Saturday, May 31st (All times Eastern)

Detroit Tigers (31-20) at Seattle Mariners (26-28), 10:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Detroit - Drew Smyly (2-3, 3.86) Seattle - Chris Young (4-2, 3.30)

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers will take aim at their third straight victory on Saturday when they face the Seattle Mariners to continue a three- game series.

Detroit came out on top in the series opener Friday night, 6-3. Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Rajai Davis all homered in the contest and Justin Verlander picked up his sixth win of the season.

Verlander allowed three runs and stuck out seven in 7 2/3 innings. Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless ninth inning to collect his second save.

Hisashi Iwakuma took the loss for Seattle. He allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings.

"I thought (Iwakuma's) stuff was just okay," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He elevated a lot of pitches tonight that he normally doesn't elevate."

Kyle Seager went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI, but the rest of the Mariners' offense struggled, with the rest of the lineup recording just four hits.

Seattle has lost three of its last four games.

Left-hander Drew Smyly has the task of starting for Detroit on Saturday night.

So far this season Smyly has spent some time in the bullpen, but done the majority of his work as a starter. In seven starts he is 1-3 with an ERA of 4.58, while he has not allowed a run in three relief appearances. In total he is sitting with a record of 2-3 and an ERA of 3.86.

Smyly will certainly be trying to avoid another effort like he had last time out. Pitching against Oakland, the 24-year-old let up a season-high six runs on eight hits over five innings of work. The Tigers lost the game 10-0.

His chances of improving are strong based on the opponent, as Smyly is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in four career appearances against Seattle. However, it should be noted that only one of those outings came as a starter.

The Mariners' hopes of collecting a win will fall on the shoulders of Chris Young.

The 35-year-old veteran has been a workhorse for Seattle's rotation, having pitched at least six innings in five straight games and seven of his 10 total starts. In that time he has fared well, pitching to a 4-2 record and a 3.30 ERA.

In his last start Young was as solid as ever, limiting the Angels to a single run on two hits over 6 1/3 innings en route to a 5-1 victory.

This is the first series between these teams this season. Detroit won five of seven meetings a year ago.
