Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
After losing his major league debut back on July 19th to Colorado by a 6-1 score, San Diego rookie starting pitcher Mat Latos has won four consecutive games.
Not only does he have a four-game winning streak, but he's allowed just six earned runs over that span. He's also struck our 19 batters over the last 25.2 innings so he won't hurt you in that category. His ERA is a solid 2.43 and his WHIP is a stunning 0.94.
Latos was 8-1 in the minor leagues with an ERA of 1.37 and 73 K's in 72.1 innings. He has plus velocity and plenty of movement on his pitches. He was the top pitcher in the Padres farm system as ranked by "Minor League Baseball Analyst."
Grady Fuson, San Diego's VP of Scouting and Player Development, said of him in spring training that "he has one of the most electric arms I've seen."
He is dealing with a bit of a wrist injury and will be held back until Friday for his next start, but you could get three-to-four quality starts from him before the end of the season or the team shuts him down. Latos has been prone to injury and the team has already indicated they will be cautious with him.
If you are looking for a starting pitcher, he's only owned in about 30% of all leagues. In my opinion, he'd be a better choice than picking up Pedro Martinez or a tired retread.
