Fantasy owners fear a Jackson trade

Stephen Jackson led the Warriors in points and assists last season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The word being spread around news sites is that guard/forward Stephen Jackson has asked the Golden State Warriors to be traded.

He has offered up the Cleveland Cavaliers as his preferred destination and would be open to trades to the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks or Houston Rockets.

As a fantasy player, Jackson has been a very good contributor over the past six seasons. Playing for Atlanta, Indiana and Golden State, Jackson has averaged at least 15.5 ppg while contributing in all categories.

Last season he led the Warriors in points (20.7) and assists (6.5). He also contributed 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.

But a trade to a team like Cleveland, his first choice, could only hurt his fantasy value. If he was on the Cavaliers, he would not get the 16.9 shots-per- game he averaged last year with the Warriors. Only two players on the Cavs took more shots than the 997 Jackson threw up in Golden State and neither LeBron James (1,613) or Mo Williams (1,126) are going to pass up opportunities for Jackson. Neither will Shaquille O'Neal or Zydrunas Ilgauskas. So Jackson's shot total would drop.

But Jackson won't end up in Cleveland for one primary reason - he doesn't play good enough defense. Cleveland yielded just 91.4 ppg last year, while Jackson was part of a Warrior group that gave up 112.3 ppg.

He doesn't play good enough at the defensive end for the Spurs or Rockets either.

That leaves two possible destinations outside of northern California - New York and Dallas.

In New York, with head coach Mike D'Antoni running the show, Jackson would seem to be a perfect fit. They get up and down the floor in a similar fashion to how coach Don Nelson does it in Golden State. If he landed in New York, you could expect Jackson's numbers to hold strong. But Jackson also said he wanted to go to a contender, and if true, New York is nowhere near ready to contend with the likes of Boston, Cleveland or Orlando.

Which leaves Dallas. But the Mavericks already have forwards Josh Howard and Shawn Marion and don't need Jackson up front. They also have Jason Terry at shooting guard and I don't believe Jackson has the talent or temperament to be a pure point guard.

I'm guessing that Jackson will stay put in Golden State and put up another 20.7 point-per-game season, which is just what fantasy owners want to see.
