Nationals give Desmond two-year deal

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Nationals have agreed to a two-year contract with shortstop Ian Desmond and also agreed to terms with catcher Wilson Ramos.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deals avoided salary arbitration.

Desmond played in a career-high 158 games last season and slugged 20 homers while driving in a career-best 80 runs with a .280 average. He hit 25 home runs in 2012 with a .292 average and has been selected as the NL's Silver Slugger winner at shortstop each of the last two years.

Also chosen as an All-Star in 2012, Desmond has a career average of .273 with 67 homers and 279 RBI in 617 games since joining the Nationals in 2009.

Ramos hit .272 with 16 homers and 59 RBI in just 78 games last season, missing most of the first half of the campaign with a strained left hamstring. He played only 25 games in 2012 because of a knee injury after a 2011 season that featured 15 homers, 52 RBI and a .267 average in 113 games.

The Nats also avoided arbitration with lefty Jerry Blevins.
