    Tampa Bay Rays Player Notes
    For The Last 365 Days

    Chris Archer, SP5/27/2015 3:18:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer was great, but took a no-decision Wednesday against the Mariners.
Insight: Archer did not allow a run on just two hits and struck out 12 over eight innings of work. He owns a solid 2.12 ERA overall.
    Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B5/27/2015 11:20:00 AM
Description: Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera will hopefully remain on the bench for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Insight: Cabrera has sat out the past two games with a sore gorin, and with a career .130 BA (3-for-23) against Feliz Hernandez, Tampa Bay would be wise to keep him out.
    Evan Longoria, 3B5/27/2015 9:37:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria hit a two-run RBI double in the ninth, which almost ended being a walk-off homer.

    Asdrubal Cabrera, 2BCold5/26/2015 3:20:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left Sunday's game against Oakland due to a strained groin and will now miss a second straight game.

Steven Souza Jr., CF5/26/2015 3:09:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Steven Souza left Sunday's game with a left wrist injury and will now miss his second consecutive game.

    James Loney, 1B5/25/2015 3:05:00 PM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney has been placed on the disabled list with a broken finger.
Insight: Loney has never been a great fantasy option because of his lack of power, but he was hitting .275 with 11 RBI and 11 runs in 30 games. The Rays likely will use a combination of players to replace Loney.
Steven Souza Jr., CF5/25/2015 3:03:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Steven Souza left Sunday's game with a left wrist injury and is not in Monday's atarting lineup.
Insight: Souza hurt his wrist on a collision at home plate. He stayed in the game but couldn't swing very well in his next at-bat and had to leave. Souza is hitting .224 with seven home runs and 17 RBI in 147 at-bats this season.
    Asdrubal Cabrera, 2BCold5/25/2015 3:01:00 PM

    Asdrubal Cabrera, 2BCold5/25/2015 9:15:00 AM

Insight: Cabrera hasn't done little this season for fantasy owners to get excited about. He's hitting just .214 with two homers and 11 RBI. There are better options out there.

Description: Rays outfielder David DeJesus was 2-for-2 in the, 5-0, loss to the Athletics on Saturday.
Insight: Tampa Bay didn't score a run, so DeJesus was about the only player worth starting from the Rays on Saturday. He is hitting .330 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 106 at-bats this season.
    Matt Moore, SP5/23/2015 11:30:00 AM
Description: Rays lefty Matt Moore, who had Tommy John surgery last April, pitched a couple of innings in an extended spring training game Saturday.
Insight: Moore is targeting a mid-June return. He is just 25-years-old with a career 3.53 ERA and 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. If he returns as expected he could have solid fantasy value in the second half of the season.

Description: Rays shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is hitless in 12 career tries versus Oakland left-hander Scott Kazmir.

Description: Rays right-hander Alex Colome picked up a win over Oakland on Thursday night.

    Drew Smyly, SP5/21/2015 4:25:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Drew Smyly will need at least eight weeks to rehab his torn labrum.

Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria led the offense with three RBI on Sunday.

    Chris Archer, SP5/17/2015 5:35:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer pitched well, going six innings and yielding four hits and a run.

    James Loney, 1B5/15/2015 12:27:00 PM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney is a career 9-for-14 versus Twins starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: Loney doesn't have much power in those nine hits with seven sigles and two doubles, but a .643 batting average is still pretty good.
    Rene Rivera, C5/14/2015 10:06:00 PM
Description: Rays catcher Rene Rivera went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the, 6-1, victory over the Yankees on Thursday.
Insight: Rivera hit a three-run home run in the third and then had an RBI-single in the fourth. Rivera, however, came into the game with just two hits in May, so he isn't fantasy relevant. He is batting .141/.190/.242 with two home runs and nine RBI this season.

Description: Padres right fielder Wil Myers was scratched from Tuesday and Wednesday's games with left wrist soreness and he is doubtful for Thursday.

Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria blasted two homers on Wednesday night.
Insight: He has just three homers and eight RBI so far this year, but his ,284 BA shows that Longoria is still reliable option. Expect the power numbers to improve.

Description: Rays starter Jake Odorizzi pitched very well on Monday, allowing just one run in seven innings of work in a victory over the Red Sox.

Insight: Karns is still on a pitch count, as he threw just 66 pitches. He gave up two hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is not expected to return to the lineup this weekend as originally thought.

Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is 14-for-36 (.389) with six big homers against Baltimore starter Chris Tillman.
Insight: Longoria is batting .293, but doesn't seem to have the home run power with just one long ball and seeven doubles. Perhaps this matchup will help him find his power stroke.

Description: Rays first baseman James Loney (right oblique strain) is in Friday night's starting lineup.
Insight: Loney comes back to a tough matchup, against R.A. Dickey. He's just a .182 hitter (6-for-33) against the knuckleballer. Loney has always hit for a decent average, but lacks the power fantasy owners like from the first base position, so his fantasy value is limited.

Insight: Price has won six straight starts and pitched to a 1.88 ERA and a 99/13 K/BB in his last 11. In that span, he's thrown at least seven innings in all 11 starts and averaged nearly eight innings per outing. The Rays have won eight straight and are now 50-53, so they may just decide to keep Price.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B7/25/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist bounced back from a 0-for-12 stretch with four hits in four at-bats Friday night against the Red Sox.
Insight: Since June 25, Zobrist has gone 31-for-94 (.330) with six doubles, two triples, two homers, 13 RBI and 14 runs in 24 games. His numbers on the season still aren't impressive, but his versatility (2B/SS/OF) gives him extra fantasy value.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/25/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings has had a nice month of July, going 20-for-64 with seven doubles, two homers and 14 runs.
Insight: He's still hitting just .249 because he came into the month batting .235. Jennings is on pace to finish with nearly identical numbers to the past two seasons. At age 27, he's likely not going to improve much from the player he is right now.
    Alex Cobb, SP7/23/2014 10:42:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb struck out 10 batters and walked none over seven scoreless innings Wednesday at St. Louis.
Insight: Cobb has won his last four decisions, but this was his best start since June 18.
    James Loney, 1B7/22/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney is one of the rare hitters with a history of success versus Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Insight: Loney is a career .462 hitter (12-for-26) with a 1.154 OPS against Wainwright. He's a non-power hitting first baseman, who can hit for a decent average and knock in runs when needed, but isn't an everyday fantasy option.
    Yunel Escobar, SS7/20/2014 12:49:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar owns a .583 average against Minnesota's Kevin Correia.
Insight: Escobar is hitting just .249 with four homers and a .657 OPS in 281 at-bats this season so he won't cost you much Sunday, but he could be a good option against Correia. He's gone 7-for-12 with two doubles against the right-hander.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B7/19/2014 10:43:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is hitless in 16 at-bats against Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes.
Insight: Zobrist has raised his average from .247 to .267 and his OPS from .726 to .766 since July 1 , but this unfavorable matchup should be avoided.
    Matt Joyce, RF7/19/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: Rays OF/DH Matt Joyce has a career .467 batting average (7-for-15) against Minnesota starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: The total includes a double, triple and two home runs for a 1.686 OPS. Joyce is batting .270 with seven homers and 40 RBI.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/18/2014 5:25:00 PM

    Jeremy Hellickson, SP7/13/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson has been optioned to Double-A to make one start during the All-Star break.
Insight: Hellickson allowed oe run on six hits in 4 1/3 innings in his season debut on July 8 after missing the entire season due to elbow surgery. He had a 5.17 ERA last year but his career ERA is 3.69.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/13/2014 12:58:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings (knee) is not in the lineup Sunday.
Insight: Jennings left Friday's game after fouling a ball off his knee. He should be ready to play after the All-Star break.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/12/2014 3:43:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings left Friday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee and as expected is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Jennings' X-rays were negative so he should be considered day-to-day. At most he should miss the final two games before the All-Star break. He's batting .246 with eight homers, 24 RBI, 48 runs and 12 steals.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/11/2014 8:21:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings left Friday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee, according to Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Jennings' X-rays were negative so he should be considered day-to-day with a bruise.
    Wil Myers, RF7/11/2014 4:39:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers (stress fracture in his right wrist) has been cleared to begin baseball activities.
Insight: Myers suffered the injury on May 30 when he collided with Desmond Jennings. The 23-year-old reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been done little this season batting .227 with five homers and 25 RBI.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot7/8/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist has gone 11-for-26 (.423) with four doubles and a home run against Royals left-hander Jason Vargas.
Insight: Zobrist has raised his average from .247 to .268 and his OPS from .726 to .760 since July 1 with five multi-hit games.
    Jake Odorizzi, SP7/7/2014 10:25:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi struck out eight batters and allowed two runs on six hits over six innings Monday against the Royals, but the Rays couldn't get on the board.
Insight: Odorizzi is 4-8, but he's pitched better than that. The right-hander has struck out 109 batters in 94 1/3 innings this season and recorded a 2.97 ERA in his last 12 starts.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot7/7/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist has gone 13-for-27 (.481) with four doubles over his last six games.
Insight: Zobrist has raised his average from .247 to .268 and his OPS from .726 to .761 in that span.
    Jeremy Hellickson, SP7/7/2014 1:22:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) is scheduled to start Tuesday against Kansas City.
Insight: Hellickson has recovered from offseason elbow surgery and this will be his season debut. The team has already made room for him by moving Erik Bedard to the bullpen and optioning Vince Belnome to Triple-A Durham.
    Evan Longoria, 3B7/4/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria went 2-for-2 with a double and a solo homer Friday at Detroit.
Insight: Longoria's hits just aren't going for extra bases that often in 2014. He had just one in his previous 14 games and has 25 on the year even after Friday's game.
    Desmond Jennings, CF7/3/2014 12:23:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings is 1-for-12 with five Ks in his career against Detroit starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: Jennings' numbers -- .241, seven homers, 21 RBI, 41 runs, 12 steals -- put him on a similar pace as the last two seasons. He should be avoided Thursday against Scherzer.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot7/2/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 with two doubles Wednesday against the Yankees.
Insight: Zobrist has gone 11-for-32 with four doubles, two triples and a homer over his last eight games. However, the versatile switch-hitter is on pace for just 34 RBI in 521 at-bats this season.
    David Price, SPHot7/1/2014 10:27:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price narrowly missed striking out at least 10 batters for the sixth straight start Tuesday, but he still beat the Yankees to earn his seventh win.
Insight: Price uncharacteristically walked three batters, but he struck out nine and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. The left-hander has gone 3-3 with a 2.12 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and a 63/8 K/BB in 46 2/3 innings over his last six starts.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot7/1/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is 5-for-15 (.333) with five extra-base hits against Yanees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Zobrist has gone 8-for-24 (.333) with two doubles, two triples and a homer over his last six games and has a favorable matchup.
    Yunel Escobar, SS6/30/2014 9:44:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (shoulder) hasn't played since June 24.
Insight: Escobar was not in the lineup for the sixth straight game Monday against the Yankees. He's hitting just .244 with four homers, so it's not a big loss for fantasy owners.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/30/2014 9:32:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is 0-for-7 against Yankees starter David Phelps.
Insight: We're still waiting for the "real" Longoria to show up. Longoria is batting .264 with 10 homers and 37 RBI. If he's going to reach the 30-home run mark he's got to get going and Monday isn't likely to help.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot6/30/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is 5-for-12 (.417) against Yanees right-hander David Phelps.
Insight: Zobrist has gone 8-for-26 (.308) with two doubles, two triples and a homer over his last six games and has a favorable matchup.
    Kevin Kiermaier, CFHot6/29/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier went 2-for-5 with a solo homer Sunday against the Orioles.
Insight: Kiermaier has homered in back-to-back games and hit .306 with six homers, 12 RBI, 11 runs and a .934 OPS in his first 108 at-bats this season. He's worth a look if you're in need of power, but his average won't stay above .300.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot6/29/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist has gone 8-for-21 (.381) with two doubles, two triples and a homer over his last five games.
Insight: Zobrist went 3-for-6 with two doubles and a homer Sunday at Baltimore. The utilityman has had an underwhelming season, hitting .253 with a .732 OPS, six home runs and just 18 RBI in 269 at-bats.
    Matt Joyce, RF6/29/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Rays OF/DH Matt Joyce had as many hits Sunday as he had in his previous nine games combined.
Insight: Joyce (.274, 5 HR, 33 RBI, .784 OPS) went 5-for-6 with a double, two homers, four RBI and three runs Sunday at Baltimore. He had just one home run in his previous 65 games.
    Desmond Jennings, CF6/29/2014 10:43:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings has just 44 homers on his resume in three and a half seasons, but four have been off of Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez.
Insight: Jennings hasn't become the fantasy star it appeared he would be when he hit 10 homers and stole 20 bases in 247 at-bats as a rookie. With a .235 average, seven homers, 21 RBI, 38 runs and 12 steals, Jennings is on pace to put up similar numbers to the past two years, but he could be a viable option on Sunday against one of his favorite pitchers.
    Alex Cobb, SP6/29/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: The combined batting average from Jones (3-for-16), Chris Davis (2-for-11), Nick Markakis (2-for-10), Nelson Cruz (1-for-9) and Manny Machado (0-for-13) against Rays right-hander Alex Cobb is .136 with zero home runs and two RBI.
Insight: Cobb bombed against Pittsburgh in his last outing, but had shown progress in his previous two starts including yielding just four hits and one run against the Orioles in seven strong innings on June 18.
    Logan Forsythe, 2BHot6/28/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Logan Forsythe went 3-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, a walk and two runs Saturday at Baltimore.
Insight: The Rays are starved for offense and may get Forsythe's bat in the lineup more often going forward because he has gone 12 for his last 26. However, he's not a fantasy option.
    Kevin Kiermaier, CFHot6/28/2014 8:06:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: Kiermaier has batted .301 with five homers and a .911 OPS in his first 103 career at-bats, but his average won't stay that high. He's struck out in 21.2 percent of his plate appearances and batted .347 on balls in play despite hitting line drives at a 12 percent rate.
    Desmond Jennings, CF6/28/2014 8:03:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday at Baltimore.
Insight: Jennings hasn't become the fantasy star it appeared he would be when he hit 10 homers and stole 20 bases in 247 at-bats as a rookie. With a .235 average, seven homers, 21 RBI, 38 runs and 12 steals, Jennings is on pace to put up similar numbers to the past two years.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/27/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 in the second game of a day/night doubleheader Friday against Baltimore.
Insight: All three of his hits were singles. Longoria's current pace calls for 20 HR and 73 RBI. Those projected totals are both significantly lower than what Longoria posted during the 2013 season (32 HR, 88 RBI in 160 games).
    Brandon Guyer, LF6/27/2014 9:55:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder Brandon Buyer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader with Baltimore.
Insight: That brings his average to .300 for the season. Guyer has seen regular at bats during Wil Myers' absence (out with a broken wrist).
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/27/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria loves seeing right-hander Chris Tillman on the mound and fantasy owners like it too.
Insight: Longoria is a career .407 hitter (11-for-27) with five home runs and a 1.504 OPS versus Tillman. The five bombs are second most against any pitcher in his career (CC Sabathia - 6).
    Ryan Hanigan, C6/26/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Rays catcher Ryan Hanigan is questionable for Friday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: The 33-year-old Hanigan splits time with Jose Molina, but neither backstop is fantasy worthy.
    Yunel Escobar, SS6/26/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar is questionable for Friday's game against Baltimore due to a sore right shoulder.
Insight: Escobar sat out Wednesday's game, but could return for Friday's contest. He's not putting up fantasy-worthy numbers (.244, 4 HR, 22 RBI) and hasn't been there since a solid 2011 season.
    David Price, SPHot6/25/2014 3:39:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price threw 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball and struck out 11 batters in Wednesday's win against the Pirates.
Insight: Price (6-7, 3.63 ERA) has thrown at least eight innings in four straight starts and struck out at least 10 batters in five straight. He has an absurd 144/14 K/BB in 124 innings and his ERA is down to its lowest point since April 11. His 10.29 K/BB is second best ever among pitchers who qualified for the ERA title.
    Logan Forsythe, 2BHot6/24/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Logan Forsythe cracked three hits Tuesday in a loss to Pittsburgh.
Insight: Forsythe (.224, 0 HR, 5 RBI) has gone 9-for-16 over his last five games. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, only one of those hits has gone for extra bases.
    James Loney, 1B6/23/2014 10:20:00 AM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney is jusy 1-for-12 (.083) against Pittsburgh right-hander Edinson Volquez.
Insight: Loney is a non-power hitting first baseman, who can hit for a decent average and knock in runs when needed, but he hasn't put up an OPS over .778 since being a part-timer in 2007. Today's matchup should be avoided.
    Jake Odorizzi, SP6/21/2014 7:37:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi was dominant Saturday in a win over Houston.
Insight: He allowed just one hit over 7 1/3 shutout innings. Saturday marked the right-hander's second double-digit strikeout game of the season.
    David Price, SPHot6/20/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price lasted eight innings for the third straight start and struck out at least 10 batters for the fourth straight Friday against Houston. However, he dropped to 5-7 on the year after the Rays lost 3-1.
Insight: Price once again was bitten by the longball. He allowed a two-run homer to George Springer in the third inning and has given up 16 in 115 2/3 innings this season. In fact, he has three more homers allowed than walks. The left-hander leads the majors with 133 Ks, but his ERA is 3.81.
    Matt Joyce, RF6/20/2014 3:11:00 PM
Description: Rays OF/DH Matt Joyce will not start Friday night, despite a right-hander on the mound for Houston
Insight: Joyce (.266, 3 HR, 26RBI) can't hit lefties and rarely starts against them, but usually gets the nod with righties on the hill. Jerry Sands (.200, 1 HR, 4 RBI in 15 at-bats) will be the DH.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/20/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is not in Friday's starting lineup versus Jarred Cosart and the Houston Astros.
Insight: Zobrist (.248, 5 HR, 15 RBI) is producing at his lowest level in years, so this is not the end of the world. He's a career 1-for-6 versus Cosart and just 4-for-23 over the past seven days. Looks like he can use a day off.
    Kevin Kiermaier, CFHot6/19/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Thursday against the Astros.
Insight: Kiermaier has gone 24-for-76 (.316) with seven doubles, two triples and four homers this season. He was pushed into a starting role following Wil Myers' injury and hit third in the order Thursday.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/19/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria homered Thursday against the Astros.
Insight: Longoria has four home runs and five doubles in June after picking up just 13 extra-base hits (5 HR) in the first two months of the season.
    Chris Archer, SPHot6/19/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer held Houston to three hits and struck out eight over 6 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday night.
Insight: Archer is now 4-4 and has recorded a 0.86 ERA and 43 strikeouts in his last 40 2/3 innings.
    David DeJesus, LF6/19/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus fractured a bone in his left hand on a check swing Wednesday, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: DeJesus will be in a splint for three weeks and could be out until August. The outfielder has never been a good fantasy option because he doesn't hit for power or average and doesn't steal bases.
    Chris Archer, SPHot6/19/2014 11:52:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer has posted a 1.06 ERA in his last six starts.
Insight: Since mid-May Archer has been excellent, yielding just four earned runs in his last 34 innings pitched. Don't be fooled by his 3-4 record, he should post good numbers against Houston on Thursday.
Alex Cobb, SP 6/18/2014 6:21:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb has given up seven hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out 17 batters in his last 13 1/3 innings.
Insight: Cobb has bounced back after allowing 16 runs on 24 hits in 15 1/3 innings from May 27 to June 7. His ERA dropped to 3.48 after he threw seven innings and allowed zero earned runs against the Orioles Wednesday afternoon.
    Desmond Jennings, CF6/17/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings only has 42 homers in his career, but three are against Tuesday night starter Miguel Gonzalez.
Insight: Jennings' offensive numbers (.242, 5 HR, 19 RBI, 32 runs, 12 steals) have been underwhelming to say the least, but he is batting .318 over the past five games. He might be worth a flier Tuesday.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot6/16/2014 10:17:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is a career .400 hitter (10-for-25) against Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Zobrist (.260, 5 HR, 15 RBI) had a solid six-hit weekend series, so heads into this favorable matchup on a high after raising his batting average 14 points in three games.
    Jake McGee, RP6/15/2014 8:59:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander Jake McGee had arthroscopic elbow surgery on Friday and will begin the season on the disabled list, according to Marc Topkin of the Tama Bay Times.
Insight: McGee well last season going 5-2 with a 1.89 ERA, 0.897 WHIP and 19 saves in 23 opportunities. Ernesto Frieri might get the first shot at the closer's role.
    Ben Zobrist, 2BHot6/15/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist enjoyed a three-hit game Sunday against Houston.
Insight: It was his second three-hit game of the series. Zobrist (.260, 5 HR, 15 RBI) has watched his average rise 19 points in the last four games. We'll see if Zobrist can stay hot Monday against Baltimore.
    David Price, SP6/15/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price (8 IP, 5 H, 3 ER) earned ten punchouts Sunday in a win over Houston.
Insight: He's recorded double-digit K's in each of his last three starts. Price's 121 strikeouts are the most in MLB and it's not that close. Stephen Strasburg is second (113 K's) with Felix Hernandez one behind Strasburg. All three have made 15 starts this season.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/14/2014 8:34:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Saturday against the Astros.
Insight: Longoria has five extra-base hits (3 HR) in 49 at-bats this month after producing the same amount in 114 at-bats last month. He has just 18 extra-base hits in 268 at-bats this season.
Jake Odorizzi, SP 6/10/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Jake Odorizzi fell to 2-7 despite holding the Cardinals to one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings Tuesday night.
Insight: The Rays were shut out for the third straight game and have the worst record in baseball. Odorizzi's fielding-independent numbers are solid -- 10.52 K/9, 3.6 BB/9, 0.83 HR/9 -- but he has a 4.85 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
    David DeJesus, LF6/10/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus is 9-for-24 (.360) with six extra-base hits against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Insight: DeJesus (.265. 5 HR, 17 RBI) has done most of his damage this season at home against right-handers. That's the situation on Tuesday in this favorable matchup. He's worth a flier.
    Grant Balfour, RPCold6/9/2014 12:06:00 PM
Description: Rays manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Grant Balfour "absolutely" is still the closer, but after another horrible outing he announced on Monday morning that the position was now a "closer-by-committee."
Insight: Balfour allowed five runs on Sunday to raise his ERA to an ugly 6.46 and a WHIP of 1.65. Jake McGee, Juan Carlos Oviedo and Joel Peralta are possible options.
    David Price, SP6/9/2014 11:23:00 AM
Description: Rays starter David Price has pitched better of late with a 1.88 ERA over his last two starts depite failing to win either game.
Insight: His best outing of the season was against Seattle on May 13 (9.0 IP, six hits, 1 ER, 12 Ks) and he could to do it again on Monday night.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/9/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist is 4-for-7 with a pair of home runs versus Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez.
Insight: Zobrist has done little since returning from the disabled list, but should be excited about this matchup. He's always been a box score filler despite a mediocre batting average.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/8/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist is someone to avoid Sunday against the Mariners.
Insight: Felix Hernandez has held Zobrist (.245, 5 HR, 13 RBI) to three hits in 28 at-bats (.107).
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/7/2014 7:51:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has picked up an extra-base hit in each of his last four games, including two homers.
Insight: That's a good sign. Longoria has just 17 extra-base hits (7 HR) in 246 at-bats this season.
    Alex Cobb, SPCold6/7/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: The Mariners hammered Rays starter Alex Cobb for 10 hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday.
Insight: Cobb's ERA has gone from 1.40 to 4.39 in his last three starts due to a 9.39 ERA in that span. With a 3.63 FIP and a 52.5 GB%, Cobb should be fine.
    Erik Bedard, SP6/6/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander Erik Bedard tossed six shutout frames Friday in a win over Seattle.
Insight: Bedard, a player the Rays picked up off the scrap heap at the start of the year, has been surprisingly effective this season. In 11 games (ten starts), the 35-year-old is 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA. His next start is Wednesday against the Cardinals.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/5/2014 8:09:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist homered for the second straight game Thursday against the Marlins.
Insight: Prior to Wednesday, Zobrist hadn't homered since April 13. He's hitting .251 with a .712 OPS in 183 at-bats.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/4/2014 11:00:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Wednesday against Miami.
Insight: Fantasy owners are still waiting for Longoria to meet expectations. He has just 14 extra-base hits in 258 plate appearances.
    David Price, SP6/4/2014 10:57:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price has a 4.03 ERA even though his K/BB is 101/9 in 91 2/3 innings.
Insight: Price struck out 11 batters and didn't walk anyone in 7 1/3 innings Wednesday against Miami. He allowed five runs, but just one was earned. The 28-year-old has had a problem with the longball this season; he's allowed 1.28 HR/9. However, his impressive K/BB suggests he'll improve his ERA.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/4/2014 10:54:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist found his power stroke Wednesday against the Marlins.
Insight: Zobrist homered for the first time since April 13. He's hitting .251 with a .696 OPS this season, though June and July have been his best two months from an OPS standpoint in his career.
    Jeremy Hellickson, SP6/4/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Saturday, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Hellickson is still recovering from offseason elbow surgery. He's coming off a year in which he had a 5.17 ERA in 174 innings, and although he had a 3.02 ERA in 2011-12 his FIP was 4.52 in that span.
    Chris Archer, SPHot6/3/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer pitched well Tuesday in a loss to Miami.
Insight: He only allowed one run in seven innings. Archer got off to a rocky start this year but he's really picked it up over his last four starts (1.09 ERA, 31 K's in 24 2/3 IP). Make sure he's in your lineup next time out against the Mariners.
    Desmond Jennings, CF6/3/2014 6:48:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings isn't starting Tuesday against Miami. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Bay Tribune
Insight: Jennings' offensive numbers (.237, 5 HR, 14 RBI) have been underwhelming to say the least. At least he has 11 stolen bases. Kevin Kiermaier (.316, 2 HR, 3 RBI) is getting the start in center field.
    David Price, SP6/3/2014 6:28:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price avoided a suspension for hitting David Ortiz in the hip on Friday night.
Insight: Boston starter Brandon Workman was later ejected for throwing behind Evan Longoria's head in the sixth inning and suspended for six games Tuesday. Ortiz wasn't happy about Price avoiding punishment. "I don't think what they're doing is fair," Ortiz said. "I think the rules should be for everybody. We didn't start this up. I didn't hit nobody. Workman didn't hit anybody in the first inning. (Price) did."
    Wil Myers, RF6/3/2014 4:18:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers will miss at least two months due to a small stress fracture in his right wrist, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Myers suffered the injury on May 30 when he collided with Desmond Jennings. The 23-year-old reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been awful this season and this just adds injury to insult.
    Evan Longoria, 3B6/3/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is a career .600 hitter (6-for-10) with three home runs and six RBI against Miami starter Henderson Alvarez.
Insight: Longoria is producing nowhere near expectations for the talent third baseman, batting just .264 with five homers, 23 RBI and a .694 OPS. In his firs six seasons his lowest OPS was .842.
    Yunel Escobar, SS6/1/2014 1:08:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to a tight quad, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Escobar exited Friday's game in the tenth inning because of the injury and sat out Saturday. He tested the quad in pre-game warmups Sunday and determined he isn't ready to play.
    Wil Myers, RF6/1/2014 10:49:00 AM
Description: The Rays have placed Wil Myers on the disabled list with a sprained right wrist.
Insight: Myers collided with Desmond Jennings in Friday night's game. The 23-year-old reigning AL Rookie of the Year has had a sophomore slump this season and is hitting .227 with five homers, 25 RBI, 26 runs and a .667 OPS in 53 games. In his absence, the Rays will probably give more at-bats to utilityman Sean Rodriguez, who has hit .232 with six homers and 20 RBI in 82 at-bats this year.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B6/1/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist has gone 1-for-8 in two games since he returned from the disabled list and doesn't have a good matchup Sunday.
Insight: Red Sox lefty Jon Lester has held Zobrist to a .188 average (9-for-48) while striking him out 18 times.
    Desmond Jennings, CFCold6/1/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings has to be happy to see May go. He hit .198 during the month.
Insight: Jennings is look for a fresh start Sunday against Boston's Jon Lester, a pitching he has hit .360 with two doubles, a triple and a homer against in 25 at-bats.
    Ali Solis, C5/31/2014 8:02:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Ali Solis had to leave Saturday's game after getting hit in the face by a foul ball. SOURCE: MLB on Fox
Insight: The ball bounced off home plate before coming back and hitting Solis right below the helmet. Jose Molina (.133, 0 HR, 0 RBI) entered the game with a 1-2 count and struck out on the very next pitch.
    Yunel Escobar, SS5/31/2014 4:17:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar will sit out Saturday against the Red Sox. SOURCE: Joe Smith, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Escobar exited last night's game in the tenth inning because of a tight quad. Ben Zobrist (.253, 3 HR, 10 RBI) will slide over to shortstop with Sean Rodriguez (.241, 6 HR, 20 RBI) filling in at second base.
    Wil Myers, RF5/31/2014 3:45:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Myers collided with Desmond Jennings in Friday night's game and came out of it with a sore right wrist. Matt Joyce will get the start. Myers is struggling to live up to expectations, batting just .227 with five homers and 25 RBI.
    Ben Zobrist, 2B5/30/2014 1:40:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist has been activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: He was out with a dislocated left thumb. Zobrist owners are looking for more than the .260 with three homers and nine RBI that the 2B has produced to date. His .716 OPS is the worst since 2010.
