Falcons add Pioli as assistant GM

Flowery Branch, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Falcons have named Scott Pioli as the club's assistant general manager.

Pioli spent the 2013 season as part of the media after four years as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. In his second season with the Chiefs, he was named the executive of the year by numerous outlets for orchestrating a turnaround that included an AFC West title in 2010.

Prior to joining the Chiefs, Pioli spent nine years (2000-08) in the front office of the New England Patriots. He helped New England to three Super Bowl titles during his tenure as vice president of player personnel, where he worked with current Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff.

"Scott is one of the most respected and adept talent evaluators in the NFL and a member of three Super Bowl championship teams," said Dimitroff in a statement Wednesday. "We have worked together well in the past and been friends for more than 20 years. We have had the opportunity to experience a lot of success together, and I am very pleased that he has agreed to join our personnel team so we can work together again."

Pioli began his NFL career as a scouting assistant with Bill Belichick and the Cleveland Browns in 1992. He spent the next three seasons with the Browns in their pro personnel department and was promoted to pro personnel coordinator when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996. In 1997, Pioli was hired as the New York Jets' Director of Pro Personnel, where he worked before following Belichick to New England in 2000.
