Bills place Kolb on IR, cut Leinart

Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - Kevin Kolb was placed on the season- ending injured reserve list, while former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart was included in the Buffalo Bills' latest wave of roster cuts on Friday.

A knee injury from a freak slip at training camp followed by a concussion in Buffalo's third preseason game has landed Kolb on injured reserve.

Bills coach Doug Marrone said earlier in the week that the team would consider making Kolb the designated to return player off of the reserve list, but that move cannot be made until after 4 p.m. ET on Sept. 3.

Undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is expected to start for the Bills in Week 1. First-round draft pick EJ Manuel is recovering from knee surgery.

Leinart, who was signed by Buffalo last week, was selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft. He has split the last three seasons as a backup with the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders where he has completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 4,065 yards, 15 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

The Bills released 17 other players, while placing wide receiver Brad Smith and fullback Drew Smith on injured reserve.

Buffalo also cut linebackers Kourtnei Brown, Keith Pough and Brian Smith, running backs Zach Brown and Kendall Gaskins, cornerbacks Crezdon Butler, Kip Edwards and T.J. Heath, guards Antoine Caldwell and Zach Chibane, defensive back Jordan Dangerfield, tight ends Dorin Dickerson and Nick Provo, defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert, wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders and center David Snow.
