Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder (concussion) has officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: Ponder's injury will put Matt Cassel in line to be the quarterback. Adrian Peterson owners will be happy as he's averaged 175 ypg with Cassel under center. Cassel also gets the ball to Greg Jennings better than Ponder or Josh Freeman so his value could climb a little.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder (concussion) missed another practice Thursday and its probably unlikely that we will see him ready for Sunday's game.
Insight: Ponder's injury should put Matt Cassel in line to be the quarterback. Adrian Peterson owersn will be happy as he's averaged 175 ypg with Cassel under center. Cassel also gets the ball to Greg Jennings better than Ponder or Josh Freeman so his value could climb a little.
Description: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson gashed the Bears for 211 rushing yards on 35 carries (6.0 ypc) Sunday.
Insight: The only thing that would have made his day better is a touchdown. The Vikings have heavily featured Peterson lately, giving him at least 20 carries in five straight games and at least 32 in the last two.
Description: Toby Gerhart is playing some of the best football of his career right now. Over his last two games, the Vikings backup running back has logged 158 yards on just 15 carries.
Insight: If Gerhart got any goal line work, he might be worth starting in fantasy leagues. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be happening as evidenced by his one touchdown in 11 games. The 91 yards Gerhart rushed for on Sunday were his most since Week 16 of the 2011 season when he racked up 109 yards in a win over Washington.
Description: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson had a stellar day Sunday against the Packers.
Insight: Peterson finished with a season-high 146 yards on 32 carries. He's been dominant against the Packers over the last two seasons. In his last five games against them, he's totaled 714 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Peterson is three yards away from his sixth 1,000-yard season.
Description: Minnesota halfback Adrian Peterson (groin) will play Sunday versus Green Bay.
Insight: Peterson was listed on the injury report as questionable heading into this game. He's far from 100 percent, but then again, Peterson at 50 percent is still better than most other running backs in the league. He rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown when he faced the Packers earlier this season.
Description: Minnesota receiver Greg Jennings will be active for Sunday's game against the Packers. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL Network
Insight: Jennings missed last week's contest because of an Achilles injury. He should have plenty of incentive to perform at a high level Sunday against his former team. As usual, he'll be a flex consideration.
Description: Vikings wideout Greg Jennings (Achilles) told reporters Thursday that he definitely expects to play Sunday against his former team the Green Bay Packers, according to startribune.com.
Insight: Jennings was expected to play in Week 11 at Seattle but experienced a setback and was a surprise inactive. The receiver has only had one game with double-digit fantasy points this entire season.
Description: Vikings wideout Greg Jennings was back on the field Thursday, though in limited form and is questionable for Sunday versus his ofermer team the Packers.
Insight: Jennings has only produced one good game this season, against Pittsburgh in Week 4. The odds aren't good for him to do anything this weekend. He managed just one catch for nine yards in their first meeting.
Description: The Vikings yanked Christian Ponder after he threw an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter Sunday at Seattle.
Insight: This could be the end of the Ponder era in Minnesota, though with Josh Freeman and Matt Cassel as the alternatives we wouldn't rule out seeing him again this season. Ponder completed 13-of-22 for 129 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a lost fumble against the Seahawks.
Description: Minnesota receiver Greg Jennings (Achilles) was listed as probable for Sunday's game against Seattle but he's inactive.
Insight: Rookie first-rounder Cordarrelle Patterson, who had his first career receiving touchdown in Week 10, should see his biggest role of the season. However, fantasy owners shouldn't start anyone from this Vikings offense besides Adrian Peterson and tight end John Carlson.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (shoulder) is practicing Wednesday.
Insight: Ponder exited last Thursday's game in the third quarter due to a dislocated non-throwing shoulder. He's expected to start in Week 11 at Seattle but is not a worthwhile fantasy option even in two-QB leagues.
Description: Vikings receiver Jerome Simpson was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge Saturday morning after refusing a breathalyzer, according to USA Today.
Insight: Hennepin County Jail records show Simpson was booked at 5:39 a.m. CT Saturday. The 27-year-old is on a 36-hour hold because it's the weekend. Simpson served a three-game suspension last season after pleading guilty to a felony drug charge in April 2012 and is on probation. He has 491 yards and no touchdowns on 33 catches this season.
Description: According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder's left shoulder dislocation is considered minor and could possibly start Week 11.
Insight: Ponder exited Thursday's game in the third quarter due to the injury, which he suffered while diving toward the goal line. We'll know by Wednesday whether or not Ponder will be able to start. He played well against the pitiful Redskins defense Thursday but will have to play at Seattle next if he's healthy.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder left Thursday's game against Washington with a left shoulder injury in the third quarter and will not return, according to NFL Network's Alex Flanagan. Matt Cassel has entered the game.
Insight: Ponder threw a pick on Minnesota's first drive but played well after that, completing 17-of-21 for 174 yards and two scores. Ponder suffered his injury trying to dive for a touchdown. He went to the locker room and was ruled out for the rest of the game shortly thereafter.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder will start in Week 10 against Washington ahead of Josh Freeman and Matt Cassel, according to coach Leslie Frazier
Insight: Ponder put together a solid effort, despite the loss, going 25-of-37 for 236 yards 1 TD, 1 INT. He also rushed for 29 yards and a score. It should be noted that the Cowboys have yielded up four 400-yard passers this season, so they aren't a great test.
Description: The Vikings handed off to Adrian Peterson 25 times Sunday at Dallas after giving him just 36 carries the previous three games combined.
Insight: Peterson had at least 15 carries in every game last season, but the team did not give it to him more than 13 times in any of the last three. He turned 25 carries in 140 yards and a touchdown and had 37 receiving yards in Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Description: Minnesota will make Josh Freeman a healthy inactive in Week 9 against Dallas, according to profootballtalk.com.
Insight: Freeman is completely recovered from his concussion symptoms but the team will start Christian Ponder for the second straight game, with Matt Cassel backing him up. Adrian Peterson is the only Viking worth starting in fantasy leagues.
Description: Minnesota will be without defensive backs Jamarca Sanford and Chris Cook this weekend who join FS Harrison Smith on the sidelines for the Vikings game with Dallas, according to beat writer Tom Pelissero.
Insight: With three starters out and the Dallas passing game led by Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten waiting in the wings it figures to be a long day for the Vikings secondary.
Description: ESPN's Ed Werder says he is expecting the Vikings to start QB Josh Freeman Sunday against Dallas.
Insight: Christian Ponder was predictably terrible Sunday night against the Packers, and the Vikings want to evaluate Freeman to see if they have anything in him. While Freeman can't possible be any worse than he was in Week 7 against the Giants -- he completed 20-of-53 for 190 yards with one pick -- the Cowboys D/ST still is the top fantasy option this week for owners who stream defenses.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder will be in the mix for Week 9's starter, but coach Leslie Frzier would not declare him or Matt Cassel or Josh Freeman next week's starter.
Insight: It's musical chairs with none of the three giving much fantasy value. At least the team won a game with Cassel under center - the other two guys can't say that. Avoid the Vikings passing game.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder will start Sunday's game against the Packers with Josh Freeman declared out.
Insight: Freeman's first start in purple was a disaster. Ponder's career numbers against the Packers aren't very flattering (68.0 QB rating, 47.9 percent completion rate in four starts). Even with six teams on bye, Ponder shouldn't be a popular fantasy choice in Week 8.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson said a hamstring issue made him "hesitant" last week, but that he's better now, according to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Insight: Peterson may also have been hesitant because the Giants lined up nine guys in the box and dared the Vikings to beat them with the pass. He should play better against Green Bay this week with Christian Ponder under center.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder could be in line to start Sunday's game against the Packers.
Insight: Josh Freeman's first start in purple was a disaster and now ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that he may have suffered a concussion. Ponder's career numbers against the Packers aren't very flattering (68.0 QB rating, 47.9 percent completion rate in four starts). Even with six teams on bye, Ponder shouldn't be a popular fantasy choice in Week 8.
Description: ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Vikings QB Josh Freeman suffered a concussion in Monday night's loss to the Giants.
Insight: Christian Ponder was getting reps with the first team at practice on Wednesday and would be the favorite to start in Freeman's place Sunday against the Packers. Neither one is a viable fantasy option.
Description: Even though he completed just 20-of-53 passes for 190 yards Monday against the Giants, Josh Freeman will get another start for the Vikings in Week 8 against the Packers.
Insight: The numbers don't do justice as to just how terrible Freeman was in his first Vikings start. He should improve with more practice time in the Vikings system but shouldn't be near fantasy lineups Sunday night against Green Bay, even in two-QB leagues.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson has been dealing with a hamstring issue, but is expected to play Monday night.
Insight: Peterson didn't practice Friday, but was back on the field for Saturday's session. "Superman" will be the Vikings' primary weapon against the Giants with newly-acquired Josh Freeman under center. Start him as always and enjoy the ride.
Description: The Vikings have placed safety Harrison Smith (toe) on injured reserve/designated to return.
Insight: Minnesota's defense has been terrible against both the pass and the run this season and losing one of its best players won't help matters. Eli Manning should have one of his better games of the season Monday night and Brandon Jacobs is a RB2 this week.
Description: Josh Freeman will get the start at quarterback Monday night against the Giants.
Insight: Monday will be Freeman's Vikings debut. Freeman was awful playing for Tampa Bay earlier this season and that was with better receiving weapons than the ones he has in Minnesota. He's not a recommended fantasy play even against a porous Giants secondary.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson is active for Sunday's game versus Carolina.
Insight: Peterson left the Vikings to be with his family after his 2-year-old son passed away earlier in the week. Peterson's mind probably won't be on football today but if you have him, you have to start him.
Description: According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, grieving Vikings halfback Adrian Peterson is expected to play Sunday against Carolina.
Insight: Peterson's 2-year-old son died Friday in South Dakota after he was allegedly assaulted by his mother's boyfriend. Players who have played with heavy hearts in the past have gone on to some incredible fantasy performances including Torrey Smith last season after his brother passed away and Brett Favre the night after his father died. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Peterson's family during this difficult time.
Description: Adrian Peterson, who was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota dealing with his two-year old son in critical condition, will be at practice Friday, according to Vikings beat reporter Ben Goessling.
Insight: Obviously AP's head will be elsewhere when he plays Sunday, but as long as he's on the field, he's a must start. Peterson has rushed for 421 yards and five scores over his first four games.
Description: It appears that Matt Cassel has officially passed Christian Ponder on the team's quarterback depth chart. SOURCE: Adam Schefter, ESPN
Insight: Christian Ponder (rib injury) has been cleared to play Sunday against Carolina but Leslie Frazier has decided that Cassel will get the start instead. With Adrian Peterson as the focal point, we wouldn't expect Cassel to throw for 300 yards but he should at least be good for four quarters of relatively mistake-free football.
Description: The Vikings have signed quarterback Josh Freeman.
Insight: As if the Vikings QB situation wasn't muddled enough. We still expect Matt Cassel to start in Week 6 with Christian Ponder hurting and Freeman new to the playbook, but all bets are off for Week 7.
Description: The broken rib Minnesota QB Christian Ponder suffered in Week 3 was close to his heart. SOURCE: Judd Zulgad, ESPN 1500 Twin Cities
Insight: Obviously the injury is a significant one and it should keep Ponder out for 3-to-4 weeks at the minimum. If backup Matt Cassel impresses over the next few games, Ponder could be holding a clipboard upon his return.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Matt Cassel is likely to start again after the Week 5 bye given that he led the Vikings to their first win of the season.
Insight: The inconsistent Christian Ponder sat out the game with a rib injury and while coach Leslie Frazier said Ponder was still his starter, we have our doubts. The Cassel-led Vikings scored a season-high 34 points on Pittsburgh as he passed for 248 yards and two scores without an interception. Ponder has thrown at least one interception in each game he's played this season.
Description: Vikings receiver Jerome Simpson pulled down seven catches for 124 yards on 11 targets Sunday against the Steelers.
Insight: Simpson has been inconsistent, catching five passes for 78 yards combined in games two and three and 14 passes for 264 yards in games one and four. He's averaging 85.5 receiving yards per game, but we don't have any confidence that he'll be a week-to-week starting option.
Description: Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson shredded Pittsburgh for 140 yards on 23 carries Sunday in London.
Insight: Peterson abused the Steelers on a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter and later scored from seven yards out. The 28-year-old had some difficulty finding room to run over his first three games of the season, gaining just 3.0 yards per carry on his last 68 carries after picking up 78 yards on his first rush of the season, but Matt Cassel opened things up a bit Sunday. Peterson now has six touchdowns and 421 rushing yards in four games.
Description: Minnesota quarterback Matt Cassel will start in place on injured Christian Ponder (ribs) against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Insight: The inconsistent Christian Ponder hasn't done much all season, so if Cassell plays well against the Steelers he could take the job away from Ponder. It has been three years since Cassel was fantasy relevant, so don't go running to the waiver wire to claim him, unless you are very weak at the position.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (rib) was able to take the majority of the team's practice snaps Thursday, but if his injury is still limiting him after Friday's practice, Minnesota could name Matt Cassel the starter for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Insight: Ponder has led the team to an 0-3 record with two touchdown passes and five picks this season. Cassel was terrible the last two seasons as Kansas City's starting quarterback, so we aren't hopeful that any Minnesota receiver will yield fantasy value this year.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder finished the game Sunday against Cleveland, but revealed afterwards that he is dealing with a rib injury. SOURCE: Pioneer Press
Insight: Ponder (25-for-42, 228 yards, one INT last week) has thrown five interceptions this season against just two touchdown passes. If Ponder's injury gets worse, the Vikings have a solid backup in Matt Cassel.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has now been intercepted five times in his first three games.
Insight: He's only thrown two touchdowns over that span. At least Ponder (25-for-42, 228 yards, one INT) had the decency to rush for 46 yards on five carries Sunday against Cleveland, though it probably wasn't enough to salvage the day for most fantasy owners.
Description: Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said the team is going to get rookie receiver Cordarrelle Patterson's lack of snaps over the first two games "rectified." SOURCE: 1500espn.com
Insight: Patterson has played just 11 snaps over the first two games after the team gave up 2013 second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-round picks to move up to take him at 29th overall. "He definitely deserves to be on the field more," Frazier said. "He's shown that in the few snaps he's gotten in these first two ball games." The rookie took the opening kickoff back 105 yards for a touchdown Sunday against the Bears and has the ability to be a Percy Harvin-type weapon for the Vikings if OC Bill Musgrave chooses to use him.
Description: Vikings All-Pro fullback Jerome Felton's preseason just went from bad to worse. Felton was suspended three games Monday for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Previously, Felton had undergone an emergency appendectomy.
Insight: Felton was probably going to miss the opening week anyway because of his surgery. His top-notch blocking helped pave the way for Adrian Peterson to rush for over 2,000 yards last season.
Description: Vikings All-Pro fullback Jerome Felton had an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday. SOURCE: Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Insight: He'll miss the rest of the preseason. Felton didn't record a carry last season but his top-notch blocking paved the way for Adrian Peterson to rush for over 2,000 yards. Hopefully he'll be ready to go by Week 1.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder said he's over his late-season triceps injury.
Insight: Ponder missed the team's Wild Card loss to Green Bay because of the injury. The third-year QB out of Florida State will have to make significant strides this season to be viewed as a viable QB2 and that figures to be difficult given that he has two new receivers in Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson and mostly because he'll be handing the ball to Adrian Peterson a lot.
Description: Vikings newly-acquired receiver Greg Jennings missed Wednesday's practice at the OTA due to an ankle problem.
Insight: Jennings needs to be healthy and on the field to develop chemistry with his new quarterback (Christian Ponder). Given that Jennings has had a problem with injuries the last few years fantasy owners are going to have to be conservative with their estimates of Jennings' fantasy value.
Description: Vikings superstar running back Adrian Peterson declared himself "pretty much 100 percent" from his Feb. 7 sports hernia surgery, according to 1500espn.com.
Insight: Peterson says he is lifting more weight now than he was before the injury. The 28-year-old rushed for 2,097 yards last season after tearing his ACL in December 2011, and suffered the sports hernia injury in Week 10 last year. He ran for 1,068 yards in his final seven games.
Description: The Vikings have decided to shift Joe Webb from QB to a full-time wide receiver, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Insight: Webb was thrown into the fire in January when Christian Ponder couldn't start Minnesota's playoff game against the Packers due to an elbow injury. Webb completed just 11-of-30 in the game and the Vikings lost 24-10. Minnesota signed Matt Cassel to back up Ponder this season. With Greg Jennings, Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright and rookie first-rounder Cordarrelle Patterson ahead of him on the depth chart and the Vikings using a run-first offense, Webb won't have any fantasy value.
Description: The Minnesota Vikings used their third first-round pick (No. 29) on Tennessee wideout Cordarrelle Patterson.
Insight: He's a bit raw, but has the size (6-3, 216 pounds) and speed (4.42) to become a No. 1 receiver. Patterson played just one season at the FBS level, catching 46 balls for 778 yards and five touchdowns. He set a Tennessee record of 1,858 all-purpose yards. He'll be a risky pick, but has a huge top end if he quickly develops a rapport with quarterback Christian Ponder.
Description: Vikings superstar running back Adrian Peterson vowed to run for 2,500 yards this season, according to Dan Wiederer of the Star Tribune.
Insight: We like AP's confidence, but we have no illusions of that actually happening. Fantasy owners will be ecstatic if he simply repeats last season's production (2,097 rushing, 217 receiving, 13 TDs).
Description: After trading Percy Harvin last week, the Vikings have snagged receiver Greg Jennings from the rival Packers with a five-year, $47.5 million contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Insight: Jennings was nagged by a groin injury for most of last season and only played eight games while catching 36 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. That came after he played only 13 games in 2011-12. Even if he stays healthy, having Christian Ponder instead of Aaron Rodgers as his QB will make it difficult for him to post his first 1,000-yard season since 2010-11 unless Ponder takes a major step forward. The signing probably does more to keep defenses from loading the box in front of Adrian Peterson than anything else.
Description: After being released earlier today, quarterback Matt Cassel has signed on with the Minnesota Vikings, according to Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com.
Insight: The inconsistent Christian Ponder has already been named the Vikings starting quarterback going into his third professional season. Cassel won't challenge the starting job but does provide the Vikings with a capable backup who can start a few games if needed.
Description: According to CBS Minnesota, the reason receiver Percy Harvin left the Vikings this season was not because of his ankle injury, but because of a blowup he had with coach Leslie Frazier. The team will explore trade options for the talented multi-purpose receiver.
Insight: Sources told WCCO's Mike Max that Harvin unleashed an "embarrassing tirade directed toward Frazier, disrespecting the coach during the season when Harvin was sidelined with an injured ankle." He had a similar blow up with former coach Brad Childress. There will likely be plenty of suitors for Harvin.
Description: League MVP Adrian Peterson had hernia surgery on Wednesday.
Insight: Peterson told ESPN that the pain he was in was a "10 out of 10" when he played the Texans in Week 16. Somehow, Peterson came back to rush for 199 yards and a touchdown a week later against the Packers. Peterson is a super-hero and should be the No. 1 pick in all fantasy drafts next fall.
Description: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been honored as the NFL's Most Valuable Player for the 2012 season.
Insight: Some thought Peyton Manning deserved the award but it's hard to ignore Peterson's absurd rushing total (2,097 yards, second all-time) and the impact he had on the Vikings, who went from 3-13 in 2011 to 10-6 this season. It would be an upset if anyone other than Peterson is the No. 1 pick in fantasy next season.
Description: Vikings defensive end Jared Allen had surgery to fix a torn shoulder labrum on Thursday.
Insight: Allen played through the injury all season and his stats suffered because of it (12 sacks in 2012 compared to 22 the year before). With a healthy shoulder, Allen should be able to return to the form that made him one of the league's most dominant defenders in 2011.
Description: Vikings general manager Rick Spielman is hoping the team will be able to retain wide receiver Jerome Simpson in free agency.
Insight: You probably remember Simpson for his absurd touchdown flip that was No. 1 on the SportsCenter Top 10 for about a year. The flip was pretty spectacular but aside from that, Simpson hasn't accomplished all that much in his four NFL seasons (1,278 yards on 97 catches). It's possible Simpson could play a larger role in the Minnesota offense if disgruntled wideout Percy Harvin asks for a trade but we're not too optimistic.
Description: Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said that Christian Ponder will be the team's starting quarterback in 2013. "He's out starter," Frazier said in his postseason media conference on Tuesday. SOURCE: ESPN 1500 Twin Cities
Insight: Ponder missed the team's Wild Card loss to Green Bay due to a elbow bursitis but backup Joe Webb did nothing to suggest he will be a threat to Ponder in 2013. The third-year QB out of Florida State will have to make significant strides next season to be viewed as a viable QB2.
Description: Despite their differences, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier expects receiver Percy Harvin to return next season. SOURCE: Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Insight: Harvin and Frazier allegedly had a spat last month but Frazier doesn't believe the riff will impact Harvin's future with the team. We'll wait to hear Harvin's side of the story before jumping to any conclusions.
Description: Elbow bursitis will keep quarterback Christian Ponder on the sidelines Saturday when the Vikings take on the Packers.
Insight: It's the first game Ponder has missed since becoming the starter halfway through the 2011 season. With Ponder sidelined, Joe Webb will draw the start at quarterback for Minnesota. Webb has not attempted a pass yet this season so the Vikings will probably look to use Adrian Peterson as much as possible on Saturday night.
Description: The Vikings still haven't determined whether Christian Ponder or Joe Webb will start at QB Saturday night for the Wild Card game against Green Bay but it is "looking more likely" Webb will start. SOURCE: Dan Wiederer, Star Tribune
Insight: Ponder has elbow bursitis and didn't practice all week while Webb handled first-team reps. Playoff league fantasy owners who are desperate for an active starting quarterback should hit the free agent wire and add Webb immediately.
Description: Vikings players haven't been told whether Christian Ponder or Joe Webb will start at quarterback on Saturday night in the Wild Card game against the Packers. However, the team is saying publicly that Ponder will play. SOURCE: Jay Glazer, FOX Sports
Insight: Ponder is dealing with elbow bursitis so Webb took all the first-team reps in practice this week. Webb started several games in place of an injured Brett Favre two years ago and played in limited duty last season. The QB should obviously be added in playoff fantasy leagues in case he has to start.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson was a full participant in Friday's practice and is listed as probable for Saturday's playoff game.
Insight: He has been on the injury report for one reason or another for most of the season, but that didn't keep him from coming within eight yards of Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing record. The Vikings star running back rushed for 210 yards in his first meeting against the Packers and 199 yards last Sunday. He'll be ready.
Description: Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield, who was a no-show for Wednesday and Thursday's practice, was a limited participant on Friday and is questionable for Saturday's NFC playoff game against Green Bay. He's dealing with pain and swelling in a fractured hand.
Insight: Facing Aaron Rodgers and the Packers' talented receivers without Winfield would not be good for the Vikings' defense. If he can't go, the value of Rodgers and his receivers must be raised.
Description: Cornerback A.J. Jefferson has been dealing with an ankle injury, but got in three full days of practice this week and is listed as probable for Saturday's playoff game.
Insight: If CB Antoine Winfield (broken hand) isn't available, Jefferson along with Marcus Sherels would have to pick up the slack which means trying to slow down the likes of Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb. Tough assignment!
Description: Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen, who has been playing with a sore shoulder, was a full participant in all three practices this week and will be ready to go against the Packers.
Insight: Allen hasn't been as dominant this season (12 sacks. 46 tackles) as he was a year ago when he produced a league-best 22 sacks, but he'll need to be at his best to help slow the Green Bay passing attack.
Description: Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield was a no-show at practice for a second consecutive day, but he is still considered probable for Saturday's NFC Wild Card Playoff against Green Bay. He's dealing with pain and swelling in a fractured hand.
Insight: Facing Aaron Rodgers and the Packers' talented receivers without Winfield would not be good for the Vikings' defense. If he can't go, the value of Rodgers and his receivers must be raised.
Description: Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder bruised his elbow Sunday against the Packers and was limited in practice Wednesday as a result. SOURCE: Judd Zulgad, 1500ESPN.com
Insight: Vikings coach Leslie Frazier didn't seem overly concerned about Ponder, according to Zulgad. Ponder is by far the worst of the eight quarterbacks who will play this weekend in the first round of the NFL playoffs, but he did have 234 yards and three touchdowns with zero turnovers last week against the same team he'll play Saturday night, the Green Bay Packers.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson has been on the injury report for one reason or another for most of the season, but that didn't keep him from coming within eight yards of Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing record.
Insight: The Vikings star running back and top candidate for league MVP and Comeback Player of the Year honors (along with Peyton Manning) rushed for 210 yards in his first meeting against the Packers and 199 yards on Sunday. This groin injury will not slow him down.
Description: Nine more yards. That's all Adrian Peterson needed to break Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing record Sunday against the Packers. However, fantasy owners won't be unhappy with 199 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries to go along with a two-yard touchdown catch.
Insight: Simply amazing. The Vikings running back will have to settle for the second-most rushing yards in a single season with 2,097 ... and a playoff spot for Minnesota. One year ago today, Peterson underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL; now he's on top of the world as a potential NFL MVP.
Description: Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson was kept out of pracrice on Wednesday, according to a St. Paul Pioneer Press report. He's dealing with a sore abdomen.
Insight: AD's quest for the single-season rushing yards record took a major hit Sunday after Peterson rushed for just 86 yards on 25 carries. He'll need a monster effort against the Packers next week to have any shot of approaching Eric Dickerson's 2,105 yards (213 yards to tie).
Description: Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson was kept on the sidelines late in Sunday's win against Houston because of a sore abdomen.
Insight: AD's quest for the single-season rushing yards record took a major hit Sunday after Peterson rushed for just 86 yards on 25 carries. He'll need a monster effort against the Packers next week to have any shot of approaching Eric Dickerson's 2,105 yards.
Description: After being held to 86 rushing yards on 25 carries Sunday against Houston, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson stands 208 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season record with one game left.
Insight: Peterson has rushed for 200 yards twice in the last four games so the record is certainly still in reach. The Vikings running back also needs just 102 yards to become the seventh player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
Description: ESPN Twin Cities reports that Vikings receiver Percy Harvin and head coach Leslie Frazier had a falling out recently.
Insight: Harvin and Frazier's relationship has always been pretty shaky but apparently the two went at it again in a verbal altercation earlier this month. ESPN Twin Cities speculates the spat could have something to do with Harvin being placed on injured reserve. Harvin requested a trade before the season and it looks like he might request one again this offseason.
Description: Adrian Peterson's pursuit of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record continued on Sunday with another 200-yard performance.
Insight: The Vikings running back is now just 293 yards away from Dickerson's all-time rushing mark and just 188 yards away from becoming the seventh player in NFL history to crack 2,000 yards rushing in one season. Peterson (212 yards, one TD Sunday against St. Louis) seems like a fairly obvious choice for league MVP at this point.
Description: Vikings receiver Percy Harvin tweeted that he would be undergoing "minor surgery" on Saturday.
Insight: Harvin didn't tweet any details about the operation but we're guessing he's getting his ankle cleaned up. The fourth-year wideout has been out since Week 9 with a sprained ankle. He was recently placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
Description: Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph (shoulder) is probable for Sunday's game against the Rams.
Insight: Rudolph has eight receiving touchdowns on the year but he's also recorded two receptions or less five times, including three with zero catches. Vikings QB Christian Ponder has been a mess since Week 4 and only had 91 yards passing in Week 14 so Rudolph represents a major risk. You don't want to be taking a goose egg from your tight end in the fantasy semi-finals.
Description: Before the first quarter was over Sunday against the Bears, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson already had 100 yards and two scores. He finished with 154 on 31 carries.
Insight: With top receiver Percy Harvin out, Minnesota is going to ride the super freak Peterson whether they're winning or losing. What Peterson has done in his last seven games would be amazing even if he didn't tear his ACL less than 12 months ago -- 152 carries, 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns. Peterson is on pace for a career-high 1,969 yards on the ground.
