    Healing your injured pitching staff

After a poor debut, Tommy Hanson has posted two consecutive solid outings.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Is your pitching staff looking more and more like the starting rotation for the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs because of injury?

You are not alone. That won't make you feel better, but it's the truth.

Take a look around the league and you will see All-Star pitchers sitting on the sideline on almost every team. From Roy Halladay of Toronto to Jake Peavy in San Diego, starting pitching is depleted across the board. Even the bullpens are not immune with Brad Lidge, Troy Percival, J.J. Putz and Billy Wagner watching the action in street clothes.

As a fantasy owner you have a couple of options. If you were smart and drafted a deep rotation, then you can just sit still and plug in your backups. But most of us weren't that clever and we're combing the available free agent lists for starting pitching.

So here are a couple of guys who might help out on a temporary basis.

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta - Hanson is a youngster with just three starts and loads of talent. He's owned in only about 50% of all leagues, though probably higher in keeper leagues because long-term he's going to be a stud. After a poor debut, Hanson has posted two consecutive solid outings, going 5.2 against Baltimore for his first career win and last Thursday pitching six innings of three-hit ball in a 7-0 shutout of Cincinnati. If you're looking for immediate help, he'd be my first choice.

John Danks, Chicago White Sox - Danks has struck out 16 batters in his last two outings while giving up just three earned runs over 14.1 innings. He's had his ups and downs, but he's in a nice stretch right now. He's coming off a solid 2008 campaign (12-9, 3.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 159 Ks) and he's owned in about 70% of all leagues.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado - Jimenez is tough on your WHIP, but like his Rockies, he's going pretty well lately. He's won three consecutive games, including 6.2 innings of six-hit, seven strikeout ball last time out against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is prone to bad games, so you would have to spot start him. Owned in about 55% of all leagues.

Scott Richmond, Toronto - Richmond showed what he is capable of when he shut down the Phillies on June 17th going eight innings and striking out 11 batters. He's given up two runs or less in his last three outings and six of his last seven. He's owned in about 30% of all leagues.

Jose Contreras, Chicago White Sox - Contreras has an ugly looking 2-6 record with a 5.23 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP...but look closer. In his last three outings he's gone 22 innings yielding just 12 hits and three earned runs while striking out 13 batters. Owned in 18% of all leagues.
