(Monday, April 16th) Final Score: New York 6, Atlanta 1 Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ike Davis clubbed a three-run homer, Dillon Gee tossed seven strong innings and the New York Mets posted a 6-1 win over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Gee (1-1) gave up one run on four hits as the Mets opened this three-game set just like they did their season by beating Tommy Hanson (1-2) and the Braves. New York posted a season-opening three-game sweep of Atlanta at Citi Field. "Anytime you give up one run against the Braves it's a nice outing," Gee said. Hanson was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on five hits in seven frames. He was the hard-luck loser in the Braves' 1-0 opening-day setback. Atlanta had won five in a row after an 0-4 start. The Mets, meanwhile, improved to 7-3 on the young season. "If they stay healthy, they have a lineup that can hit," Braves second baseman Dan Uggla said about the Mets. "They've got pitchers that are going to give them a chance. Their bullpen has been pretty solid so far. I never once thought they looked like a pushover or anything like that and they haven't been." The Braves loaded the bases in the second, but scored only one run on a groundout by Jack Wilson. Kirk Nieuwenhuis walked to lead off the third and advanced to second on Hanson's errant pickoff attempt. A sacrifice bunt by Gee moved Nieuwenhuis to third and he scored the tying run on Ruben Tejada's 6-3 groundout. The game remained tied after Jason Bay robbed Wilson of a home run with a nice catch above the left field wall in the fifth. New York grabbed the lead in the sixth on Davis' second home run in as many days. Tejada stroked a one-out double and Davis launched a two-out blast to right after Hanson intentionally walked David Wright. The Mets tacked on another run on a Hanson wild pitch in the seventh, and Bay homered off Livan Hernandez to start the ninth. Game Notes Gee struck out five batters...Jason Heyward had two of Atlanta's five hits -- all singles...The Braves were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position...Game time: 2:24. 04/16 23:20:35 ET |
