Pittsburgh Penguins Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Christian Ehrhoff, D7/1/2014 8:34:00 PM
Description: After being bought out by the Sabres a couple days ago, defenseman Christian Ehrhoff signed with the Penguins Tuesday.
Insight: Ehrhoff inked a one-year deal worth $4 million. The 31-year-old Ehrhoff has averaged eight goals and 29 assists (37 points) per 82 games in his career. While the Penguins' top power-play unit has consisted of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, James Neal and Kris Letang the past few seasons, they just traded Neal and may go with Ehrhoff in his place in 2014-15.
Sidney Crosby, C6/24/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby has won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player for the second time in his career.
Insight: Crosby's first MVP came in 2007 when he was only 19 years old. The 104 points Crosby netted this year were his most since 2010. The former No. 1 pick should be an MVP front-runner for the forseeable future.

Description: Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik is doubtful for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Friday against New York.

Insight: The 30-year-old had 25 points (11 G) in 74 games with the Penguins and Panthers this season. The Penguins have given up 14 goals in the first four games of the series and Goc might help.
Beau Bennett, RW4/21/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Penguins right wing Beau Bennett had two helpers Monday in a 4-3 win against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: That gives Bennett four points for the series. Before the playoffs started, Bennett had just two points in his previous seven games.

Sidney Crosby, C4/13/2014 8:37:00 PM

Insight: Pittsburgh is preparing for the postseason. Crosby missed just two games this season and won the Art Ross Trophy (most points in the NHL) for the second time in his career with 104 points (36 goals, 68 assists). He'll likely capture his second Hart Trophy as well.

Description: Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik (lower body) returned to the lineup Wednesday, but will sit out Saturday, according to Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Insight: The 33-year-old has two goals and 11 assists in 71 games, so has limited fantasy value even when healthy.
Chris Kunitz, LW4/12/2014 2:10:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing Chris Kunitz (lower body) won't play in Saturday's game with Philadelphia.
Insight: Kunitz (35 G, 32 A) sat out last Sunday with a minor lower-body issue, but did play Wednesday. Sounds like they just want to make sure he's healthy for the playoff run.

Kris Letang, D4/9/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will return Wednesday against Detroit. It's his first game since suffering a stroke two months ago. SOURCE: Piitsburgh Tribune-Review
Insight: He may not play his usual 24 minutes a game but Letang is always a strong fantasy option when healthy. Even without playing the last two months, he's still tied for the team lead in goals by a defenseman (ten).
Brandon Sutter, C4/6/2014 10:53:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Brandon Sutter provided two goals Sunday in a win against the Avalanche.
Insight: He logged a season-high 23 and a half minutes of ice time. Sutter (13 goals, 13 assists) will probably see a similar workload Wednesday if head coach Dan Bylsma decides to rest Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz again.

Description: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin is still dealing with a hairline fracture in his foot and might miss the start of the postseason. SOURCE: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Beau Bennett, RW3/28/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh's Beau Bennett (broken wrist) scored a goal in his return to the lineup Friday against Columbus.
Insight: Bennett has taken over Evgeni Malkin's spot on the second line with Malkin out for the next few weeks. It's a talented line with Jussi Jokinen and James Neal, so Bennett may be able to help some fantasy owners.
Chris Kunitz, LW3/28/2014 10:17:00 PM

Jussi Jokinen, LW3/25/2014 9:54:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing Jussi Jokinen scored a power-play goal Tuesday against Phoenix.
Insight: With Evgeni Malkin out for 2-3 weeks, Jokinen (18 G, 33 A) is going to have to get more of his points with the man advantage. Ultimately, Malkin's absence will hurt Jokinen's value.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/25/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin will miss 2-to-3 weeks with a foot injury, according to NHL.com.
Insight: Malkin's regular season is likely over. The 27-year-old has 23 goals, 49 assists, 62 PIM and 191 SOG in 60 games and is impossible to replace. His absence will also lessen the fantasy value of linemate James Neal.

James Neal, LW11/22/2013 9:46:00 PM

Evgeni Malkin, CHot11/22/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal since Oct. 17 Friday against the Islanders. His six SOG were his most since Oct. 21.

Jeff Zatkoff, G11/22/2013 5:43:00 PM

Zbynek Michalek, D11/21/2013 2:55:00 PM

Beau Bennett, RW11/18/2013 3:35:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh winger Beau Bennett will get his best chance to be a factor in the fantasy world as he'll be on a line with center Sidney Crosby and left wing Chris Kunitz, according to Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Pascal Dupuis will play with the second line and Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. Nothing to cry about there. The Penguins have two of the league's best lines.

Description: When asked if there was any reason he won't play Saturday, Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis (undisclosed) said there is "no reason as far as I'm concerned."

James Neal, LW11/7/2013 5:53:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing James Neal (upper body) practiced Thursday, according to Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Neal, who missed his 15th straight game Wednesday against the Rangers, wasn't expected to practice until Friday. He still won't play Saturday against the Blues despite being one day ahead of schedule, but he could be back as early as next week.

Chris Kunitz, LW11/6/2013 2:47:00 PM
Description: The Penguins have downgraded left wing Chris Kunitz to a game-time decision Wednesday against the Rangers. SOURCE: Penguins on Twitter

Chris Kunitz, LWHot11/5/2013 6:08:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Chris Kunitz didn't skate Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury but is probable for Wednesday's game. SOURCE: Penguins.nhl.com

Insight: The left wing has eight goals and 15 points to go with an NHL-leading +12 (tied with four others), 10 PIM, five PPP and 52 SOG this season. As long as Sidney Crosby stays healthy, Kunitz will remain one of the top wingers in fantasy hockey.
Jeff Zatkoff, G11/2/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh goalie Jeff Zatkoff earned his first career shutout Saturday against Columbus.
Insight: It was only his third start of the year. The Blue Jackets managed just 19 shots against the 26-year-old.
Chuck Kobasew, RW10/29/2013 10:16:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh right wing Chuck Kobasew's lower body injury could sideline him for up to four weeks. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Kobasew isn't a particularly appealing fantasy option with just 31 goals in his last five seasons. Craig Adams is expected to absorb Kobasew's position on the third line.
James Neal, LW10/29/2013 7:41:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing James Neal (upper body) is still three weeks away from playing, according to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca.

Chuck Kobasew, RW10/29/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Chuck Kobasew is expected to miss two or three games with a lower body injury.

Jussi Jokinen, LW10/25/2013 9:54:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing Jussi Jokinen scored goal No. 5 Friday against the Islanders.
Insight: Jokinen has seven points in the first 10 games, including four power-play points. His value will drop off when James Neal returns and bumps him off the top power-play unit, but Neal will miss at least one more week.
Jeff Zatkoff, G10/25/2013 5:09:00 PM
Description: Penguins backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff will start Friday against the Islanders.
Insight: Zatkoff has played just one game this season and gave up six goals on 30 shots to the Florida Panthers. The 26-year-old will need a good start Friday to prevent the Penguins from looking at other backup options.
Beau Bennett, RW10/25/2013 10:34:00 AM
Description: Pittsburgh winger Beau Bennett is dealing with a lower body injury and was placed on the injured list retroactive to Oct. 12.
Insight: On the second line with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal, Bennett could have produced solid numbers, but missed out on this great opportunity. He has totaled just two assists in five games this season.
Kris Letang, D10/24/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang is expected to be activated from injured reserve Friday against the Islanders. SOURCE: Josh Yohe, Pittsburgh Tribune Review
Insight: Friday will be (most likely) Letang's season debut after missing the first three weeks with a knee injury. He's one of the better offensive blueliners in the game (38 points last season) and needs to be started in all fantasy leagues.
Kris Letang, D10/21/2013 11:49:00 AM
Description: Penguin defenseman Kris Letang (knee) is apparently close to returning, but might not return Monday since he then would get four extra days before the team's next game.
Insight: The blueliner hasn't played yet this season, but when he returns he's an elite fantasy player who has averaged 43.3 over the past three seasons.
Beau Bennett, RW10/21/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: Pittsburgh winger Beau Bennett is dealing with a lower body injury and is doubtful for Monday as he has still not returned to practice.
Insight: On the second line with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal, Bennett should produce solid numbers this season. For Monday, however, expect Chuck Kobasew to continue to play in his place.
James Neal, LW10/20/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Penguins winger James Neal will miss at least two more weeks due to an upper-body injury, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Neal played in the season opener despite dealing with the injury but he aggravated it and left after just 3:49 minutes of ice time. Jussi Jokinen will remain on the top power-play unit until Neal returns.
Sidney Crosby, CHot10/19/2013 9:45:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby has recorded at least one point in all eight games this season.
Insight: He has five goals and seven assists over his last four games and seven goals and 10 assists on the season. If Crosby can make it through 70 games, he'll easily blow past the 100-point mark, and he may even hit it if he only plays 60.
Beau Bennett, RW10/17/2013 1:43:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh winger Beau Bennett is dealing with a lower body injury and is doubtful for Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice.
Insight: On the second line with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal, Bennett should produce solid numbers this season. For Thursday, however, expect Chuck Kobasew to get that plum assignment.
Pascal Dupuis, LW10/15/2013 9:46:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis had a goal and one assist Tuesday against the Oilers.
Insight: Dupuis doesn't get any power-play time so his fantasy value is more limited than fellow Sidney Crosby wingman Chris Kunitz, but the 34-year-old managed to produce 45 goals and 97 points over 130 games the last two seasons and has two goals and six points in six games this year.
Chris Kunitz, LW10/15/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Chris Kunitz had two points -- one goal, one assist -- Tuesday against Edmonton.
Insight: That gives Kunitz two goals and six points in the first six games. He'll produce at that level as long as Sidney Crosby is healthy.

Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby had three assists and five SOG Tuesday against the Oilers.

Description: Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby recorded his eighth career hat trick Saturday in a win over Tampa Bay.
Insight: It was Crosby's first regular season hat trick since December 2, 2010 against Atlanta. Crosby, who saw 22 minutes of ice time in the victory, also added an assist.
Evgeni Malkin, C10/11/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal of the season Friday against the Panthers.
Insight: Malkin had two assists in his first three games. While he averaged 1.1 ppg last season, he played just 31 games due to injury and scored only nine goals after posting 50 goals and 59 assists in 75 games the year before.
Jeff Zatkoff, G10/11/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Penguins backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff gave up six goals on 30 shots in his NHL debut Friday at Florida.
Insight: Ouch. That's a poor first showing for a player the Penguins need to contribute behind Marc-Andre Fleury in the wake of Tomas Vokoun's blood clot issues that we keep him out for 3-6 months. Zatkoff had a 1.93 GAA and .920 save percentage in 49 AHL contests in 2012-13.
Kris Letang, D10/11/2013 5:31:00 PM
Description: Penguin defenseman Kris Letang (knee) skated hard before the team's practice Thursday but he did not participate in practice, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Insight: The blueliner hasn't played yet this season and is unlikely to play Friday at Florida. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma has said Letang needed to work his way back to practice before returning to the lineup.
Jeff Zatkoff, G10/11/2013 2:47:00 PM
Description: Penguins backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff will make his first NHL start Friday against Florida.
Insight: Zatkoff had a 1.93 GAA and .920 save percentage in 49 AHL contests in 2012-13. If he's anything close to that, he'll be a solid backup to Marc-Andre Fleury. Veteran backup Tomas Vokoun is out long-term due to a blood clot.
Kris Letang, D10/11/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Penguin defenseman Kris Letang (knee) skated for close to an hour Wednesday and could return as soon as Friday's game with Florida.
Insight: The blueliner hasn't played yet this season and while he is on the two-game trip with his team, he can't be counted on yet. Whenever he does play, he's a must start.
James Neal, LW10/10/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: The Penguins have already ruled left wing James Neal out for the team's next two games. SOURCE: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Insight: He won't travel with the team to Miami and Tampa Bay this weekend. Neal is still recovering from an upper body injury he aggravated in the season opener.
Jussi Jokinen, LW10/8/2013 9:54:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing Jussi Jokinen's hat trick helped the Pens beat Carolina, 5-2, Tuesday night.
Insight: Jokinen had two power-play goals in the game and should remain on the top PP line until James Neal returns.
Kris Letang, D10/8/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: Penguin defenseman Kris Letang (lower body) skated again Tuesday but is without a timetable for a return to practice.
Insight: The blueliner hasn't played yet this season after suffering a lower-body injury in the preseason. Letang is making progress, but he's not ready to practice yet.
Chris Kunitz, LW10/5/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Chris Kunitz had one of Pittsburgh's four goals Saturday against the Sabres.
Insight: It was his first of the season. Kunitz has the best spot in hockey as Sidney Crosby's wingman and is coming off a career year that saw him score 22 goals with 52 points and a +30 in 48 games. He's doubtful to be that good over a full campaign, but he's still a fine fantasy player.
Kris Letang, D10/5/2013 7:01:00 PM
Description: The Penguins tweeted that defenseman Kris Letang (lower body) skated Saturday but remains without a timetable.
Insight: Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Letang is making progress in his recovery. Getting back on the ice is a good first step towards returning to action.
James Neal, LW10/4/2013 5:17:00 PM
Description: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that James Neal's upper-body injury is closer to week-to-week than day-to-day.
Insight: Neal was a game-time decision for the season opener Thursday against the Devils due to an upper-body injury and aggravated it after playing in the first period. Beau Bennett is likely to replace Neal on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Jussi Jokinen.
Sidney Crosby, C10/3/2013 9:52:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby scored a goal and took four shots Thursday in Pittsburgh's season-opening win over the Devils.
Insight: Crosby had 15 goals and 41 assists in just 36 games last season but missed the last month after being hit in the jaw with a puck. If Crosby stays even remotely healthy this season, he'll come close to 100 points.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G10/3/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury shut out the Devils in the season opener Thursday.
Insight: Fleury saw 27 shots and stopped all of them. With Tomas Vokoun out 3-6 after having surgery to remove a blood clot from his pelvis, Fleury is the unquestioned No. 1 goalie for the Penguins. Jeff Zatkoff will back him up.
James Neal, LW10/3/2013 8:29:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing James Neal (upper body) missed the final five minutes of the opening period and didn't return to the bench at the start of the second, according to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: Neal was a true game-time decision for the season opener Thursday against the Devils due to an upper-body injury and likely aggravated it after playing in the first period.
James Neal, LW10/3/2013 7:13:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing James Neal (upper body) is playing Thursday against the Devils.
Insight: Neal was a true game-time decision due to an upper-body injury.
James Neal, LW10/3/2013 6:16:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh left wing James Neal (upper body) will be a game-time decision Thursday against the Devils, according to NHL.com.
Insight: Joe Vitale would take Neal's place on Evgeni Malkin's line if Neal cannot play.
Kris Letang, D10/1/2013 3:01:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang suffered a lower-body injury and will miss at least the first two games.
Insight: The defenseman is often injured but is one of fantasy's top blueliners when he is on the ice. Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said it didn't appear to be a long-term issue and he could be back as soon as Oct. 8.
Kris Letang, D9/28/2013 12:34:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang suffered a lower-body injury that will need further evaluation, according to ProHockeyTalk.com.
Insight: Letang won't skate this weekend and Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said it is unclear if it will be a short-term or extended injury. The defenseman is often injured but is one of fantasy's top blueliners when he is on the ice.
Paul Martin, D9/25/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Penguins blueliner Paul Martin missed Tuesday practice to attend to a family matter and his return date is unknown.
Insight: There is still plenty of time before the season begins, so no need to worry. Martin is a solid fantasy option after posting six goals and 23 points in 34 games last season.
Jussi Jokinen, LW9/22/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: Penguins left wing Jussi Jokinen could play on the team's second line with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal this season. SOURCE: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Insight: He'll have to hold off the organization's top forward prospect, Beau Bennett. Jokinen, who had a hat trick in Saturday's preseason game, had seven goals and 11 points in 10 games with the Penguins after coming over in a trade with the Hurricanes last season. If he locks down a spot with Malkin and Neal, he could have a big year.
Tomas Vokoun, G9/22/2013 11:23:00 AM
Description: Penguins backup goalie Tomas Vokoun is out indefinitely after having a blood clot removed from his pelvis on Saturday.
Insight: Vokoun took over as Pittsburgh's starter during the playoffs after Marc-Andre Fleury struggled again. The veteran dealt with similar pelvic issues in April 2006, missed the final few weeks of the season and wasn't healthy again until 4-5 months later. Jeff Zatkoff, who went 26-20 with a 1.93 GAA and a .920 SV% in the AHL last year, will serve as Fleury's backup to start the season.
Sidney Crosby, C9/14/2013 3:40:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby took a blow to the head in Friday's scrimmage, but came out of it without incident, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.
Insight: Crosby played just 36 games in 2012 and 22 games the previous season primarily because of concussion symptoms. For a skater who has posted 665 points in 470 games, the object will be to stay on the ice. So far, so good.
