American League Game Summary - Minnesota at Toronto
(Friday, July 5th)
Final Score: Toronto 4, Minnesota 0
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Mark Buehrle spun seven scoreless innings to help lift the Toronto Blue Jays past the Minnesota Twins, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.
Buehrle (5-5) scattered six hits while striking out five and did not allow a run for just the second time this season.
"I had everything working," Buehrle said. "I was making pitches when I needed to and it just kind of seemed like one of those games."
Jose Bautista and Jose Reyes each went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Blue Jays, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Kevin Correia (6-6) was dinged for four runs on a season-high 10 hits and three walks in six frames. It was just his second loss in his last eight starts.
Brian Dozier and Oswaldo Arcia had two hits apiece for the Twins, who have dropped six straight. It's the seventh time Minnesota has been shut out this year.
Bautista crushed a hanging curveball over the center-field wall for his 20th homer of the year to give the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead in the third. Toronto had a chance for more runs but a groundout from Rajai Davis left two runners in scoring position.
"I threw him a bad pitch right there," Correia said of Bautista's home run. "The home run was just a hanging curveball. Obviously a very good power hitter and he hit it out."
After two walks and a sacrifice bunt to start the fourth for Toronto's 7-8-9 hitters, Reyes lined a two-run double down the right-field line to increase the cushion to three. Bautista followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Reyes.
Minnesota's best opportunities to score came early. With runners in scoring position in the first and only one out, Buehrle was able to get Justin Morneau and Trevor Plouffe to strike out to escape the jam with no damage done.
Another chance came in the third when Dozier doubled with one out and advanced to third on a ground out, but Ryan Doumit lined out to end the inning.
The Twins activated Mike Pelfrey from the 15-day disabled list and designated P.J. Walters for assignment ... Reyes extended his hitting streak to eight games ... The Twins are 6-12 against the AL East this season with a current nine-game losing streak ... Toronto was 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while Minnesota was 0-for-5 ... The Twins have lost 16 of their last 20 to the Blue Jays.
