begun.

Whether it will be a decade-long run or a "one-year fly by" is yet to be determined, but it will be a difficult decision on every fantasy owner's mind come this year's training camp and all the way through their own Draft Day.

It's not like an Oakland Raiders quarterback position, where it doesn't matter much who is behind center, their fantasy relevancy is null. No, in Philadelphia the starting quarterback has all the tools to be a top-five fantasy performer.

First and foremost, Kolb has a head coach in Andy Reid who believes in passing the ball first and running it as a second option. Over the past five seasons, the Eagles have averaged 580 passing attempts and 4,131 yards passing.

The Eagles have two very talented wideouts - DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Jackson, a second-year pro out of California, made his first Pro Bowl this past season after hauling in 63 receptions for 1,167 yards (18.5 ypc) and nine touchdowns. He also ran one in from 67 yards out and returned two punts for touchdowns. Opposite Jackson is a No.1 draft choice (19th overall) in Maclin. Maclin had an unspectacular first season (55-762-4) but with more and more defenses designed to stop Jackson should thrive in Year 2. Kolb also has a solid third receiver in Jason Avant, who is particular adept at making the third-down catch.

The Eagles tight end, Brent Celek, exploded on the scene at the end of 2008 and in 2009 was one of the best in the league with 76 catches for 971 yards and eight scores.

In addition, the Eagles have always been a great "screen team" and although Brian Westbrook has moved on should still be good with second-year running back LeSean McCoy who caught 40 balls last season for 308 yards.

We saw a glimpse of Kolb ability last fall when he started two games for the injured McNabb. He went 31-for-51 for 391 yards in a blowout loss to eventual Super Bowl Champion New Orleans and 24-for-34 for 327 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kolb was a prolific passer in college at Houston, throwing for 12,964 yards and 85 touchdowns over his four-year career.

This situation remind me of Green Bay where the Packers had seen Aaron Rodgers practice for three years behind Brett Favre and "knew" he could play. If Kolb can do what Rodgers has done in his first two seasons for the Packers (8,472 yards, 58 TDs, 20 INTs), even the stubborn and often fickle Philadelphia Eagles fans should be pleased. Certainly fantasy owners would be.
