Tampa Bay Rays Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

James Loney, 1BHot4/23/2014 9:22:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney stayed hot with three hits Tuesday against the Twins.
Insight: He's been ridiculous over his last four games, providing nine hits over that span (.563 AVG). Loney, who has never been a big power guy, is on pace for 97 RBI this season. Fantasy owners in the market for a corner infielder could do a lot worse than Loney (.302, 1 HR, 12 RBI).
David DeJesus, LF4/22/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus broke out of a slump by delivering three hits in Tuesday's win over Minnesota.
Insight: His first inning single ended an 0-for-24 drought. It's a start but DeJesus (.174, 0 HR, 3 RBI) still has a long way to go before we consider him a legitimate fantasy option.
David Price, SP4/22/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price pitched a complete game Tuesday against Minnesota.
Insight: Joe Mauer hit a hard line drive off Price's leg in the fourth inning but it didn't seem to affect him as the left-hander still finished with a season-high 12 strikeouts over 113 pitches. Price's next start is Sunday against the White Sox.
Matt Moore, SP4/22/2014 6:32:00 PM
Description: Rays lefty Matt Moore had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: That officially ends his season. Fantasy owners playing in non-keeper leagues can feel free to discard the talented 24-year-old.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/22/2014 3:59:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings (groin) did not start Saturday or Sunday, but is back in the lineup for Tuesday.
Insight: Jennings is batting .264 this season with one homer, five RBI and seven runs scored. The groin injury is likely to restrict his stolen base ability for a while. He's stolen at least 20 bases in each of the last three seasons, but has just one so far this year.
David DeJesus, LFCold4/20/2014 7:12:00 PM
Description: After striking out in a pinch-hitting appearance Sunday against New York, Rays outfielder David DeJesus is now hitless in his last 24 at bats.
Insight: Of all players with at least 40 at bats, DeJesus' .119 batting average is the lowest in the major leagues. DeJesus may not have a roster spot much longer if this keeps up.
Alex Cobb, SP4/20/2014 2:20:00 PM
Description: Rays RHP Alex Cobb (oblique) is targeting late May or early June for his return, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Cobb suffered a strained oblique last week and was given a timetable of 4-6 weeks. He's not going to make it back by the short end of that timeline.
Matt Joyce, RFHot4/20/2014 12:03:00 PM
Description: With lefty Vidal Nuno on the mound for the Yankees Sunday, Rays OF/DH Matt Joyce will take a seat.
Insight: Joyce can't hit lefties and rarely starts against them. The 29-year-old is hitting .349 with two homers, seven RBI and a 1.044 OPS in 43 at-bats this year.
David DeJesus, LFCold4/19/2014 10:50:00 PM
Description: The Rays scored 16 runs Saturday against the Yankees, but left fielder David DeJesus went 0-for-6 with two strikeouts.
Insight: DeJesus had zero hits in his last 20 at-bats and is batting .122 this season. The 34-year-old outfielder has little power and little speed so there's no need to own him.
Ryan Hanigan, C4/19/2014 10:41:00 PM
Description: Rays catcher Ryan Hanigan hit two balls out of the park and drove in six runs Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: The 33-year-old Hanigan had no more than two homers in each of the last two seasons with Cincinnati but he now has three in his first 37 at-bats with Tampa Bay.
Wil Myers, RF4/19/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers exploded out of a slump with a double, two homers, four RBI, four runs and a walk Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Myers has gone 6-for-9 with seven RBI in his last two games. He went 10 games without an RBI prior to that and didn't have a homer before Saturday.
Chris Archer, SP4/19/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer was roughed up by the Orioles in his last start but he gave up just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Archer has tossed three quality starts in four chances this year, but he gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits over five innings in his one non-quality outing. The 25-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 24 2/3 innings.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/19/2014 5:07:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings (groin) will not start Saturday or Sunday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Jennings has been dealing with a groin injury and will be limited to pinch hitting for the next two days.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot4/19/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria belted his second homer of the season and drove in four runs Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Longoria has gone 7-for-10 over his last three games and scored four runs in his last two after not scoring a run for 10 straight games before that. He's hitting .348 with 10 RBI.
Matt Joyce, RFHot4/18/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Rays OF/DH Matt Joyce is a career .357 hitter with three solo homers against Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Joyce is off to a fine start, batting .324 with a 1.002 OPS. Assuming the platoon player is in the Rays starting lineup, he should be in yours as well.
Ben Zobrist, 2B4/18/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist is a career .417 hitter (5-for-12) versus Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Zobrist's five hits have all been of the extra base variety, including two homers and a 1.783 OPS. He's batting .268 this season with a .388 OBP due to walking 11 times already. He's a solid play on Friday.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/17/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings won't start Friday against New York.
Insight: It's the first time he's sat out this season. David DeJesus (.156, 0 HR, 0 RBI) will fill in at center field with Matt Joyce (.324, 2 HR, 7 RBI) taking over in left.
Jose Molina, CCold4/17/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Rays catcher Jose Molina is hitless in 19 at-bats versus Yankees lefty C.C. Sabathia.
Insight: Molina (.111, 0 HR, 0 RBI) has no fantasy value.
Evan Longoria, 3B4/17/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is a .395 hitter with six homers, 12 walks and a 1.364 OPS versus Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia.
Insight: Longoria is batting .286, but without much power (.748 OPS) through 15 games. This historically favorable matchup could help.
Desmond Jennings, CFCold4/16/2014 11:27:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings has only four hits in 18 at-bats (.222) against Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez, but three left the park.
Insight: Jennings will try to snap out of a 3-for-20 slump Wednesday against Baltimore.
Matt Moore, SP4/15/2014 2:21:00 PM
Description: According to Marc Topkins of the Tampa Bay Times, Rays left-hander Matt Moore has scheduled Tommy John surgery for next week.
Insight: Moore was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his elbow which almost always means going under the knife, so this isn't a surprise. Moore was a fantasy stud last season going 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA and 143 Ks in 150 1/3 innings pitched. He was 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA before the injury.
Ben Zobrist, 2B4/15/2014 9:34:00 AM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist is a career .105 hitter (2-for-19) versus Baltimore right-hander Miguel Gonzalez.
Insight: Zobrist is a career .277 hitter left-handed (.256 right-handed), but hasn't had any success versus Gonzalez. Add in a strong wind blowing in from left field on Tuesday and you have all the ingredients for a low output evening.
Jake Odorizzi, SP4/14/2014 5:56:00 PM
Description: Rays RHP Jake Odorizzi (illness) was sent back to the team hotel Monday, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Odorizzi (1-1, 5.73 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) is scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Orioles. The team still expects him to make that start.
David DeJesus, LF4/14/2014 3:15:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus is not in Monday's lineup.
Insight: Btandon Guyer will get another start. DeJesus is batting just .172 this season. Guyer is just 1-for-8 with one homer. Neither is fantasy worthy at this time.
Desmond Jennings, CFCold4/14/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is just 2-for-18 (.111) versus Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Jennings was off to a nice start beginning the season with a pair of multi-hit games, but is batting just .167 over the past 11 contests and should be avoided on Monday.
Ben Zobrist, 2BHot4/14/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist is a career .435 hiiter (10-for-23) versus Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Zobrist is coming off a two-homer afternoon and has hit safely in six of his last seven games to raise his average to .277 with an .871 OPS. Add in a strong wind blowing out to left field on Monday and you have all the ingredients for another solid day with the bat.
Ben Zobrist, 2B4/13/2014 7:45:00 PM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist went yard from both sides of the plate and drove in four runs Sunday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Zobrist is batting .277 with three homers, six RBI and an .871 OPS so far. As usual, he's walking a ton (8 BBs, 7 Ks). The utilityman is a career .238 hitter in April, but he's off to a nice start for a change.
Alex Cobb, SP4/13/2014 6:09:00 PM
Description: The Rays expect to be without RHP Alex Cobb for four-to-six weeks due to his strained left oblique. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Cobb has a 1.89 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP in 19 innings this season. We won't see him back until mid-May at the earliest. Erik Bedard will take the open spot in Tampa Bay's rotation.
Alex Cobb, SP4/13/2014 10:50:00 AM
Description: Rays right-hander Alex Cobb strained his left oblique Saturday in a win against Cincinnati. He's already been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: That opens up a spot in the rotation for Erik Bedard, who was recently called up from Triple-A Durham. Cobb (1-1, 1.89 ERA) will be eligible to return on April 28th, though it's doubtful he'll be able to recover that quickly.
Alex Cobb, SP4/12/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb was dominant in Saturday's 1-0 win over Cincinnati (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 K's).
Insight: Cobb (1-1, 1.89 ERA) threw all zeros for the second straight outing. If Cobb keeps this up, he'll be a no-brainer for the All-Star team in a few months. His next start is against the Yankees (6-6).
Erik Bedard, SP4/12/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: The Rays have promoted left-hander Erik Bedard to the major leagues.
Insight: Bedard allowed one run in four innings Monday in his only start for Triple-A Durham. He could wind up in Tampa Bay's starting rotation now that Matt Moore is slated for Tommy John surgery.
Wil Myers, RF4/12/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers played in Friday's game against Texas, but will sit Saturday.
Insight: Myers is off to a slow start (.231, 0 HR, 4 RBI). Matt Joyce will start in right field.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/12/2014 10:44:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is hitless in seven at-bats against Cincinnati right-hander Alfredo Simon. Update: Jennings will sit in favor of just-brought-up Kevin Kiermaier.
Insight: Jennings is off to a nice start with an .837 OPS and leads the league in doubles.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/12/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is hitless in seven at-bats against Cincinnati right-hander Alfredo Simon.
Insight: Jennings is off to a nice start with an .837 OPS and leads the league in doubles.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot4/12/2014 9:32:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is a .308 hitter with a pair of homers and a 1.280 OPS against Reds starter Alfredo Simon.
Insight: Longoria has gotten out of the gate quickly, batting .359 through the first nine games and this favorable matchup should allow him to stay hot.
Matt Joyce, RFHot4/11/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Matt Joyce went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk Friday at Cincinnati.
Insight: Joyce is 11-for-26 (.423) with two doubles, two homers, seven RBI, six BBs and five Ks so far.
David Price, SP4/11/2014 10:32:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price came up just short of a shutout Friday at Cincinnati but he still picked up the win.
Insight: Price (2-0, 2.91 ERA) gave up an opposite-field homer to Joey Votto in the bottom of the ninth and finished with 10 strikeouts and one walk in 8 1/3 innings. Grant Balfour picked up the final two outs for his third save but not before walking three batters.
Matt Moore, SP4/11/2014 8:02:00 PM
Description: According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, Rays left-hander Matt Moore says he'll wait 3-5 days to throw. That will determined if he'll need Tommy John surgery.
Insight: Moore was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his elbow. Even if he tries to go the rest-and-rehab route, odds are he'll need the surgery eventually.
Cesar Ramos, RP4/11/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: Cesar Ramos will take Matt Moore's spot in the Rays' rotation, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Moore is likely headed for Tommy John surgery. Ramos had a 3.45 ERA and a 13/1 K/BB this spring but lost the final spot in the rotation to Jake Odorizzi. He's worth a look in AL-only leagues.
Desmond Jennings, CF4/9/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored Wednesday at Kansas City.
Insight: Jennings had two hits in each of the first two games but went 4-for-26 over his last seven prior to Wednesday.
Matt Moore, SP4/8/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that Matt Moore's injury involves his UCL. The Rays left-hander left Monday's start with elbow discomfort and was placed on the DL Tuesday
Insight: Moore will see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion after an MRI on his left elbow was inconclusive. Moore saw his average fastball velocity decline from 94.1 mph as a rookie to 92.3 mph last year and dealt with elbow soreness near the end of the season. He could require Tommy John surgery.
Matt Moore, SP4/8/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: The Rays have placed Matt Moore (elbow) will see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Moore's MRI was inconclusive. The left-hander left Monday's start with elbow discomfort and was placed on the DL Tuesday. Moore saw his average fastball velocity decline from 94.1 mph as a rookie to 92.3 mph last year and dealt with elbow soreness near the end of the season.
Matt Moore, SP4/8/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: The Rays have placed Matt Moore of the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow injury.
Insight: Moore saw his average fastball velocity decline from 94.1 mph as a rookie to 92.3 mph last year and dealt with elbow soreness near the end of the season. He's still awaiting the result of an MRI.
Matt Moore, SP4/7/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore exited Monday's game with an injury though it wasn't clear what was bothering him. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: Moore's night came to an end after just 4 1/3 innings. The Rays should provide an update on Moore's status later tonight.
David DeJesus, LF4/7/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus is not in Monday's lineup.
Insight: Btandon Guyer will get another start. DeJesus is batting just .172 this season. Guyer is just 1-for-8 with one homer. Neither is fantasy worthy at this time.
Alex Cobb, SP4/6/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Alex Cobb delivered seven shutout innings Sunday in a loss to Texas.
Insight: Cobb surrendered three hits and one walk over 97 pitches. Tampa Bay didn't score in this game, which meant Cobb (0-1, 3.00 ERA) had to settle for a no-decision.
James Loney, 1B4/4/2014 6:34:00 PM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney won't start Friday against the Rangers.
Insight: Though left-hander Joe Saunders is throwing for Texas, Loney actually hit the same against lefties as he did against right-handers last season (.299). Sean Rodriguez will get the start at first tonight with Loney likely to return on Saturday.
Wil Myers, RF4/4/2014 10:53:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers wasn't available Thursday and is questionable for Friday's game against Texas due to flu-like symptoms.
Insight: Matt Joyce (.556, 0 HR, 3 RBI), usually would take over in right field, but he's not very good against left-handers (career .193 batting average vs lefties) so Brandon Guyer might get the spot start.
Chris Archer, SP4/3/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer has agreed to a six-year, $25.5 million contract extension.
Insight: Archer was excellent last year in his first full year in the major leagues (9-7, 3.22 ERA in 23 starts). He went for only a dollar or two in most auction drafts and could wind up being one of the year's biggest fantasy bargains.
Sean Rodriguez, SS4/3/2014 8:32:00 PM
Description: Rays utility man Sean Rodriguez has been placed on paternity leave.
Insight: Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy got some heat on talk radio for beginning the season on paternity leave though we doubt Rodriguez will receive as much criticism. The Rays don't really have a spot for Rodriguez right now and neither should fantasy owners.
David DeJesus, LF4/3/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus is back after missing two games with a bruised foot. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: He'll serve as the Rays' DH on Thursday night. Logan Forsythe will draw another start in left field.
Wil Myers, RF4/3/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers won't be available Thursday against the Blue Jays. SOURCE: Shi Davidi, Sportsnet
Insight: He's out with the flu. Matt Joyce (.667, 0 HR, 3 RBI), usually the Rays' DH, will take over in right field.
Desmond Jennings, CFHot4/3/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is a .538 hitter versus Toronto's starter Brandon Morrow with four homers and a 2.186 OPS.
Insight: Jennings is off to a quick start with four hits (three doubles) in his first 10 at-bats. This is a highly favorable matchup.
David DeJesus, LF4/2/2014 6:37:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder David DeJesus (bruised foot) is out of the lineup again Wednesday.
Insight: DeJesus left Monday's season opener with a bruised foot. Logan Forsythe will DH and Sean Rodriguez will start in left field Wednesday. Matt Joyce will take a seat with left-hander Mark Buehrle on the hill.
Desmond Jennings, CFHot4/2/2014 10:46:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is a .500 hitter versus Toronto's starter Mark Buehrle (6-for-12).
Insight: He already has three doubles, two walks, a steal and just one strikeout. Jennings has been a bit of a disappointment the last two seasons, but is off to a quick start this season (.571) and has a favorable matchup on Wednesday.
Desmond Jennings, CFHot4/1/2014 10:54:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings has logged two straight two-hit games to start the season.
Insight: He already has three doubles, two walks, a steal and just one strikeout. Jennings has been a bit of a disappointment the last two seasons, hitting .249 with an average of 14 homers, 50 RBI, 84 runs and 26 steals per season.
David DeJesus, LF4/1/2014 6:02:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder David DeJesus (bruised foot) is not in the lineup Tuesday against Toronto, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: DeJesus could be available as a pinch hitter, however. Matt Joyce will start in left field and lead off, while Logan Forsythe will DH.
Wil Myers, RF3/31/2014 8:18:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI on Opening Day against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Myers hit .293 with 13 home runs, 53 RBI and an .832 OPS to win AL Rookie of the Year last season. Manager Joe Maddon has him in the No. 2 hole to start the season.
David DeJesus, LF3/31/2014 8:01:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder David DeJesus actually hurt his foot during Monday's game but X-rays came back negative, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: He appeared to injure his arm diving back to first on a pick-off attempt, but it turns out he suffered a foot contusion. He's day-to-day.
David DeJesus, LF3/31/2014 7:17:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder David DeJesus left Monday's game against the Blue Jays.
Insight: He appeared to hurt his arm diving back to first on a pick-off attempt, accordingto Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. If he has to miss time, it will lead to more playing time for Logan Forsythe and Sean Rodriguez.
Desmond Jennings, CF3/31/2014 2:07:00 PM
Description: Hitting the knuckleball has never come easy for Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings.
Insight: In 16 at bats versus R.A. Dickey, Jennings has just one hit to show for himself. Jennings (.252, 14 HR, 54 RBI) definitely has sleeper potential, just not against Dickey. Make sure he's on your bench today.
Matt Joyce, RF3/31/2014 1:59:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Matt Joyce has always done lousy against Toronto starter R.A. Dickey.
Insight: In 26 at bats, Joyce has only managed four hits against the the right-hander. Joyce (.235, 18 HR, 47 RBI in 2013) will bat seventh in today's season opener.
Erik Bedard, SP3/28/2014 7:40:00 PM
Description: The Rays have brought back Erik Bedard on a minor league deal.
Insight: Bedard opted out of his deal with the Rays earlier this week after failing to win the fifth spot in the rotation. He'll serve as depth for Tampa Bay should an injury strike.
Wil Myers, RF3/27/2014 7:04:00 AM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers took a pitch off his knee during Tuesday's game but he is expected to start Friday, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Myers hit .293 with 13 home runs, 53 RBI and an .832 OPS to win AL Rookie of the Year last season. The 23-year-old flashed 30-HR power in the minors.
Erik Bedard, SP3/25/2014 7:01:00 PM
Description: The Rays have released left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Bedard was hoping to grab the fifth spot in Tampa's starting rotation but lost out to Jake Odorizzi. The 35-year-old hasn't finished a season with an ERA lower than four since 2011.
Alex Colome, SP3/24/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: Rays promising right-hander Alex Colome has been suspended for 50 days for a PED violation, according to Yahoo writer Jeff Passan.
Insight: Colome threw 16 innings at the major league level last season with a 2.25 ERA and 12 strikeouts, but he'll have to sit for the first two months of 2014. The one thing the Rays have is pitching, so this won't hurt the big club.
Matt Moore, SP3/23/2014 6:30:00 PM
Description: Matt Moore will have X-rays on his jaw and teeth roots on Monday. The Tampa Bay ace was struck in the face by a comebacker Sunday in a spring training game versus the Red Sox. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: It's been a scary spring for pitchers with Aroldis Chapman going down with a facial fracture and now this injury to Moore. The left-hander tied for third in the AL with 17 wins last season. It wouldn't be surprising if Moore topped that number in 2014 but first, he'll have to get healthy.
Matt Moore, SP3/23/2014 4:08:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander Matt Moore was hit in the side of the face by a comebacker on Sunday, but he appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Insight: Moore received stitches for a laceration on his lip but has no concussion symptoms, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He threw four no-hit innings before leaving the game, though he did walk four batters and now has 15 walks in 14 1/3 innings this spring.
Matt Moore, SPCold3/23/2014 2:16:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander Matt Moore has walked 11 batters in 10 1/3 innings this spring.
Insight: He has allowed 13 hits and five earned runs too. Moore saw a decline in velocity of nearly two mph last season and walked 4.55 batters per nine innings. He also missed time with elbow soreness in the second half. Don't pay for the 17-4 record and 3.29 ERA he had in 2013.
Jake Odorizzi, SP3/22/2014 5:17:00 PM
Description: Rays manager Joe Maddon has named Jake Odorizzi the team's fifth starter, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Odorizzi beat out Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos.
Insight: The Rays acquired Odorizzi from the Royals along with Wil Myers in the package for James Shields, and the 23-year-old had a 3.94 ERA in 29 2/3 innings last season. He also had a 3.33 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 124 strikeouts in 124 1/3 innings with Triple-A Durham. He'll try to hold down the fort until Jeremy Hellickson returns from elbow surgery in June. Ramos will pitch in high-leverage situations out of the bullpen, and Bedard will opt out of his contract if he's demoted to the minors.
Wil Myers, RF3/18/2014 6:19:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers (quad) will return to the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: Myers fouled a ball of his right leg on Saturday, but he avoided a serious injury. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year hit 13 homers in 335 at-bats last season and flashed 35-homer power in the minors.
Wil Myers, RF3/16/2014 11:12:00 AM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers is aiming to return Tuesday against Minnesota. He fouled a ball off his quad Saturday in a spring training exhibition with Pittsburgh. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: His X-rays came back negative so it looks like it's just a bruise. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year should be a threat for 20+ homers if he can stay healthy.
Wil Myers, RF3/15/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay outfielder Wil Myers fouled a ball off his right leg in Saturday's game. X-rays were negative, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: A lot is expected of the 23-year-old Myers this season. He batted .293 with 13 HR and 53 RBI after being called up last June.
David Price, SP3/13/2014 2:32:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay left-hander David Price was named the Opening Day starter for the Rays.
Insight: The 2012 AL Cy Young winner is an elite fantasy arm coming off a mediocre season (10-8, 3.33 ERA, 1.098 WHIP), but this certainly isn't a surprise to anyone.
Jeremy Hellickson, SP3/12/2014 1:52:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson is targeting June 1st for his return from elbow surgery. SOURCE: Tampa Bay Times
Insight: The Rays originally expected him back in mid-May but that's not going to happen. Hellickson (12-10, 5.17 ERA) is coming off a rocky season that even included a demotion to Double-A. So far, he's gone undrafted in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.
Ben Zobrist, 2B3/3/2014 6:04:00 PM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist (back) said everything felt "great" after making his Grapefruit League debut Monday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Zobrist will play again Wednesday and should be ready for Opening Day. He carries second base and shortstop eligibility, making him a fantasy favorite.
Ben Zobrist, 2B2/22/2014 11:48:00 AM
Description: Rays 2B/SS/OF Ben Zobrist has been dealing with a sore back after tweaking in during a workout Wednesday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Zobrist turned in a decent year in 2013 with 12 HR, 71 RBI and a .275 average in 157 regular season contests. He also successfully stole 11 out of 14 bases. His position flexibility makes him a fantasy favorite.
Desmond Jennings, CF2/17/2014 9:28:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings arrived to camp having put on 10-15 pounds of muscle, according to tampabay.com. "I get here every spring and I probably lose at least 10 pounds, so I feel I'll be around what I want to play with once the season starts," he said.
Insight: Jennings burst onto the scene with 10 homers and 20 steals in just 63 games in 2011, but he's followed that up with .246-13 HR-31 SB in 2012 and.252-14 HR-20 SB last season while playing less than 140 games in both years. However, the center fielder improved both his K and BB rates last season and increased his slugging percentage. Manager Joe Maddon hasn't decided if he'll stick with Jennings in the leadoff spot or drop him in the order this season.
Erik Bedard, SP2/14/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Left-handed starter Erik Bedard has signed a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay.
Insight: Another team takes a shot at the talented, but never has reached his potential lefty. He hasn't recorded double-digit wins since 2007 and his ERA has been north of 4.50 over the past two seasons.
Jeremy Hellickson, SP2/3/2014 3:03:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson will miss the start of the season after elbow surgery last week, according to Marc Topkins of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Hellickson had a miserable 2013 going 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA. That includes a 7.15 ERA in his final 45 1/3 innings. Expectations are for a mid-to-late May return.
Fernando Rodney, RP2/2/2014 4:07:00 PM
Description: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe believes there's a growing sense that New York will swoop in at the last minute and sign free agent reliever Fernando Rodney.
Insight: A Rodney signing is definitely within the realm of possibilies for a Yankees team that has gotten increasingly sneakier in recent years. Rodney was initially being pursued by the Mets and Orioles but now it looks like he could wind up as New York's setup man on Opening Day. Obviously, moving to the eighth inning would ruin any potential fantasy value that Rodney might have had.
Wilson Betemit, DH2/2/2014 10:39:00 AM
Description: Former Orioles DH Wilson Betemit has signed on with the Rays. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: His minor league contract includes an invite to spring training. Betemit missed most of the 2013 campaign while battling knee injuries. The year before, he hit .261 with 12 HR and 40 RBI in 102 games. He's not going to be an everyday player in Tampa.
Fernando Rodney, RP1/24/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Less than 24 hours ago it looked like Fernando Rodney was about to sign with the Orioles. Now he's talking to the Mets, according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin.
Insight: No deal is imminent. Rodney had one of the greatest seasons by a closer in major league history in 2012 but came back to Earth with an up and down 2013 campaign (3.38 ERA, 37-for-45 in save opportunities). He has an elite changeup and his fastball can still touch the high 90s, though it doesn't always land in the strike zone.
Fernando Rodney, RP1/23/2014 5:38:00 PM
Description: Earlier today we heard from Grantland's Jonah Keri that Fernando Rodney was close to signing with the Orioles. The Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly has since refuted that claim and says the two sides haven't spoken in weeks.
Insight: We're not sure what the holdup is. The Orioles need a closer and Rodney is the best one available now that Grant Balfour (who failed his physical when he went to Baltimore last month) is off the market. Despite Connolly's insistence that the two sides aren't talking, Rodney to the O's makes too much sense not to happen.
Grant Balfour, RP1/23/2014 4:19:00 PM
Description: Closer Grant Balfour has agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal with Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Balfour saved a career-high 38 games for Oakland last season and has posted a sub-2.60 ERA in four straight seasons. The Rays have a solid back end with Balfour, Joel Peralta and Heath Bell.
David Price, SP1/16/2014 2:49:00 PM
Description: David Price and the Rays avoided arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $14 million contract.
Insight: It doesn't mean that he'll still be pitching for the Rays at the end of the season if another team offers the right combination of youngsters. The 2012 AL Cy Young winner is an elite fantasy arm coming off a mediocre season (10-8, 3.33 ERA, 1.098 WHIP).
James Loney, 1B12/13/2013 8:48:00 PM
Description: James Loney is staying with the Rays. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: His new deal will pay him $21 million over the next three seasons. The 29-year-old hit .299 last year with 13 HR and 75 RBI. He's expected to hit third behind Wil Myers and ahead of Evan Longoria.
Ryan Hanigan, C12/3/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: The Rays acquired Ryan Hanigan in a trade Tuesday and then signed him to a three-year, $10.75 million contract. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Hanigan came over as part of the Heath Bell trade. The best the light-hitting Hanigan can hope for is a timeshare behind the plate with Jose Molina.
Heath Bell, RPCold12/3/2013 9:29:00 PM
Description: The D'Backs traded righthander Heath Bell to the Rays on Monday. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: With Fernando Rodney likely to leave in free agency, Bell should take over the closer's role for Tampa Bay. It's always an adventure with Bell but the good news is, he should have plenty of opportunities for saves. He's worth thinking about in the later rounds of this year's fantasy draft.
Kirby Yates, RP11/22/2013 10:16:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay purchased the contract of RP Kirby Yates to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.
Insight: Fantasy owners should keep an eye on this 26-year-old right-hander. Yates totaled 93 strikeouts in 61 2/3 IP at Triple-A with a 1.897 ERA, .989 WHIP and 20 saves.
James Loney, 1B11/16/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: The Rockies are looking for a new first baseman and James Loney appears to be high on their list. SOURCE: Denver Post
Insight: Loney experienced a career resurgence last year with the Rays (.299, 13 HR, 75 RBI in 158 games). In Colorado, he'd be replacing Todd Helton, who recently announced his retirement after 17 seasons.
Fernando Rodney, RP11/12/2013 7:32:00 PM
Description: Cleveland could be in the running for free agent closer Fernando Rodney. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: They've also shown an interest in former Dodgers and Giants reliever Brian Wilson. The Indians parted ways with Chris Perez earlier this month. Rodney still offers a plus-fastball and one of the most deceiving changeups in the game but he's shown a tendency to get rattled and his control can be hit or miss.
David DeJesus, LF11/5/2013 8:41:00 PM
Description: The Rays have brought back outfielder David DeJesus on a two-year contract. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: The deal is worth $10.5 million. Tampa Bay acquired DeJesus from the Nationals in late August. He ended up hitting .260 with two homers and 11 RBI over his final 35 games.
Yunel Escobar, SS11/2/2013 8:50:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar had his option picked up for next season. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Escobar's regular season numbers were average (.256, 9 HR, 56 RBI) but he was dominant against Cleveland and Boston in the playoffs (.421 AVG in 19 at bats). He'll make $5 million in 2014.
Ben Zobrist, 2B11/2/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: The Rays have exercised Ben Zobrist's option for next season. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: His base salary will be $7 million. Zobrist turned in another strong year in 2013 with 12 HR, 71 RBI and a .275 average in 157 regular season contests. He also stole 11 bases.
David Price, SP10/10/2013 3:06:00 PM
Description: David Price acknowledged Wednesday that he has probably played his final game as a Tampa Bay Ray. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: We had heard rumblings about Price possibly getting traded this offseason but now it seems almost certain to happen. Obviously, it will require a team to give up a package of top level prospects, but we're guessing plenty of clubs will be after the 2012 Cy Young winner when the season is over.
Kelly Johnson, LF10/8/2013 5:55:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay's Kelly Johnson is starting at DH in Game 4 of the ALDS versus Boston.
Insight: Johnson didn't start in the first three games. He's hitting eighth Tuesday.
James Loney, 1BHot10/8/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney 10-for-31 (.323) with a pair of home runs against Boston starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Loney is swinging a hot bat in the postseason, batting .625 (5-for-8) with a 1.602 OPS. Start him.
Wil Myers, RFCold10/8/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay rookie Wil Myers exited Monday's ALDS game against Boston with cramping in both legs, but is probable for Game 4 of the ALDS Tuesday against Boston.
Insight: Myers went 0-for-3 with a walk in his four plate appearances. The rookie is 0-for-12 in the series and 1-for-16 in his first postseason experience.
Jose Lobaton, C10/7/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Rays backup catcher Jose Lobaton stole the show with a walkoff home run Monday in a wild win over Boston.
Insight: The homer was Lobaton's first career postseason hit. It was also the first homer allowed by Koji Uehara since June 30th. The Rays had never had a walkoff home run in the playoffs before tonight.
Wil Myers, RFCold10/7/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay rookie Wil Myers exited Monday's ALDS game against Boston with cramping in both legs. SOURCE: Rachel Nichols, TBS
Insight: Matt Joyce will move from DH to right field with Sean Rodriguez entering the game in left. Myers went 0-for-3 with a walk in his four plate appearances. He's 0-for-12 in the series.
David Price, SP10/7/2013 9:03:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter David Price, who went on a Twitter rant over the weekend, could be shopped this winter.
Insight: In fact, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, many big league executives have expressed that they'd be surprised if Price isn't traded. The Rays rarely keep their star players when they reach free agency with Evan Longoria being the most notable exception.
Ben Zobrist, 2B10/7/2013 11:10:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is an ugly .111 hitter (4-for-36) in his career against Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: Zobrist blasted his second career postseason homer Friday in a 12-2 loss, but is 2-for-11 in this year's playoffs. Avoid this matchup.
Evan Longoria, 3B10/7/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is just a .206 hitter versus Boston starter Clay Buchholz with 13 strikeouts in 34 official at-bats.
Insight: Longoria is a career .198 hitter in the postseason and 2-for-8 in three games this postseason without an extra base hit or RBI.
Yunel Escobar, SS10/5/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar has dominated Boston starter John Lackey in 15 lifetime at bats.
Insight: He's hitting .533 versus the Red Sox ace. Escobar is a .279 hitter in 32 career games at Fenway Park.
Desmond Jennings, CF10/5/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings has managed only one hit in 11 previous encounters with John Lackey.
Insight: Jennings was punched out twice in Friday's loss and overall, he's just a .240 career hitter against the Red Sox. Lackey has looked excellent since coming back from Tommy John surgery and he shouldn't have much trouble getting Jennings to swing and miss on Saturday.
Ben Zobrist, 2B10/5/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist is hitting over .400 in his career against Red Sox starter John Lackey.
Insight: Zobrist blasted his second career postseason homer Friday in a 12-2 loss. Including yesterday, the 32-year-old is hitting .231 with five RBI versus Boston this season.
Jeremy Hellickson, SP10/4/2013 9:24:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson will start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Red Sox.
Insight: Hellickson had a miserable season, going 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA. That includes a 7.15 ERA in his final 45 1/3 innings. However, he did have a 3.44 ERA in 18 1/3 innings against the Red Sox.
Ben Zobrist, 2B10/4/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist has a tough matchup against Boston left-hander Jon Lester.
Insight: Zobrist is just 9-for-48 (.188) lifetime against Lester with 18 strikeouts. It was a down year for Zobrist in most categories, but he's still a viable fantasy asset because he fills up the box score ... just not against Lester.
Evan Longoria, 3B10/4/2013 10:11:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is just a .220 hitter versus Boston starter Jon Lester with 18 strikeouts in 50 official at-bats.
Insight: He does have three homers against Lester, but it's still an unfavorable matchup.
Desmond Jennings, CF10/4/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is a career .360 hitter with a 1.025 OPS against Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester.
Insight: He's also stolen two bases without getting caught, though his hamstring isn't 100 percent and he likely won't try to run much in this series.
Matt Moore, SP10/3/2013 12:33:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore will draw the start Friday in Game 1 of the Division Series.
Insight: David Price will get the nod in Game 2. Moore went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his two starts against the Red Sox this season.
Alex Cobb, SP10/3/2013 9:35:00 AM
Description: Alex Cobb guided the Rays to victory Wednesday with a dominating performance against the Indians.
Insight: Cobb wasn't fooling many hitters (he allowed eight hits) but he kept the Indians off the scoreboard and that's all that matters. The Rays haven't set their rotation yet for the Division Series but we're guessing Cobb will pitch in one of Tampa Bay's two home games (Games 3 and 4).
Desmond Jennings, CF10/2/2013 6:23:00 PM
Description: Desmond Jennings is back in center field for Wednesday's Wild Card game versus Cleveland.
Insight: Jennings (hamstring) isn't close to 100 percent but in a win or go home situation, the Rays need their leadoff man in the lineup. The 26-year-old has never faced Indians righthander Danny Salazar (2-3, 3.12 ERA).
Desmond Jennings, CF10/1/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings (hamstring) is expected to play Wednesday night in the Wild Card Game against the Cleveland Indians. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Jennings started in Game 163 against the Rangers and went 1-for-3 with a walk after missing eight straight days. The outfielder was put in position to test the hamstring immediately, as he tried to stretch a broken-bat hit down the left-field line into a double on the first pitch of the game but was thrown out by Craig Gentry.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/30/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: In a surprise move, injured Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is starting in center field Monday in a tiebreaker game against Texas.
Insight: He's leading off. Jennings (.252, 14 HR, 54 RBI) has been bothered by a sore hamstring for the better part of a week but with Tampa Bay's season on the line, he isn't holding anything back. ESPN's Pedro Gomez said David DeJesus would move to center field if Jennings is in too much pain to finish the game.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/30/2013 9:36:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings is likely reduced to being a pinch hitter in Monday's tiebreaker game as his hamstring injury is still preventing him from playing in the outfield, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.
Insight: Jennings (.252, 14 HR, 54 RBI, 81 runs, 20 SB) might have a chance to play Wednesday, should the Rays advance that far.
Jesse Crain, RP9/30/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Rays reliever Jesse Crain continues to struggle with a sore shoulder and wasn't available on Sunday.
Insight: It would be nice to have Crain's arm in the bullpen, what with his 0.74 ERA and 1.145 WHIP, but it doesn't appear that it will happen.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/29/2013 1:18:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings is still out with a bum hamstring.
Insight: Jennings (.252, 14 HR, 54 RBI, 20 SB) could be available to pinch-hit like he was last night but it doesn't look like he's ready to resume playing the outfield. His health is a big question mark heading into the postseason, assuming the Rays even qualify for it.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/27/2013 9:33:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings had to leave Sunday's game against Baltimore because of a hamstring injury and has one pinch hit at bat since then.
Insight: We're still waiting for the guy who was supposed to be the "next" Carl Crawford. So far this season he's batting .252 with 14 HR, 54 RBI, 81 runs and 20 SB.
Alex Cobb, SPHot9/26/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay righthander Alex Cobb (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 Ks) was excellent Thursday in a win over the Yankees.
Insight: Cobb hasn't missed a beat since his return from a concussion (5-1, 2.41 ERA in his last nine starts). The Rays would be crazy not to start him in the postseason, assuming they are able to advance past the Wild Card round.
Yunel Escobar, SS9/26/2013 7:18:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar was a late scratch Thursday against New York.
Insight: It's Escobar's second absence in a row. His ankle injury is said to be minor, which means he should be available for the team's weekend series against Toronto.
Ben Zobrist, 2BCold9/26/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist has a tough matchup against Yankees starter Ivan Nova Thursday.
Insight: Zobrist is just 3-for-26 (.115) lifetime against Nova. He's also hitting .210 (13-for-62) with a .516 OPS over his last 15 games. Sit him.
Evan Longoria, 3B9/25/2013 10:38:00 PM
Description: Evan Longoria powered the Rays with two homers Wednesday in a win against New York.
Insight: That gives Longoria his third career 30 home run season. By winning, the Rays were able to eliminate the Yankees from the postseason hunt. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's magic number for clinching the AL Wild Card is three.
Ben Zobrist, 2B9/25/2013 11:11:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist is hitless in 14 at-bats against Yankees hurler Phil Hughes.
Insight: Zobrist is batting .271 this season with 11 HR, 70 RBI, 74 runs and 11 SB. The OPS is down to .751, but he's still a useful option. Avoid this matchup.
Matt Joyce, RF9/25/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Matt Joyce is 6-for-14 (.429) with a pair of homers and a 1.671 OPS against Yankees starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: Joyce has been missing in action in September, batting a miniscule .091 in 17 games, but this is a favorable matchup.
James Loney, 1B9/24/2013 1:20:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney is hitless in nine at-bats versus Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Loney, who didn't start Monday, but won the game with a pinch-hit homer, has put together a solid season batting .296 with 13 HR and 71 RBI. However, this is an unfavorable matchup.
Ben Zobrist, 2B9/24/2013 12:05:00 PM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist is 5-for-10 with five extra base hits and a 2.083 OPS against starter Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Zobrist is batting .271 this season with 11 HR, 70 RBI, 74 runs and 11 SB. The OPS is down, but he's still a useful option.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/24/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings had to leave Sunday's game against Baltimore because of a leg injury and did not play in Monday's contest either.
Insight: Jennings suffered a mild hamstring injury and is listed as day-to-day. We're still waiting for the guy who was supposed to be the "next" Carl Crawford. So far he's batting .251 with 14 HR, 54 RBI, 81 runs and 20 SB.
Jesse Crain, RP9/23/2013 9:18:00 PM
Description: As expected, the Rays activated reliever Jesse Crain from the disabled list on Monday.
Insight: He wasn't asked to pitch in Monday's game against the Orioles. Certainly the Rays would like to see him pitch a couple times before deciding on their postseason roster. Of course, they still have to make the postseason first (their magic number is five).
Evan Longoria, 3B9/23/2013 2:12:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against Baltimore due to flu-like symptoms.
Insight: Longoria is batting .263 with 29 HR and 77 RBI this season. He should be back in there on Tuesday.
James Loney, 1B9/23/2013 2:11:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney is not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: It's just a planned rest day, no injury that we are aware of. Loney has put together a solid season batting .294 with 12 HR and 70 RBI.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/23/2013 2:06:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings had to leave Sunday's game against Baltimore because of a leg injury and is not in Monday's starting lineup.
Insight: Jennings suffered a mild hamstring injury and is listed as day-to-day. We're still waiting for the guy who was supposed to be the "next" Carl Crawford. So far he's batting .251 with 14 HR, 54 RBI, 81 runs and 20 SB.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/22/2013 3:56:00 PM
Description: Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings had to leave Sunday's game against Baltimore because of a leg injury. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: Jennings went 2-for-3 with a double before exiting. Sam Fuld (.196, 2 HR, 17 RBI) has taken his place in center field.
Enny Romero, SP9/22/2013 1:44:00 PM
Description: Enny Romero is making his major league debut Sunday against Baltimore.
Insight: The Rays lefthander is starting in place of Jeremy Hellickson, who was scratched after pitching in Friday's 18-inning win. In 28 minor league starts this season, Romero is 11-7 with a 2.61 ERA.
Evan Longoria, 3BCold9/22/2013 1:16:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to flu-like symptoms, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Longoria is hitting .204 with one home run over his last 26 games and .219 with 12 homers over his last 76. At age 27, we're still waiting for the monster breakout from Longoria. His career highs for a season are 33 homers, 113 RBI, a .294 average and an .896 OPS.
Jesse Crain, RP9/22/2013 12:55:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay righthander Jesse Crain expects to come off the disabled list Monday against the Orioles. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Shoulder issues have kept him off the field for almost three months. Crain has actually never pitched for the Rays as he was acquired from the White Sox at this year's trade deadline.
David DeJesus, LF9/22/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Rays starter David DeJesus is 6-for-11 (.545) with one homer and six walks against former teammate Scott Feldman of the Orioles.
Insight: DeJesus and Feldman played together with the Cubs this season before ending up with different AL East teams. The veteran outfielder is hitting .267 in 27 games since joining Tampa Bay and is not a good fantasy option most days but he has a good matchup Sunday.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/21/2013 4:35:00 PM
Description: Desmond Jennings stroked his 14th home run of the season Saturday in a win against Baltimore.
Insight: The Rays center fielder produced a season-high four RBI in the contest. Jennings (.249, 14 HR, 54 RBI, 20 SB) sat on the bench for the first nine innings yesterday because of a stiff neck but clearly it was never a serious issue.
Alex Cobb, SP9/21/2013 4:30:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb held the Orioles to just one run in 8 1/3 innings Saturday at Tropicana Field.
Insight: He might have gotten the shutout if not for a Chris Davis bloop triple that left fielder David DeJesus lost in the lights. Tampa Bay's magic number to clinch the American League Wild Card is eight games.
Roberto Hernandez, SP9/21/2013 12:15:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay righthander Roberto Hernandez is expected to start Sunday against Baltimore. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: That was originally Jeremy Hellickson's day to pitch but the Rays were forced to use him out of the pen Friday in an 18-inning win over Baltimore. Hernandez hasn't made a start in almost a month (August 27th against Los Angeles).
Ben Zobrist, 2B9/21/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist could have a tough afternoon Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: That's because Miguel Gonzalez will be on the mound for Baltimore. Despite poor numbers against Gonzalez (just 2-for-16), Zobrist is batting third and starting at second base.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/21/2013 11:33:00 AM
Description: Desmond Jennings has returned to Tampa Bay's starting lineup. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Jennings was scratched with a neck injury Friday night but ended up logging four at bats after coming in as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. He's just a .188 lifetime hitter against Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez.
Jeremy Hellickson, SP9/21/2013 9:55:00 AM
Description: Making just his seventh major league appearance out of the bullpen, Tampa Bay righthander Jeremy Hellickson pitched 2 1/3 innings for the win Friday in an 18-inning win over Baltimore.
Insight: It puts the Rays in a bit of a bind because Hellickson was supposed to start Sunday's game. Now they'll likely to turn to Jake Odorizzi, who went 9-6 with a 3.33 ERA this season in 22 starts for Triple-A Durham.
David DeJesus, LF9/21/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder David DeJesus notched four hits in Friday's marathon win over Baltimore.
Insight: The game set numerous major league records including the number of pitchers and players used. Since acquiring him from the Nationals in mid-August, DeJesus has hit .278 for the Rays with five RBI.
Desmond Jennings, CF9/20/2013 7:52:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings was scratched from the lineup Friday due to neck stiffness, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Jennings is day-to-day, the Rays announced. The Rays outfielder has hit just .177 (26-for-147) with two home runs, five steals, 13 runs and a .552 OPS since July 21.
Wil Myers, RF9/19/2013 4:35:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers is not in the lineup Thursday against Yu Darvish and the Rangers, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Maddon is going lefty-heavy against the Rangers ace, but it's odd to see Myers on the bench. He's hitting .297 with 10 home runs in 202 at-bats against righties this season.
Jesse Crain, RP9/18/2013 6:31:00 PM
Description: The Rays were hoping to bring Jesse Crain off the DL on Wednesday but instead they'll have to wait a few more days. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Crain (2-3, 0.74 ERA), who was traded from the White Sox before the trade deadline, hasn't pitched since June because of a shoulder injury. When he does return, he should be a valuable arm out of the pen.
Evan Longoria, 3B9/18/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is a career .375 hitter with three home runs and a 1.345 OPS versus Texas left-hander Derek Holland.
Insight: Longoria's numbers are down in the second half, but he's still a productive third baseman with an .800 OPS. He's also in a favorable matchup which makes him a valuable asset on Wednesday.
Jeremy Hellickson, SPCold9/17/2013 10:26:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson surrendered five runs over 2 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Rangers.
Insight: Hellickson was decent in his first two starts since returning from the minors, but Tuesday's outing shows why fantasy owners cannot trust him at this point. He is 1-6 with a 7.75 ERA over his last nine starts.
Alex Cobb, SP9/16/2013 10:36:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay righthander Alex Cobb (8 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 10 K's, 1 BB) was excellent Monday in a win over Texas.
Insight: The win gives Tampa a one-game cushion in the AL Wild Card race. Cobb is 3-1 with a 3.05 ERA since making his return from the disabled list in mid-August.
Wil Myers, RF9/15/2013 6:31:00 PM

Ben Zobrist, 2B9/14/2013 3:48:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist is not in Saturday's starting lineup versus Minnesota.
Insight: Zobrist is not having the year expected of him with most of his totals falling from a solid 2012. He's batting .217 in September and the day off might do him some good.
Kelly Johnson, LF9/13/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Kelly Johnson is a career .360 with five homers and a 1.429 OPS versus Minnesota right-hander Kevin Correia.
Insight: Johnson is a part-time player with the Rays, but has posted 16 HR and 51 RBI in 340 at-bats.
Jose Molina, C9/12/2013 5:51:00 PM
Description: Rays catcher Jose Molina is expected to rejoin the team Friday against Minnesota. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: Molina (.242, 2 HR, 17 RBI) has been attending to a family matter. If you're going to own one of the Molina brothers in fantasy, Yadier is the far better choice (.318, 11 HR, 65 RBI in 120 games) .
James Loney, 1B9/12/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney owns a .321 lifetime average against Boston's Jake Peavy.
Insight: Loney was a member of the Dodgers for most of his career so he faced Peavy often when the right-hander was on the Padres. He's 9-for-28 with four doubles and two home runs against Peavy. After batting .247 with a .566 OPS in August, Loney has gone 12-for-36 (.333) with two home runs and five walks in 10 games this month.
James Loney, 1BCold9/11/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney is 2-for-21 (.095) with an ugly .186 OPS versus Boston starter Ryan Dempster.
Insight: His impressive early season start has turned sour after the All-Star break as his OPS was .832 before the break and .699 after. He's still hitting for a decent average, however.
Kelly Johnson, LF9/11/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Kelly Johnson shouldn't be in the lineup on Wednesday as he's just 1-for-14 versus Boston starter Ryan Dempster with eight strikeouts.
Insight: Johnson is a part-time player with the Rays, but has posted 16 HR and 51 RBI in 338 at-bats. Avoid him on Wednesday.
Ben Zobrist, 2B9/10/2013 11:34:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist is an ugly 4-for-34 (.118) with a .397 OPS against Boston starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: Zobrist is not having the year expected of him with most of his totals falling from a solid 2012. At the top of the list is an OPS which is currently running 72 points below last season and 11 homers vs. 20 a season ago. This is an extremely unfavorable matchup.
Matt Moore, SP9/4/2013 9:44:00 AM
Description: Rays All-Star lefthander Matt Moore earned his 15th win of the season Tuesday in his return from the disabled list.
Insight: Moore had a little trouble finding the strike zone at first (four walks) but he settled in eventually. In 5 1/3 innings, Moore allowed four hits and one unearned run. The 94 pitches he threw were a little under his season average (98.4) but that was to be expected in his first outing in over a month. Look for Moore (15-3, 3.27 ERA) to be a solid fantasy contributor down the stretch.
Jeremy Hellickson, SPCold9/3/2013 6:10:00 PM
Description: Jeremy Hellickson will start for the Rays Wednesday against the Angels.
Insight: Hellickson was demoted to the minors after going 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.12 WHIP in 25 innings over his last six starts.
Matt Moore, SP9/1/2013 7:58:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefthander Matt Moore will come off the disabled list to start Tuesday's game against the Angels. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: A sore elbow sidelined Moore (14-3, 3.41 ERA) for a little over a month. It looks like Roberto Hernandez (6-13, 4.95) is going to be the odd man out in the Rays' rotation.
Delmon Young, LF9/1/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: With the rosters expanding from 25 to 40 on Sunday, the Rays decided to call up outfielder/DH Delmon Young from Double-A Montgomery.
Insight: Young hit .233 with a homer and three RBI during his seven-game stay in Montgomery. Tampa Bay's outfield is pretty crowded at the moment so the bulk of Young's at bats will come as a DH.
Luke Scott, DH8/31/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay designated hitter Luke Scott (back) will come off the disabled list Sunday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Scott, who hasn't played since Aug. 14 due to back spasms, said his evaluation went well Saturday. He's hitting .249 with a .766 OPS and nine homers in 274 plate appearances this season.
Wil Myers, RF8/30/2013 8:04:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Wil Myers is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Athletics.

Ben Zobrist, 2B8/29/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist will go into Thursday's game against the Angels with a .368 lifetime average against Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas.
Insight: Zobrist is 7-for-19 with three doubles against Vargas and is also hitting .344 with a .963 OPS over his last eight games. Thursday could be a nice day for the utilityman.

Description: Rays starter Chris Archer has thrown three straight starts of seven innings after giving up five earned runs in five innings on Aug. 13 against Seattle.
Insight: He allowed one earned runs on five hits, struck out five and walked none over seven innings Wednesday in a win over the Angels and is 8-5 with a 2.81 ERA this season. Walks were the main concern for Archer in the minors, but he has walked 2.81 batters per nine innings over 102 1/3 innings this season.

Description: The Rays have demoted Jeremy Hellickson to High-A Charlotte.

David DeJesus, CF8/27/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: Rays newly-acquired David DeJesus is just 2-for-17 (.118) against Angels starter C.J. Wilson.

Matt Moore, SP8/26/2013 2:15:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander Matt Moore is expected to return to the mound on Sept. 3 according to manager Joe Maddon.
Insight: Moore was initially expected to return last weekend, but he felt discomfort in his elbow when throwing his changeup during a bullpen session last week. When last we left the third-year starter he was in the middle of a very good season: 14-3, 3.41 ERA, 1.228 WHIP and 115 Ks in 121.1 IP.
Matt Joyce, RFHot8/26/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Rays right fielder Matt Joyce is 11-for-30 (.367) with a pair of homers against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Joyce is 7-for-18 (.389) over his last six games and should be started in this favorable matchup.
Ben Zobrist, 2B8/25/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist is 3-for-24 (.125) in his career against Yankees starter Ivan Nova, who will be on the hill Sunday.

Matt Joyce, RF8/25/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Rays right fielder Matt Joyce has three homers over his last seven games after failing to hit one for 45 straight games (29 starts) going back to June 16. He's also batting .368 (14-for-38) over his last 14 games. That still doesn't mean you should start him Sunday against Ivan Nova, however.
Insight: Joyce is 3-for-23 (.130) lifetime against the Yankees starter, with eight strikeouts.
Desmond Jennings, CF8/25/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is only 2-for-17 (.118) since returning from the disabled list, but he walked five times in that span and has a good matchup Sunday versus New York.
Insight: Against Sunday's starter Ivan Nova, Jennings has gone 6-for-19 (.316) with two extra-base hits. He could have a nice day Sunday.
Jose Molina, C8/24/2013 12:01:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina is hitless in 16 at-bats versus Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia and likely won't get the Saturday start.
Insight: Molina isn't much of an offensive threat to begin with (.241, .612 OPS) so his lack of success against Sabathia shouldn't change many lineups. Backup Jose Lobaton homered on Friday night and has a better chance against the big lefty.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot8/24/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria "owns" Yankees starter CC Sabathia in their 62 previous encounters.
Insight: Longoria is 19-for-50 (.380) with five doubles, six homers, 12 RBI and 12 walks against Sabathia, so he clearly sees the ball well coming out of the big lefty's hand. Longoria has homers in three of his last five games to warm up for this extremely favorable matchup.
Chris Archer, SP8/23/2013 10:24:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay righthander Chris Archer beat the Yankees for the third time on Friday.
Insight: By doing so, he became the first rookie to defeat New York three times in a season since Kevin Brown in 1989. The victory was Archer's first since July 27th. That win also came against the Yankees.
David DeJesus, CF8/23/2013 8:05:00 PM
Description: The Rays acquired David DeJesus from the Nationals Friday for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Insight: DeJesus' tenure in Washington lasted all of four days. Matt Joyce, Desmond Jennings and Wil Myers are Tampa's starting outfielders so DeJesus will only be playing on a part-time basis.
Wil Myers, RF8/23/2013 7:29:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers wasn't in Friday's starting lineup.
Insight: Myers has cooled off a bit since his torrid July (.270 AVG in 63 August at bats) but he's still hitting a nifty .312 for the year. He should be back for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Ben Zobrist, 2BHot8/23/2013 12:02:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist has four extra base hits in seven at-bats versus Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda. He's also walked twice for a .667 OBP.
Insight: Zobrist has been better since the All-Star break, batting .316 with an .860 OPS. Combined with this favorable matchup makes him a must start.
Delmon Young, LF8/22/2013 2:13:00 PM
Description: The Rays have signed Delmon Young to a minor league contract and assigned him to Double-A Montgomery.
Insight: The Phillies released Young after he hit .261 with eight homers and a .699 OPS in 272 at-bats, and now he'll return to the organization that drafted him first overall in 2003. He hasn't had fantasy value since 2010.
Jeremy Hellickson, SPCold8/21/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson failed to make it out of the fifth inning Wednesday against the Orioles.
Insight: He's failed to do that four times in his last five starts and is 0-4 with an 8.06 ERA and a 2.10 WHIP in that span. After two strong seasons, it just isn't happening for Hellickson this year.
Matt Moore, SP8/21/2013 5:34:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander Matt Moore threw 69 pitches during a bullpen session Wednesday and had no issues, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Moore will throw a simulated game Saturday.

Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist is hitless in 13 official at-bats against Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez.
Insight: Zobrist is in the middle of a 10-for-46 (.217) slump and this unfavorable matchup isn't likely to help. Avoid.
Desmond Jennings, CF8/19/2013 7:22:00 PM
Description: The Rays have activated center fielder Desmond Jennings from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Jennings (.257, 11 HR, 40 RBI) missed the minimum 15 days with a broken finger. He's hitting leadoff tonight against Baltimore.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot8/19/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is 9-for-21 (.429) with three homers and a 1.452 OPS against Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman.
Insight: Longoria has been on fire the past six games, batting .409. Add in a favorable matchup and he's a must start on Monday. We liked Longoria more in his early years when he stole a few bases, but he should end the season with 30 plus homers and close to 90 RBI.
Chris Archer, SP8/18/2013 6:37:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer had his best outing of the month Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Things seem to be looking up, however -- he has gone 8-for-18 with four doubles and two homers over his last five games after going 23-for-130 (.177) with just two multi-hit games from July 3 to Aug. 13.
Luke Scott, DHCold8/17/2013 4:03:00 PM

Luke Scott, DH8/16/2013 5:32:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is dealing with back spasms, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Scott is a pitiful 4-for-36 (.111) with zero extra-base hits and 10 strikeouts over his last 15 games, and his sore back probably has something to do with it.

Insight: Phew. Moore felt soreness in his left elbow during his last start, in which he allowed five runs in five innings at New York, and he was placed on the disabled list Wednesday. He's 14-3 with a 3.41 ERA this season. The lefty said he's not worried about the injury.
Matt Moore, SP7/31/2013 3:56:00 PM
Description: According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, Rays lefty Matt Moore has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow soreness.
Insight: Moore felt soreness in his left elbow during his last start, in which he allowed five runs in five innings at New York. He's 14-3 with a 3.41 ERA this season, so an extended absence would be bad news for fantasy owners.
Roberto Hernandez, SP7/30/2013 10:49:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Roberto Hernandez threw his first complete game since 2010 Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Hernandez (4.71 ERA) allowed five hits and two earned runs to improve to 6-11. The right-hander came in having given up exactly three earned runs in five straight starts.
Alex Cobb, SP7/30/2013 6:10:00 PM
Description: According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion, blister) said his simulated game went well Tuesday.
Insight: Cobb, who hasn't pitched since taking a liner off his head on June 15, exited his first rehab start last week with a blister on his right index finger. He said the blister is healing and expects to pitch Saturday for Class-A Charlotte.
James Loney, 1BHot7/30/2013 10:58:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney is 6-for-13 (.462) with a home run and a 1.423 OPS against Arizona starter Ian Kennedy.
Insight: The new daddy is batting .344 in the eight games since returning from paternity leave. Add in the favorable matchup and Loney is a must start.
David Price, SPHot7/29/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price had another dominant performance Monday at Boston, allowing just two hits and walking none over 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball.
Insight: Price threw just 90 pitches and likely would have thrown his fourth complete game in his last five starts if not for a rain delay in the middle of the seventh inning. Rays manager Joe Maddon brought Price out after the delay but he wasn't as sharp and was removed after facing one batter. The lefty has won five of six starts since coming off the DL.
Alex Cobb, SP7/29/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion, blister) will throw a simulated game Tuesday.
Insight: Cobb, who hasn't pitched since taking a liner off his head on June 15, exited his first rehab start last week with a blister on his right index finger. He could make a rehab start Saturday if he gets through Tuesday's sim game without an issue.
Wil Myers, RFHot7/28/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers slugged a pair of homers and drove in four runs Sunday at New York.
Insight: Myers is smoking hot right now -- he's batting .469 with four home runs and 13 RBI over his last 12 games -- after starting July in a 5-for-31 slump.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/28/2013 12:12:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist has never gotten a hit against Yankees starter Phil Hughes. That's probably why he's not in the lineup today.
Insight: He's 0-for-14 lifetime versus Hughes. With Zobrist (.268, 7 HR, 49 RBI) getting the day off, Kelly Johnson will make the start at second base.
Luke Scott, DH7/28/2013 12:08:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott has dominated Yankees starter Phil Hughes in 16 previous at bats.
Insight: Scott is batting .500 against him with three extra base hits. The .271 average Scott is hitting for this season is a 42-point improvement from what he hit during the 2012 campaign (.229).
Chris Archer, SPHot7/27/2013 4:01:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer created a masterpiece Saturday against the Yankees, firing a two-hit shutout with zero walks and six strikeouts.
Insight: Archer has tossed two shutouts in his last three starts and is 5-0 with a 1.31 ERA over his last seven starts. It could come down to Archer and teammate Wil Myers for AL Rookie of the Year.
Matt Joyce, RF7/27/2013 9:24:00 AM
Description: Rays right fielder Matt Joyce hasn't had success against Ivan Nova of the Yankees in their previous meetings.
Insight: Joyce is 3-for-21 (.143) against Nova, who will start Saturday. The outfielder is batting .240 with 14 homers, 33 RBI and a .756 OPS this season and has hit .222 with a .558 OPS in July.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/27/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Rays utilityman Ben Zobrist is just 3-for-21 (.143) in his career against Yankees starter Ivan Nova.
Insight: It's a second straight poor matchup for Zobrist, who went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk Friday with CC Sabathia on the mound. He's hitting .268 with seven homers and a .747 OPS this year.
Yunel Escobar, SS7/26/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Rays SS Yunel Escobar owns a .914 OPS in his career against CC Sabathia of the Yankees.
Insight: Escobar is 9-for-31 (.290) with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI against Sabathia. He's hitting just .185 (5-for-27) over his last nine games, but he's not a bad play Friday against New York.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/26/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Rays utilityman Ben Zobrist has taken 68 at-bats against New York lefty CC Sabathia and managed just 15 hits for a .221 average.
Insight: Zobrist has whiffed 21 times against Sabathia. He's hitting .269 with seven home runs and a .745 OPS this season.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/26/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has crushed Yankees starter CC Sabathia in their previous encounters.
Insight: Longoria is 18-for-47 (.383) with four doubles, six homers, 10 RBI and 12 walks against Sabathia, so he clearly sees the ball well coming out of the big lefty's hand.
Desmond Jennings, LF7/25/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder Desmond Jennings is just 1-for-11 versus Boston starter John Lackey with five strikeouts.
Insight: Jennings is batting a much-improved .304 over the past four weeks and 22 games to bring his totals to a more respectable .268 with 11 HR, 40 RBI, 66 runs and 16 stolen bases. One sore point is he leads the league in caught stealing.
Yunel Escobar, SS7/25/2013 10:33:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar is a career .533 hitter (8-for-15) versus Boston veteran right-hander John Lackey.
Insight: Escobar missed a couple of days with a hamstring injury and is just 1-for-10 since returning to the lineup. He is batting .246 this season with 7 HR and 39 RBI.
David Price, SPHot7/24/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: David Price pulled the Rays within a half game of first place in the AL East with a dominant outing Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Price was spectacular, allowing just one run (a solo homer to Mike Napoli) in nine innings. Incredibly, he kept his pitch count under 100 for the night (97 pitches). Three out of Price's last four starts have been complete games. After a slow start to the year, he's pitching like a Cy Young winner again.
Matt Joyce, RF7/24/2013 6:25:00 PM
Description: Rays right fielder Matt Joyce is taking a breather Wednesday night against Boston.
Insight: It makes sense since Joyce is only hitting .182 against lefties this year and Felix Doubront will be pitching for the Red Sox. Rookie Wil Myers is starting in his place.
Kelly Johnson, LF7/24/2013 6:21:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Kelly Johnson won't be in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: He wasn't in Tuesday's lineup either. Sean Rodriguez is getting the start in left field.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/23/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria homered Tuesday for the third time in his last five games.
Insight: Longoria went 1-for-4 against Boston and still hasn't had a multi-hit game since July 2, but he's showing signs of snapping out of a brutal slump.
Wil Myers, RF7/23/2013 10:27:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers slugged his fifth homer of the year Tuesday at Boston.
Insight: Myers missed the previous two games due to a sore left wrist. He has fanned 31 times with just six walks in his first 117 at-bats this season, but he's hitting .316 with 10 extra-base hits, 19 RBI and 18 runs.
Alex Cobb, SP7/23/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) left his rehab start Tuesday due to a blister on his right middle finger.
Insight: Cobb hasn't pitched since taking a liner off his head on June 15. This likely pushes back his timetable another week.
Wil Myers, RF7/23/2013 3:48:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers missed Monday's series opener against the Red Sox, but should be ready to go on Tuesday. Latest update - Myers is in Tuesday's starting lineup, according to Marc Topkins of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: He's still dealing with a wrist issue. Myers has been an under-the-radar rookie while Yasiel Puig has gotten all the press, but he's batting .310 with four homers, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored in 28 games.
Luke Scott, DH7/23/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott is hitless in 11 at-bats versus Boston ace Jon lester.
Insight: Scott, who is one of the streakiest hitters in the league, just had a 13-game hitting streak snapped on Monday night and this poor matchup isn't likely to get him started on a new one. Avoid.
Kelly Johnson, 2B7/23/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Rays infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson is hitless in 12 tries against Boston hurler Jon Lester with three strikeouts.
Insight: Before last night's collar, Johnson had posted eight hits in his previous 12 at-bats with a pair of homers. He's putting together a solid season with 15 HR and 45 RBI in 80 games, but Tuesday's matchup should be avoided.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/23/2013 11:11:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility man Ben Zobrist does a lot of good things for the rays, but hitting Boston starter Jon Lester isn't one of them.
Insight: Zobrist is a career .200 hitter and .605 OPS with almost twice as many strikeouts (17) than hits (nine) in 45 at-bats.
Matt Joyce, RF7/23/2013 11:09:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay outfielder Matt Joyce is 4-for-8 against Boston left-hander Jon Lester with a pair of home runs, six RBI and a 1.806 OPS
Insight: Considering that the Rays' outfielder is normally not even in the lineup against most lefties due to a career .200 batting average, this figures to be a statistical oddity.
Wil Myers, RF7/23/2013 10:51:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers missed Monday's series opener against the Red Sox, but should be ready to go on Tuesday.
Insight: He's still dealing with a wrist issue. Myers has been the under-the-radar rookie while Yasiel Puig has gotten all the press, but he's batting .310 with four homers, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored in 28 games.
Matt Moore, SPHot7/22/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Rays ace Matt Moore tossed his first career shutout Monday in a win over the Red Sox.
Insight: Moore made one of the AL's best offenses look like a Little League team. Sure, the Sox were probably a little gassed from Sunday's five-hour thriller against the Yankees but it was still an incredibly impressive performance. Moore is now 6-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last six starts.
Carlos Pena, 1B7/22/2013 6:55:00 PM
Description: Houston first baseman Carlos Pena has been designated for assignment.
Insight: You know you're having a bad year when the Astros have to cut you loose. Pena has been a strikeout machine this season, whiffing 89 times in 277 at bats.
James Loney, 1B7/22/2013 6:25:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney has returned from his paternity leave.
Insight: Loney (.314, 9 HR, 43 RBI) missed the team's weekend series against the Blue Jays. He'll hit cleanup Monday night against the Red Sox.
Yunel Escobar, SS7/22/2013 6:23:00 PM
Description: Yunel Escobar is back after missing three games with a hamstring injury.
Insight: He'll bat ninth and play shortstop tonight against the Red Sox. Escobar is hitting .251 this season with 7 HR and 39 RBI.
Wil Myers, RF7/22/2013 6:18:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers will miss Monday's series opener against the Red Sox.
Insight: He's still dealing with a wrist issue. Yunel Escobar and James Loney are both back tonight, so it's not a total loss for the Rays. Kelly Johnson will get the start in right.
Wil Myers, RF7/22/2013 12:40:00 PM
Description: A left wrist injury kept Wil Myers out of the starting lineup Sunday against Toronto, but he is probable for Monday's game against Boston.
Insight: Rays manager Joe Maddon said he expects Myers to be ready for Monday's series opener against the Red Sox. So far, the rookie has lived up to the hype, batting .310 with 18 RBI in his first 28 games.
Luke Scott, DHHot7/21/2013 5:50:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott was 0-for-12 against Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey when he went deep off the knuckleballer in the sixth inning Sunday.
Insight: Scott, who is one of the streakiest hitters in the league, is batting .356 with 10 doubles, a triple, six homers, 18 RBI and nine walks over his last 27 games. He's so locked in at the plate that not even Dickey's knuckler could shut him down Sunday.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/21/2013 5:48:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria has gone 4-for-14 with a double, two homers, four RBI and four walks over his last four games.
Insight: Longoria is slowly coming out of a 7-for-56 (.125) slump during which he had just one extra-base hit and 18 strikeouts.
Chris Archer, SPHot7/21/2013 5:37:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer won his third straight start and fourth straight decision Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Archer struggled in his first four starts this season, going 1-3 with a 5.03 ERA and a 6.40 BB/9, but he's 4-0 with a 1.62 ERA and a 2.54 BB/9 over his last six. It looks like Tampa Bay has developed another impact pitching prospect.
Wil Myers, RFHot7/21/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: A wrist injury will keep Wil Myers out of the starting lineup Sunday against Toronto. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Rays manager Joe Maddon said he expects Myers to be ready for Monday's series opener against the Red Sox. So far, the rookie has lived up to the hype, batting .310 with 18 RBI in his first 28 games.
Luke Scott, DH7/21/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: Apparently Luke Scott can't hit the knuckleball. The Tampa Bay DH has never gotten a hit off of R.A. Dickey (0-for-10).
Insight: Noticing a theme here? The Rays have been a trainwreck whenever they've had to face Dickey (.196 AVG in 10 games). Expect more of the same on Sunday.
Desmond Jennings, LFHot7/21/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay left fielder Desmond Jennings has been raking lately but that could change Sunday with R.A. Dickey getting the ball for Toronto.
Insight: Jennings enters Sunday with a .365 average for the month of July, though he's only managed one hit in 13 previous at bats versus Dickey. History tends to repeat itself, which is why we'd recommend using a different outfielder on Sunday, if at all possible.
Matt Joyce, RF7/21/2013 11:34:00 AM
Description: Having to face R.A. Dickey isn't exactly Matt Joyce's idea of a good time.
Insight: The Rays right fielder owns a .125 lifetime average against Dickey, which is incovenient because that's who he'll be facing Sunday in the series finale. Fantasy owners should plan accordingly.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/21/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist is no fan of R.A. Dickey.
Insight: He's been pitiful versus the knuckleballer, collecting just two hits in 13 at bats (.154 AVG). With Dickey throwing for the Jays on Sunday, we're not expecting a big afternoon for Zobrist (.267, 7 HR, 49 RBI).
Yunel Escobar, SS7/21/2013 11:08:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar won't be in the starting nine but he could be available off the bench Sunday against the Blue Jays. SOURCE: Mark Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: He's missed the last three games with a strained right hamstring. For now, it would appear that Escobar will not be needing a trip to the disabled list.
Yunel Escobar, SS7/20/2013 11:18:00 AM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar was not in the lineup Friday due to a hamstring injury and will miss Saturday's game as well.
Insight: Escobar suffered the injury Sunday and the rest over the All-Star break didn't help him enough. Ben Zobrist will once again play shortstop, his 10th game there, which could make him eligible in some leagues.
Evan Longoria, 3BCold7/19/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria ended the first half in an 8-for-59 (.136) slump.
Insight: However, he went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Friday night. The third baseman played through plantar fasciitis prior to the All-Star break, so hopefully getting a few days off will help him get back in a groove at the plate.
Wil Myers, RFHot7/19/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers raised his average to .303 with a 3-for-5 game Friday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: His night included a solo home run and two runs scored. Myers has reached base in seven straight games and picked up multiple hits in five of the last six.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/19/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 with a solo home run Friday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Zobrist hit just .260 with six home runs and a .729 OPS prior to the All-Star break. Fantasy owners have to hope he has another second half like 2012 -- .292, 9 HR, .874 OPS -- ahead of him.
David Price, SP7/19/2013 10:27:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter David Price gave up three homers and four earned runs over the first three innings Friday at Toronto but hung around for seven innings and picked up his fourth win of the year.
Insight: Price has gone 3-1 since coming off the DL, but Friday was his first game in that span against a good offense. He faced Houston twice and the Chicago White Sox once prior to Friday.
Alex Cobb, SP7/19/2013 5:09:00 PM
Description: According to the Tampa Tribune, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday.
Insight: Cobb hasn't pitched since taking a liner off his head on June 15. He has passed all concussion tests and was cleared for the rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte after throwing a simulated game Thursday. He should return in early August.
Yunel Escobar, SS7/19/2013 5:05:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar is not in the lineup Friday due to a hamstring injury.
Insight: Escobar suffered the injury Sunday and getting rest over the All-Star break didn't help him enough. Ben Zobrist is starting at shortstop Friday.
James Loney, 1B7/19/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney is on the paternity leave list and could miss the weekend series.
Insight: Loney (.315, 9 HR, 43 RBI), to the surprise of many, is actually having a great season, but will miss some time. Sean Rodriguez is likely to cover Loney's position, but he offers little for fantasy owners.
Chris Archer, SPHot7/14/2013 6:10:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer tossed his first major league complete game Sunday against Houston.
Insight: That's a pretty nice way to finish the first half. The young phenom is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his past five starts. The Rays haven't set their rotation yet for after the All-Star break so it's unknown when Archer will make his next start.
Luke Scott, DHHot7/13/2013 10:15:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is 28-for-75 (.373) with eight doubles, five homers, 16 RBI and eight walks over his last 23 games.
Insight: Scott was hitting .207 back on June 12, but he's up to .274 after his latest game in which he went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. The DH is extremely streaky, so enjoy this before his next extended slump comes along.
Alex Cobb, SP7/13/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) will throw live batting practice before Sunday's game.
Insight: Smith said that the Rays scheduling Cobb for live BP means he has passed all concussion tests. The right-hander hasn't pitched since taking a liner off his head on June 15. Cobb will likely need a couple of rehab starts, so he's probably aiming for a return in early August.
David Price, SP7/12/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay ace David Price went all nine innings Friday in a loss to the Astros.
Insight: The 87-pitch outing was the shortest complete game in the majors this season. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Rays.
Matt Moore, SP7/12/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: With Yu Darvish out with a back injury, Rays lefthander Matt Moore will take his place on the American League All-Star team.
Insight: It's Moore's first All-Star invite. Having started on Thursday, Moore (13-3, 3.44 ERA) should be well-rested. Don't be surprised if Jim Leyland lets him pitch an inning or two on Tuesday night.
Alex Cobb, SP7/11/2013 9:37:00 PM
Description: According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) said his bullpen session Thursday went well.
Insight: Cobb also said that he believed he passed his concussion test Wednesday. He hasn't pitched since being hit in the head by a line drive on June 15, so he'll have to build his arm back up, but he could be back by the end of July if he really did pass his concussion test yesterday.
Evan Longoria, 3BCold7/11/2013 7:56:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria made his one hit count Thursday against the Twins.
Insight: Longoria went 1-for-4 with a homer, his first in 15 games. The third baseman has been playing through plantar fasciitis and has gone 7-for-48 (.146) with 16 strikeouts, 14 walks and four RBI over his last 15 games.
Matt Moore, SPHot7/11/2013 7:52:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore has won five straight starts, including Thursday's outing against the Twins.
Insight: Moore (13-3, 3.44 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) has bounced back nicely from a stretch in early June in which he went 0-3 with a 13.86 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP in 12 1/3 innings. During his five-game winning streak, he has struck out 40 batters and allowed seven earned runs on 18 hits in 33 innings. Walks continue to be an issue for the lefty, however -- he has a 4.61 BB/9.
Wil Myers, RF7/11/2013 7:50:00 PM
Description: Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers went 3-for-4 with two RBI Thursday against the Twins.
Insight: Myers went 3-for-23 with eight strikeouts in six games prior to getting a day off Tuesday, but he has gone 5-for-9 since returning to the lineup Wednesday.
James Loney, 1B7/11/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney hasn't been able to do much damage against Mike Pelfrey in ten prior at bats.
Insight: He's hitting .100 versus the Twins righthander. Loney (.313, 9 HR, 43 RBI) is actually having a great season but we wouldn't recommend using him Thursday against Pelfrey.
Ben Zobrist, 2B7/11/2013 10:01:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist singled home the game-winning run Wednesday in an extra innings thriller against Minnesota.
Insight: Zobrist (.261, 6 HR, 48 RBI) finished the night 1-for-5. The 32-year-old was recently selected to represent Tampa Bay at next week's All-Star Game. He'll be the only Ray making the trip to Citi Field.
Wil Myers, RFCold7/10/2013 6:08:00 PM
Description: Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers is in the starting lineup Wednesday after getting Tuesday's game off.
Insight: Myers is 3-for-23 with eight strikeouts over his last six games, so the Rays gave him a day off to clear his head. The rookie is hitting .247 with three homers and a 26/4 K/BB in 91 plate appearances this season, but he's worth owning in all leagues.
Kelly Johnson, 2B7/10/2013 10:57:00 AM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson is 7-for-22 (.318) with four home runs versus Minnesota starter Kevin Correia.
Insight: Johnson's been struggling at the plate, batting .164 over his past 18 games, but this matchup might help get him going. He had a huge May, batting .330 with seven homers and 26 RBI, and fantasy owners hope he finds it again.
Chris Archer, SP7/9/2013 10:03:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer only allowed three hits and his lone run was unearned Tuesday against the visiting Twins.
Insight: The hard-throwing Archer came in having issued 21 free passes in 36 2/3 innings this season but he didn't walk anyone in six innings Tuesday. He's 3-3 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP so far.
Wil Myers, RF7/9/2013 3:53:00 PM
Description: Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers is not in Tuesday's starting lineup versus the Minnesota Twins.
Insight: After a solid start, batting .296 in 13 June games, Myers is struggling this month batting just .161 in eight contests. Perhaps the rest day will do him good.
David Price, SP7/7/2013 7:26:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price threw a complete game in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. He scattered eight hits, seven of which were singles, walked none and struck out six.
Insight: Price has allowed 11 hits and one run and posted a 15/0 K/BB in 16 innings since returning from the DL. It helped that he faced two of the worst offensive teams in the majors in Houston and Chicago in his first two games, but fantasy owners will take it after Price went 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA prior to his injury.
Alex Cobb, SP7/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Rays starter Alex Cobb (concussion) will throw a bullpen session of Friday.
Insight: Cobb is making his way back from a concussion after being hit in the head with a line drive in mid-June. this is the next step in the process. There is still no timetable for his return.
Ben Zobrist, RF7/5/2013 3:58:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay 2B/OF Ben Zobrist will sit out Friday's series opener with the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: He's batting .260 with five homers, 44 RBI, 45 runs and five stolen bases, but it hitless in his last three games (14 at-bats) and can probably use the day off.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/5/2013 3:55:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is back at third base after playing at DH for the past few days due to a foot injury.
Insight: His plantar fasciitis must have subsided as many thought he would DH up to the All-Star break. Give Longoria (.294, 17 HR, 48 RBI) credit for playing through the pain.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/2/2013 6:41:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is back after missing three games with a foot injury.
Insight: Plantar fasciitis usually takes a while to subside so Longoria's foot might not be 100 percent until after the All-Star break. Give Longoria (.298, 17 HR, 47 RBI) credit for playing through the pain.
David Price, SP7/2/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: The Rays activated David Price on Tuesday to face the Houston Astros.
Insight: Price has been battling a triceps injury since mid-May. The 2012 AL Cy Young winner hasn't had a great season so far. In nine starts, he's just 1-4 with an ERA over five. Hopefully it was caused by injury and the month and a half off will have him pitching like a superstar again.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/1/2013 6:43:00 PM
Description: According to the Tampa Tribune, Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is hoping to return from plantar fasciitis sometime "within the next few days."
Insight: He left Friday's game in the second inning and hasn't played since. Longoria did take some grounders at third before the game today, which is always a good sign. As of now, it doesn't look like Longoria (.298, 17 HR, 47 RBI) will require a DL stint.
Alex Cobb, SP7/1/2013 12:53:00 PM
Description: According to the Tampa Tribune, Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) will not travel with the team to Houston.
Insight: Cobb is making his way back from a concussion after being hit in the head with a line drive in mid-June. Chris Archer will draw the start Thursday against the Astros.
Evan Longoria, 3B7/1/2013 12:48:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria (plantar fasciitis) might be available to pinch-hit Monday, but he won't start, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Longoria had to exit Friday's game due to lingering soreness related to his plantar fasciitis, which tends to be a recurring injury. The third baseman's participation off the bench Monday would be a good sign that he is making progress rather than nearing a disabled list trip.
Jeremy Hellickson, SPHot7/1/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson had a 4.31 ERA in April and a 6.69 ERA in May and was 2-2 combined in those months, but he went 5-1 with 3.53 ERA in June.
Insight: Hellickson's ERA for the month would have been better if he hadn't allowed eight runs against the Royals in his lone loss of June. In his five wins, he gave up just six runs combined.
Evan Longoria, 3B6/29/2013 6:15:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria (plantar fasciitis) won't be placed on the disabled list right now, according to Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Longoria had to exit Friday's game due to lingering soreness related to his plantar fasciitis, which tends to be a recurring injury. The third baseman will sit out a couple days before either returning to the lineup or going on the disabled list.
Kelly Johnson, 2BCold6/29/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson is a bad choice for Saturday's game with Detroit as he's hitless in 11 at-bats, with six strikeouts, versus Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Johnson's been struggling at the plate, batting .119 over his past 17 games, so this matchup should be avoided at all costs.
Matt Joyce, RF6/29/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Matt Joyce is 6-for-14 (.429) with a pair of home runs against Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: He's hitting just .139 over the past two weeks with no power, so it would be a tough start for any fantasy owner.
Evan Longoria, 3B6/28/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria aggravated his plantar fascitis Friday against Detroit. SOURCE: Tampa Tribune
Insight: Longoria left in the second inning with Kelly Johnson coming on to take his place. Plantar fascitis isn't usually something that's conquered in just a few days. If his condition worsens, we could see Longoria wind up on the disabled list.
David Price, SP6/28/2013 6:59:00 PM
Description: The Rays expect David Price to return Tuesday against the Astros. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Price has been battling a triceps injury since mid-May. The 2012 AL Cy Young winner hasn't had a great season so far. In nine starts, he's just 1-4 with an ERA over five.
Desmond Jennings, LF6/28/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is just 1-for-9 with four strikeouts against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Jennings OPS has been on the rise, from .695 in April to .779 in May and .788 in June, but this matchup is unfavorable.
Ben Zobrist, RFCold6/28/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist is an ugly 1-for-12 (.083) against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: He's managed only three hits in 21 previous at bats and this matchup against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball isn't likely to help. Avoid this matchup.
David Price, SP6/27/2013 12:32:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander David Price (triceps) appears ready to come off the disabled list after dominating in his latest rehab start, according to the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Granted, Price was facing a Single-A team, but he threw five shutout innings and struck out eight while allowing two hits and one walk. "I guess whatever I did out there today is going to be my lobbying," Price said of his chance to rejoin the Rays. "If that's not enough, I guess I'll have to throw another one." Price added that his strained left triceps that has kept him out since mid-May felt fine and that he could have thrown more than 72 pitches Wednesday. Price's fastball sat in the 92- to 94-mph range during the start.
Luke Scott, DH6/26/2013 9:19:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is hitless against Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Scott (.241, 4 HR, 26 RBI) isn't alone in his frustration against the knuckle ball pitcher. Catcher Jose Molina is 0-for-8, so the bottom of the Rays lineup isn't likely to be productive on Wednesday afternoon.
Desmond Jennings, LF6/26/2013 9:15:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is just 1-for-10 with three strikeouts against Blue Jays knuckler ball pitcher R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Jennings OPS has been on the rise, from .695 in April to .779 in May and .808 in June, but this matchup is unfavorable.
Matt Moore, SPCold6/25/2013 10:46:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore struck out 11 and allowed one run on four hits over six innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: However, he walked six. Obviously, fantasy owners will take this start after Moore went 1-3 with a 10.61 ERA and a 2.36 WHIP over his last four starts, but his 4.98 BB/9 on the season could be problematic.
James Loney, 1B6/25/2013 10:43:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney has hit safely in seven straight games.
Insight: Loney lost 25 points off his average by going 6-for-41 (.146) from June 11-22, but is 7-for-13 over his last three games.
Jeremy Hellickson, SPHot6/24/2013 10:37:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson (7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER) was phenomenal Monday in a win over Toronto.
Insight: The loss snapped the Jays' 11-game winning streak. Since giving up eight runs against the Royals on June 13th, Hellickson is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts.
Chris Archer, SP6/23/2013 8:00:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer limited the Yankees to six hits and one earned run over six innings Sunday.
Insight: Archer, who is one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, walked one and struck out four. The right-hander has had two good starts and three poor ones since being recalled.
James Loney, 1B6/23/2013 7:56:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney broke out of his recent slump with three hits and two RBI Sunday.
Insight: Loney lost 25 points off his average by going 6-for-41 (.146) from June 11-22. He pushed his average back over .300 Sunday.
Yunel Escobar, SS6/23/2013 12:14:00 PM
Description: Yunel Escobar doesn't look like an appealing fantasy option Sunday against New York.
Insight: That's because the Rays shortstop is only a .154 lifetime hitter against Yankees starter Ivan Nova. Despite his struggles against Nova, manager Joe Maddon has him starting at shortstop and batting ninth.
Matt Joyce, RFCold6/23/2013 12:11:00 PM
Description: Rays DH Matt Joyce has been pitiful against New York righthander Ivan Nova throughout his career.
Insight: He's hitting just .118 against him with five whiffs in 17 at bats. Joyce is just three for his last 20 and Sunday's meeting with Nova certainly won't help matters. Consider subbing Joyce out for another outfielder if you can afford to do so.
Ben Zobrist, RF6/23/2013 12:06:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay utility player Ben Zobrist has been useless against Yankees starter Ivan Nova.
Insight: He's managed only two hits in 18 previous at bats against the righthander. Zobrist is 4-for-13 in the series with two RBI.
Wil Myers, RF6/22/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: Saturday was a day of firsts for Wil Myers. The Rays rookie recorded his first major league home run in the sixth inning. The hit was also his first career grand slam.
Insight: CC Sabathia doesn't give up too many home runs so he'll probably want to keep that ball in a glass case some place safe. Myers (.280) finished the afternoon with three hits and has now hit safely in each of his last five games.
Jose Molina, C6/22/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina is hitless in 16 at-bats versus Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia.
Insight: Molina isn't much of an offensive threat to begin with (.262, .626 OPS) so his lack of success against Sabathia shouldn't change many lineups. Backup Jose Lobaton is 3-for-8 against Sabathia and is likely to get the start.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot6/22/2013 9:53:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is one of the few hitters who likes seeing Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia on the mound as he's a career .356 hitter with five home runs and a 1.247 OPS in 45 at-bats.
Insight: Longoria has 16 home runs on the year after hitting a pair in Thursday's series opener. The third baseman has never hit .300 in a season, but he's at .303 in 2013. The only thing he doesn't do is steal bases anymore, but fantasy owners should just be happy that the injury-prone slugger is healthy.
David Price, SP6/21/2013 8:14:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander David Price (triceps) allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and four K over 2 2/3 innings Friday in his first rehab start, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Price threw 49 pitches and said he felt really good. He'll probably need 1-2 more rehab starts before returning to the Rays' rotation.
Evan Longoria, 3B6/20/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria crushed two homers and drove in three runs Thursday versus New York.
Insight: Longoria has 16 blasts on the year. The third baseman has never hit .300 in a season, but he's at .307 in 2013.
Matt Moore, SPCold6/20/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore threw his first quality start since May 25 Thursday against the Yankees.
Insight: He gave up four hits and three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 9-3, but also walked three. Moore had a 2.18 ERA and was 8-0 coming into this month, but he allowed 26 hits, walked 11 and gave up 19 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings over his last three starts. Moore's K/BB this season is a disappointing 1.71 (4.69 BB/9). That's a step back from last year's 2.16.
Carlos Pena, 1B6/20/2013 8:20:00 PM
Description: Astros first baseman Carlos Pena hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Thursday versus the Brewers.
Insight: Pena is only hitting .223 this season. That average was tolerable when he was hitting 30-35 homers, but he has just eight blasts this season.
Luke Scott, DH6/20/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott has a hard time putting bat to ball when facing Yankees hurler Andy Pettitte. In 15 at-bats, he's managed just two hits while striking out seven times.
Insight: Scott is on a modest five-game hitting streak, but this in an unfavorable matchup.
Evan Longoria, 3B6/20/2013 10:33:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria should not be started against Yankees starter Andy Pettitte as he's just 2-for-21 (.095) against the left-hander.
Insight: Longoria broke out of a mini two-game hitless streak with three singles against the Red Sox Wednesday night, but this matchup might put him back in another one. Avoid.
Ben Zobrist, RF6/20/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist is a lifetime .409 hitter (9-for-22) with a 1.189 OPS versus Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
Insight: Zobrist has heated up in June batting .323 in 17 games. It's interesting to note that he's even stolen two bases off Pettitte, who may have the best pickoff move in baseball.
James Loney, 1BCold6/19/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney is just 2-for-19 (.105) against Boston starter Ryan Dempster.
Insight: Loney is 0-for-18 over his last six games, and hasn't been able to solve Dempster. Get him on the bench Wednesday.
Wil Myers, RF6/18/2013 7:58:00 PM
Description: Wil Myers went hitless in his major league debut Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: He also misjudged a ball in right field, which led to a triple for Jacoby Ellsbury. Maybe he'll have better luck in the night game of the doubleheader.
Alex Cobb, SP6/18/2013 2:40:00 PM
Description: Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (concussion) has no timetable for his return, manager Joe Maddon said, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Cobb was hit in the head by a line drive Saturday and was placed on the 7-day DL the following day. He'll need to pass MLB's concussion protocol before he's cleared to return.
Jake Odorizzi, SP6/18/2013 1:48:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi has been recalled from Triple-A Durham to start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.
Insight: This is Odorizzi's third stint with the team this season. He's considered one of the team's top prospects, but has struggled with the big league club. He has allowed 17 hits and 11 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings over three appearances (two starts) and isn't expected to remain with the team after Tuesday.
Wil Myers, RF6/18/2013 12:43:00 PM
Description: The Rays are expected to start Wil Myers in right field for both games of Tuesday's doubleheader versus Boston, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Myers hit 51 home runs and drove in 166 runs in 774 at-bats over the last two seasons in the minors. He'll make his major league debut Tuesday and should be owned in all leagues. He should play every day in right field while the Rays mix-and-match Kelly Johnson, Matt Joyce and Luke Scott in left field and at DH.
Ryan Roberts, 2B6/16/2013 6:36:00 PM
Description: The Rays shipped Ryan Roberts to Triple-A to make room for top prospect Wil Myers.
Insight: "Tatman" has been struggling all year and he probably deserved to be the odd man out. Despite his struggles, Roberts (.238, 3 HR, 13 RBI) should get another chance in the big leagues later this season.
Wil Myers, RF6/16/2013 6:20:00 PM
Description: Triple-A couldn't hold Wil Myers any longer. The Rays finally promoted their top prospect to the majors on Sunday. SOURCE: Joe Smith, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: The only question is ... what took them so long? Well, it's not that hard to pinpoint, really. Clearly, Tampa Bay was waiting for Myers to become Super Two eligible, which gives him an extra year of arbitration eligibility. He's been tearing it up in the minors (.283, 14 HR, 57 RBI in 63 games) and we're guessing Myers will be able to make an impact at the major league level right away. He'll be a hot add in fantasy leagues this week.
Wil Myers, RF6/16/2013 4:32:00 PM
Description: Rays outfield prospect Wil Myers is hitting .283 with 14 homers and an .868 OPS with Triple-A Durham this season.
Insight: Myers is one of the top prospects in baseball and he clearly has mastered the minors. However, it doesn't seem like Tampa Bay has any plans to call him up.
Alex Cobb, SP6/16/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: The Rays have placed Alex Cobb on the 7-day disabled list with a minor concussion.
Insight: Cobb was taken off on a stretcher after being hit in the head with a line drive Saturday, but he never lost consciousness throughout the whole ordeal and appears to have avoided a serious brain or head injury. He'll be released from the hospital Sunday.
Yunel Escobar, SS6/16/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar has a .381 average against Royals starter Wade Davis.
Insight: Escobar is 8-for-21 with two doubles and four walks against Davis. The shortstop is just 1-for-15 (.067) over his last five games, but seeing Davis Sunday should help him get back on track.
Alex Torres, RPHot6/15/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Rays lefty Alex Torres struck out four over 1 2/3 hitless innings to grab his second win of the season Saturday against the Royals.
Insight: The 25-year-old Torres had strong numbers as a starter at Triple-A, and he has been unhittable in middle relief since being called up at the start of June. Over 16 innings, he has fanned 23 batters and allowed three hits, three walks and zero earned runs in eight appearances this season.
Alex Cobb, SP6/15/2013 9:23:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb has been diagnosed with a mild concussion, according to Raysbaseball.com.
Insight: Cobb was taken off on a stretcher after being hit in the head with a line drive Saturday, but he never lost consciousness throughout the whole ordeal. He appears to have avoided a serious brain or head injury. He'll remain in the hospital overnight for further observation.
Matt Joyce, OFHot6/15/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Matt Joyce has homered in four of the last six games.
Insight: Joyce hit his 14th of the season Saturday against the Royals and is batting .319 with eight bombs and 18 RBI since May 18.
Alex Cobb, SP6/15/2013 5:52:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb left Saturday's start after taking a line drive from Eric Hosmer off the back of his head.
Insight: Cobb was taken off on a stretcher. Hopefully, the right-hander comes out of this without a serious head or brain injury.
Matt Joyce, OFHot6/15/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Matt Joyce is 10-for-27 (.370) with four extra base hits and a 1.030 OPS versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Joyce has homered in three of the last five games and hits right-handed pitching 60 points better than left-handers this season. Start him.
David Price, SP6/13/2013 4:59:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander David Price said he felt great during a simulated game Thursday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Price should be able to start a rehab assignment within the next few days.
Yunel Escobar, SS6/13/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar is a .412 hitter in 17 at-bats versus Ervin Santana.
Insight: Escobar is 7-for-17 with four RBI against the Royals right-hander. The shortstop's overall numbers -- .251, five homers, 27 RBIs -- aren't anything special, but they look much better if you remove his 7-for-59 (.119) slump to start the season. Since then, he's hitting .304 with five homers, 24 RBI, a 14/13 K/BB and an .828 OPS.
Ben Zobrist, RFHot6/13/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist has gone 2-for-13 (.154) with one RBI and four strikeouts against Ervin Santana of the Royals.
Insight: Like last season, Zobrist has heated up after the calendar flipped to June. He's hitting .481 with four doubles, a homer, three RBI and five walks over his last seven games, so you might want to have him in the lineup anyway Thursday even though Santana is on the mound.
Kelly Johnson, 2BCold6/13/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson has gone just 1-for-11 (.091) with four strikeouts against Royals starter Ervin Santana, who will start Thursday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Johnson is just 4-for-40 (.100) over his last 10 games. It's a predictable slump, as the strikeout-prone Johnson's .298 batting average over his first 45 games was aided by a .337 BABIP while his line-drive rate has hovered around 15 percent.
Luke Scott, DH6/13/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott has a nice matchup Thursday versus Ervin Santana of the Royals.
Insight: Scott is 8-for-21 (.381) with two round-trippers and six RBIs against Santana. If you've been holding onto him despite his injury and .207 average, today would be a good day to get him in the lineup.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot6/13/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria came away with five hits, including two homers, in 12 career at-bats against Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Longoria has homered in three straight games, and with Santana on the hill he has a good shot to make it four.
Matt Joyce, OF6/11/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Matt Joyce went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, a walk and a steal Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Joyce hit ninth in the order for the second time this season. He has started a game this season in every batting order spot except for eighth, but he has been at his best hitting either first or second.
Desmond Jennings, LF6/11/2013 10:27:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings led Tampa Bay to a win over Boston Tuesday with a pair of solo home runs.
Insight: Jennings went 3-for-5 with three runs in the game. He hit leadoff for the first time since May 26.
Jake Odorizzi, SP6/11/2013 6:23:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi has been recalled from Triple-A Durham.
Insight: However, he's not joining the rotation this time. The team needed a fresh arm in the bullpen after Monday's 14-inning game. Odorizzi, who was acquired from Kansas City along with Wil Myers in the James Shields trade, is one of the team's top prospects, but he allowed 13 hits and nine runs in nine innings earlier this season when he was called up to join the rotation.
David Price, SP6/11/2013 5:54:00 PM
Description: Rays left-hander David Price is expected to start his minor league rehab assignment next week, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Price has to get through his simulated game on Thursday first. The Rays are hoping to get him four starts before the All-Star break.
Alex Cobb, SP6/11/2013 5:47:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb has been placed on the bereavement list due to the death of his grandmother.
Insight: Cobb allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings Monday against Boston in what was his worst start of the season. He's unlikely to miss his next start.
Luke Scott, DH6/11/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is a career 0-for-11 with five strikeouts against Boston lefty Jon Lester.
Insight: When Scott can get 400-plus at-bats, he produced 25-to-30 home runs, but injuries have shortcircuited him over the past two seasons. He does most of his damage against right-handers and this matchup should be avoided.
Kelly Johnson, 2B6/11/2013 11:19:00 AM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson is hitless in 12 career at-bats against Boston starter Jon Lester.
Insight: The left fielder is hitting .257 with 10 homers, 37 RBI and six steals this season and is a good fantasy option when healthy. He's coming off a back injury and may not be 100 percent as he's 2-for-20 since missing a pair of games.
Ben Zobrist, RF6/11/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist is 8-for-42 (.190) against Boston left-hander Jon Lester with 17 strikeouts.
Insight: For the second straight year Zobrist has started the season without much powert - four homers. He's still a viable fantasy option batting .274 with 37 runs scored, 36 RBI. Hopefully he'll have a strong second half just as he did last season. Tuesday's matchup is not a good one.
Wil Myers, RF6/10/2013 2:25:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay has no plans to bring up top prospect Wil Myers in the next few weeks, according to beat writer Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune. This conflicts with information from ESPN's Jim Bowden who thought he would be up shortly.
Insight: At the start of the season, MLB.com ranked Myers as the fourth-best prospect in baseball. He's batting .287 with 12 HR and 52 RBI for the Triple-A Durham Bulls.
Desmond Jennings, LF6/10/2013 10:29:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is hitless in eight at-bats against John Lacksy, half ending in strikeouts.
Insight: Jennings (.246, 6 HR, 24 RBI, 37 runs, 7 SB) hasn't become the star forecasted for him, but does add a combination of power and speed that makes him a low-end fantasy value.
Luke Scott, DH6/10/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is a career 7-for-18 with a pair of homers against Boston right-hander John Lackey.
Insight: When Scott can get 400-plus at-bats, he produced 25-to-30 home runs, but injuries have shortcircuited him over the past two seasons. He does most of his damage against right-handers and Lackey is a favorable matchup.
Ben Zobrist, RF6/9/2013 7:00:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist hit his fourth home run of the season Sunday against the Orioles. He went 1-for-2, walked once and scored two runs.
Insight: More was expected of Zobrist from a power perspective, but fantasy owners should buy low. The utilityman also started off slow last year, hitting .199 with six home runs over his first 231 plate appearances. He batted .306 with 14 home runs in his final 437. Zobrist has not lost his batting eye -- he has a 36/31 K/BB.
Matt Moore, SP6/9/2013 6:56:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits in five innings Sunday against the Orioles and has given up 14 earned runs on 19 hits in his last seven innings.
Insight: As we said earlier this season, Moore has been due for a little regression; he carried a BABIP under .200 for much of the season and started out 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA. However, the last two starts have swung him in the other direction. He now has a 3.78 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP, but is definitely more talented than that.
Wil Myers, RF6/8/2013 9:11:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that Tampa Bay prospect Wil Myers could make his big league debut sometime in the next ten days.
Insight: At the start of the season, MLB.com ranked Myers as the fourth-best prospect in baseball. He's currently second in the International League with 49 RBI.
Jeremy Hellickson, SP6/8/2013 8:28:00 PM
Description: Jeremy Hellickson held the Orioles to four hits over six scoreless innings Saturday in an 8-0 Rays victory.
Insight: Hellickson hasn't allowed a walk in either of his last two outings. The righthander is undefeated in his last eight starts (3-0, 5.73 ERA).
Desmond Jennings, LF6/7/2013 10:07:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings hit the deciding two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday against the Orioles.
Insight: Jennings was dropped from the leadoff spot in late May. He's 11-for-32 (.344) hitting in other spots in the order this season, but he's 0-for-2 in steals outside the leadoff spot.
Chris Archer, SP6/7/2013 9:59:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer limited Baltimore to two hits and one run while walking two and striking out two over seven innings Friday for his first win of the season.
Insight: Archer, who is one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, should remain in the rotation until David Price returns. He should be added in deeper mixed leagues.
David Price, SP6/7/2013 4:50:00 PM
Description: According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Rays left-hander David Price said he felt good Friday after throwing his first bullpen session since being placed on the DL with a triceps injury.
Insight: Price threw 38 pitches during the session and is scheduled to throw another one Monday. If he gets through Monday's bullpen without issue, he'll likely progress to a simulated game or a minor league rehab start.
Kelly Johnson, 2B6/7/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson (back) missed the last two games, but is back in the lineup for Friday's game against Baltimore, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: The left fielder is hitting .275 with 10 homers, 35 RBI and six steals this season and is a very good fantasy option when healthy.
Kelly Johnson, 2B6/7/2013 12:20:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson (back) missed Thursday's game against the Tigers and is questionable for Friday's game against Baltimore.
Insight: The left fielder is hitting .275 with 10 homers, 35 RBI and six steals this season and is a very good fantasy option when healthy.
James Loney, 1BHot6/7/2013 12:07:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney has a career .303 batting average and three home runs versus Baltimoe starter Jason Hammel.
Insight: Loney (.328, 7 HR, 32 RBI) is on quite a power surge with a .908 OPS through 59 games. He's hitting a home run every 27.42 at-bats, well above his career average (42.02). Start him.
Kelly Johnson, 2B6/6/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson (back) missed Thursday's game against the Tigers.
Insight: Johnson was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with back tightness. The left fielder is hitting .275 with 10 homers, 35 RBI and six steals this season.
Ben Zobrist, RF6/6/2013 10:29:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay utility man Ben Zobrist has never recorded a hit against Tigers starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: He's hitless in 10 career at bats against him. Zobrist (3 HR, 33 RBI) is on pace for almost 100 RBI but his .246 batting average is frustrating for fantasy owners.
Yunel Escobar, SS6/6/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar has done well against Tigers righthander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Escobar hasn't been overly impressive this season (.245, 5 HR, 26 RBI) but fantasy owners can't ignore his strong numbers versus Scherzer (.423 lifetime average). If you've been keeping Escobar on your bench, today would be the day to start him.
Alex Cobb, SP6/5/2013 10:10:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Tigers but didn't factor into the decision.
Insight: The Rays won the game 3-0, but all three runs came in the ninth inning. The right-hander has been fantastic this season, going 6-2 with a 2.39 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. He has a 69/17 K/BB in 75 1/3 innings.
Kelly Johnson, 2B6/5/2013 8:33:00 PM
Description: Rays left fielder Kelly Johnson was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to back tightness, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Johnson is available to play off the bench, however. The left fielder is hitting .275 with 10 homers, 35 RBI and six steals this season.
Matt Moore, SP6/4/2013 10:16:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore had his worst start of the season Tuesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Moore came in 8-0 with a 2.18 ERA, but he walked six and allowed seven hits and six earned runs in two innings. Moore has been due for a little regression; he came into Tuesday's start with a 4.06 BB/9, a .201 BABIP and a 4.10 FIP.
Alex Cobb, SP6/3/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Rays righthander Alex Cobb is expected to start Wednesday versus the Tigers. Cobb was scratched from Friday's start against Cleveland because of a lacerated right middle finger.
Insight: Cobb is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two career starts against Detroit. He's had an outstanding season so far with six wins in his first 10 games (2.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP).
Desmond Jennings, LF6/2/2013 12:35:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is getting a day off Sunday.
Insight: Jennings is batting .255 with five homers, 35 runs and seven steals this season.
Chris Archer, SP6/1/2013 6:57:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Chris Archer allowed seven hits and five earned runs, walked three and struck out four over four innings in his 2013 debut Saturday against the Indians.
Insight: Archer is one of the Rays' top prospects. He should get a few more starts to prove himself while David Price is out.
Alex Torres, RP6/1/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Left-hander Alex Torres has been brought up on Saturday to provide bullpen depth after the team was forced to use the bullpen for eight innings on Friday night due to rain delays.
Insight: The 25-year-old Torres has been in the minors since 2006 and isn't a top prospect like Saturday's starter Chris Archer, but he has cleared up the control issues that plagued him last season. He was 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA, 1.196 WHIP and 61 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched.
Luke Scott, DH6/1/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs against Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Although Scott came back from injury with a hot bat, hitting .353 with a pair of home runs in his first seven games, he's cooled down and is batting just .194 over the past two weeks.
Chris Archer, SP5/31/2013 3:32:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay pitching prospect Chris Archer has been called up from Triple-A Durham and will start Saturday against Cleveland.
Insight: Archer is 24-years-old and has been developing in the minors since 2006. He has a 3.96 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 50 innings for the Bulls this season. He's a viable fantasy option with positive upside.
Alex Cobb, SP5/30/2013 8:26:00 PM
Description: Rays righthander Alex Cobb is expected to start Tuesday versus the Tigers. Cobb was scratched from Friday's start against Cleveland because of a fingernail issue. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Cobb is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two career starts against Detroit. He's had an outstanding season so far with six wins in his first 10 games (2.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP).
Yunel Escobar, SS5/30/2013 11:28:00 AM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar has a .370 career average against Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Escobar is 10-for-27 with three doubles and a homer against Nolasco. The shortstop is only batting .232 this season, but that includes him going 4-for-45 (.089) over his first 13 games. Since that season-opening slump, Escobar is hitting .286 with four homers and 21 RBI in 34 games.
Alex Cobb, SP5/29/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb's next scheduled start has been pushed back from Friday due to a cut between his nail and finger, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. It's uncertain when he will start next.
Insight: The wound started bleeding during his last start and prevented Cobb from throwing off-speed pitches during his bullpen session Wednesday. The team will start prospect Alex Colome, who was just called up Wednesday to serve as bullpen depth, Thursday and move Matt Moore to Friday.
Roberto Hernandez, SP5/29/2013 10:23:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Roberto Hernandez allowed an unearned run in the first inning but ended up tossing 8 2/3 innings and allowing just three hits in a 3-1 victory over the Marlins Wednesday night.
Insight: Miami came along at a good time for Hernandez (3-5, 4.87 ERA), as he needed a good start to keep his spot in the rotation. However, it's still the Marlins, so fantasy owners shouldn't run out and acquire Hernandez.
Alex Torres, RP5/29/2013 6:49:00 PM
Description: Left-hander Alex Torres is one of two options the Rays are considering to start Friday along with Chris Archer.
Insight: The 25-year-old Torres has been in the minors since 2006 and isn't a top prospect like Archer, but he has cleared up the control issues that plagued him last season. After posting a 91/63 K/BB abd 7.30 ERA in 69 innings with Triple-A Durham in 2012, he has a 61/21 K/BB and a 3.52 ERA in 46 innings this season and should be added in most leagues if he's called up.
Chris Archer, SP5/29/2013 6:38:00 PM
Description: Rays pitching prospect Chris Archer is one of the options the team is considering to replace Jake Odorizzi in the rotation Saturday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Odorizzi was chosen to replace David Price (triceps) in the rotation but allowed nine runs in nine innings over two starts. Archer is 24 and has been developing in the minors since 2006. He has a 3.53 ERA and 203 strikeouts in 191career innings at Triple-A and should be added in all leagues if he is called up Saturday. The other option is 25-year-old lefty Alex Torres, who has a 3.52 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 46 innings with Triple-A Durham this season.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/28/2013 10:41:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings has hit seventh over the last two games and is 4-for-6 with a double.
Insight: Jennings hit leadoff in every other game this season. The outfielder is only batting .246, but perhaps a less stressful lineup spot will help him get going.
Kelly Johnson, 2B5/27/2013 9:05:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Kelly Johnson produced four hits Monday in a win over the Marlins.
Insight: Johnson (.296, 10 HR, 32 RBI) finished with two homers and six RBI. He's on pace to drive in 104 runs this season. Johnson's career-high is 71.
Carlos Pena, 1B5/27/2013 9:34:00 AM
Description: Astros first baseman Carlos Pena is 3-for-6 with two home runs and a 2.071 OPS versus Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin.
Insight: For a guy who has averaged .234 for his career, that's a huge jump in production and makes him a fantasy-worthy starter for one day.
Kelly Johnson, 2B5/26/2013 12:48:00 PM
Description: Kelly Johnson will watch from the dugout as the Rays take on the Yankees Sunday in the series finale.
Insight: The Tampa Bay second baseman finds himself out of the lineup for the second consecutive day. Johnson singled as a pinch-hitter on Saturday and he could be used in a similar capacity on Sunday.
Matt Joyce, OF5/26/2013 12:44:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay right fielder Matt Joyce is getting a day of rest Sunday against New York.
Insight: He missed time earlier in the week with a strained hamstring before returning for the series opener on Friday. Joyce (.256, 8 HR, 20 RBI) should be back in the lineup Monday versus Miami.
David Price, SP5/26/2013 11:45:00 AM
Description: According to the Tampa Bay Times, 2012 AL Cy Young winner David Price is unlikely to return from a triceps injury until mid-to-late June.
Insight: Price's trade value has taken a major hit thanks to this injury and the subpar 5.24 ERA he produced in his first nine starts. The Rays are probably wishing they had dealt Price during the offseason like the Mets did with their Cy Young winner, R.A. Dickey.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/26/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Despite another meltdown Saturday against the Yankees, Rays manager Joe Maddon says Fernando Rodney will retain his role as the team's closer.
Insight: Just because Maddon is sticking with Rodney, it doesn't mean fantasy owners have to. Milwaukee's Francisco Rodriguez could be a good option for owners looking to add a closer from the waiver wire.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/25/2013 9:30:00 PM
Description: Fernando Rodney's nightmare season continued Saturday against New York.
Insight: Saturday was Rodney's fifth blown save of the season. He's now blown three out of his last five save opportunities with a miserable 13.50 ERA over that span. Manager Joe Maddon may want to consider using Joel Peralta in the ninth inning if Rodney's struggles continue.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/24/2013 5:22:00 PM
Description: Rays manager Joe Maddon said the team has not even had discussions about removing Fernando Rodney from the closer role, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: After putting together one of the best seasons by a relief pitcher in major league history last year with 48 saves and a 0.60 ERA, Rodney already has blown four saves, allowed 11 earned runs and walked 17 batters in 18 1/3 innings. He blew two saves, allowed five earned runs and walked 15 batters in 74 2/3 innings last year. However, he remains the ninth-inning guy for the Rays.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/24/2013 4:38:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is not in the starting lineup Friday, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.
Insight: Jennings is just getting a day off. The outfielder is batting just .236 this season with five homers and six steals.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/22/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay closer Fernando Rodney blew his fourth save Wednesday in a loss to the Blue Jays.
Insight: The wheels are coming off for Rodney. The 36-year-old has posted a 5.40 ERA in 19 relief appearances and has now given up a run in three of his last four outings. It seemed impossible a year ago but Rodney could be close to losing his closer's job.
Jeremy Hellickson, P5/22/2013 9:12:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson threw his first quality start since April 20 Wednesday against the Blue Jays, but Fernando Rodney blew a save in the ninth.
Insight: Hellickson had a 7.71 ERA over his previous five starts, but he went eight innings and gave up two runs on four hits Wednesday. Hellickson has posted a strand rate above of at least 80 percent in both of his two full big league seasons, but this year has stranded just 63.9 percent.
Jake Odorizzi, SP5/22/2013 5:48:00 PM
Description: Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi's next start has been pushed back to Monday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. That means he'll get the Marlins instead of the Yankees.
Insight: Odorizzi was called up from Triple-A to take David Price's spot in the rotation while Price is on the DL with a triceps strain. In his first start of the season Odorizzi, who was acquired from the Royals in the James Shields trade, allowed five hits and three runs in his first two innings but finished up by retiring nine of 10 from innings 3-5. He should be owned in all 12-team mixed leagues.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/21/2013 10:26:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Jennings has five bombs and six steals and has scored 30 runs in 42 games, but he's hitting .241 with 43 K.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/21/2013 10:24:00 PM
Description: Rays closer Fernando Rodney already has allowed 10 runs in 18 innings this season after giving up five in 74 2/3 last year.
Insight: Rodney already has walked one more batter than he did all of last year too. The right-hander set a new record for lowest ERA by a reliever with a 0.60 mark, but this year he has a 5.00 ERA.
Matt Joyce, OF5/21/2013 9:46:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Matt Joyce left Tuesday's game with a hamstring injury, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Joyce was removed for precautionary reasons for what the team is calling right hamstring tightness.
Carlos Pena, 1B5/20/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Astros first baseman Carlos Pena is 9-for-26 (.346) with a 1.038 OPS versus Royals hurler Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: For a guy who has averaged .234 for his career and .208 over the past four seasons, that's a huge jump in production and makes him a fantasy-worthy starter for one day.
Jose Molina, CCold5/20/2013 10:01:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina is hitless in eight at-bats versus Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Molina isn't much of an offensive threat to begin with (.221, .590 OPS) so his lack of success against Dickey shouldn't change many lineups. He's representative of the Rays' team lack of success against Dickey. Only one player on the roster has a batting average above .200 against Dickey (Kelly Johnson - .286).
Matt Moore, SPHot5/19/2013 8:00:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore became the first pitcher in MLB to reach eight wins Sunday against Baltimore.
Insight: He allowed just five hits and one run over seven innings. Opposing hitters are batting just .174 against Moore (8-0, 2.29 ERA) in 2013.
Ben Zobrist, RF5/19/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Rays IF/OF Ben Zobrist has a career .167 average is 21 at-bats against Orioles starter Chris Tillman.
Insight: Zobrist does have two homers against Tillman, but just three hits overall. The utilityman has struggled at the plate this year, hitting line drives at a rate of 16.7 percent, down from 21.8 percent last year, and batting .253. He also has just three homers, but he has salvaged some of his value with 11 doubles, 27 RBI and 21 walks.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot5/19/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has crushed Orioles starter Chris Tillman, going 7-for-15 with three homers against the right-hander.
Insight: Longoria is raking this season, batting .329 with nine homers, 27 RBI and a .979 OPS, and Sunday should be another strong day for the third baseman.
Jake Odorizzi, SP5/18/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: The Rays officially announced that prospect Jake Odorizzi will make a start Monday against the Blue Jays in place of David Price (triceps). SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Odorizzi is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA and a 47/15 K/BB in 44 2/3 innings with Triple-A Durham this season. The other choices were Chris Archer and Alex Colome, but Odorizzi was expected to be the guy all along. He should be added in deeper mixed leagues.
Kelly Johnson, 2BHot5/18/2013 9:04:00 PM
Description: Rays second baseman Kelly Johnson has homered in two straight games.
Insight: Johnson is batting .273 with seven homers, 24 RBI and four steals. However, he has been incredibly lucky, putting up a .317 BABIP despite hitting line drives at a rate of just 14.3 percent.
Matt Joyce, OF5/18/2013 8:59:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Matt Joyce hit his first homer since May 1 Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: Joyce went 3-for-5 with five RBI in the game. He'll have an outburst from time to time, but he doesn't sustain his success long enough to satisfy fantasy owners.
Fernando Rodney, RPCold5/17/2013 8:09:00 PM
Description: Rays closer Fernando Rodney had a meltdown Thursday against Boston. Despite Rodney's struggles, manager Joe Maddon says he's "not really concerned." SOURCE: Tampa Bay Times
Insight: Rodney gave up three runs and four walks in just two thirds of an inning. His season ERA is up to 5.28, his highest since 2003. It's only May and Rodney has already blown more saves (three) than he did all of last season (just two in 50 save chances).
Chris Archer, SP5/16/2013 3:54:00 PM
Description: Rays pitching prospect Chris Archer made his scheduled start for Durham Thursday afternoon, making it likely that the team will go with Jake Odorizzi Monday to replace David Price (triceps).
Insight: Odorizzi and Archer are ranked by MLB.com as the No. 42 and 43 prospects, respectively, in baseball this season. Archer brought a 3.97 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 34 innings into Thursday's start and is someone to keep an eye on, but Odorizzi is likely the guy the team will choose to fill in for Price Monday and beyond.
Jake Odorizzi, SP5/16/2013 3:23:00 PM
Description: Rays pitching prospect Jake Odorizzi is the likely choice to replace David Price in the rotation Monday. Price was placed on the 15-day DL Thursday with a strained left triceps.
Insight: Odorizzi is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA and a 47/15 K/BB in 44 2/3 innings with Triple-A Durham this season, while Chris Archer is on a limited pitch count after some abbreviated starts at Triple-A, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. If Archer makes his scheduled start Thursday afternoon with Durham, we'll know the team has chosen Odorizzi. Odorizzi should be added in most formats given Tampa Bay's past success with pitching prospects.
David Price, SP5/16/2013 3:19:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Insight: The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner left Wednesday's start with the injury and has a 5.24 ERA in 55 innings. His fastball velocity is down a couple ticks, so it would make sense if this injury has been lingering unbeknownst to Price or the Rays. Jake Odorizzi or Chris Archer likely will be called up to take the spot in the rotation, and both would make for good fantasy options given the Rays' past success cultivating pitching prospects.
David Price, SP5/16/2013 1:30:00 PM
Description: Rays manager Joe Maddon said the MRI on David Price's left triceps showed "nothing serious," according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, but the left-hander is unlikely to make his next start Monday. He'll be reevaluated Thursday.
Insight: Price hasn't ruled himself out of Monday's start. He said he'll know more Thursday when he comes to Tropicana Field and tries to play catch. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner left Wednesday's start with the injury and has a 5.24 ERA in 55 innings. His fastball velocity is down a couple ticks, so it would make sense if this injury has been lingering unbeknownst to Price or the Rays.
David Price, SP5/15/2013 8:40:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price left Wednesday's start against Boston with left triceps tightness, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Price, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings and hasn't looked right all year. He has a 5.24 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP, and it wouldn't be surprising if an injury has been the cause of his struggles.
Luke Scott, DH5/15/2013 11:56:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is hitless in 11 at-bats versus Boston left-hander Jon Lester.
Insight: Although Scott came back from injury with a hot bat, hitting .353 with a pair of home runs in his first seven games, he's cooled down and this matchup is extremely unfavorable.
Carlos Pena, 1B5/15/2013 11:08:00 AM
Description: Astros first baseman Carlos Pena is hitless in eight at-bats versus Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Pena is .231 batting average this year which is a significant improvement from what he hit in 2012 (.197 in 160 games for Tampa Bay). Even so, this matchup should be avoided.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/14/2013 3:43:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is in Tuesday's starting lineup against Boston. He's been with a groin injury which had kept him out of the lineup since Friday
Insight: Jennings is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak to raise his average to .244. If he can stay healthy the rest of the way he could end up being a 20-20 guy.
Jose Molina, CCold5/14/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina is hitless in 10 at-bats versus Boston starter John Lackey.
Insight: Molina isn't much of an offensive threat to begin with (.159, .445 OPS) so his lack of success against lackey shouldn't change many lineups.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/13/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is questionable for Tuesday's game against Boston with a groin injury which has kept him out of the lineup since Friday
Insight: Jennings is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. Sam Fuld and Matt Joyce have covered the outfield spot for him in his absence.
James Loney, 1BHot5/12/2013 8:19:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay first baseman James Loney swatted his third home run of the season Sunday against San Diego.
Insight: Loney (.376, 3 HR, 20 RBI) is on quite a tear right now. Over his last nine games, he's hitting .412 with two homers, nine runs and seven RBI. Somehow Loney is only owned in 26 percent of ESPN leagues, though that's an 18 percent increase from last week.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/11/2013 2:50:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings will miss another day with his groin injury.
Insight: Jennings is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. Sam Fuld will start in the outfield and Matt Joyce will take the leadoff spot in the batting order.
Alex Cobb, SP5/10/2013 10:42:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb struck out 13 batters in just 4 2/3 innings Friday against the Padres. He took a no decision after allowing five hits and three runs.
Insight: All those strikeouts caused Cobb to throw 117 pitches. The right-hander has a 46/10 K/BB and a 3.09 ERA in 46 2/3 innings this season.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/10/2013 5:29:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings has "a bit of a sore groin," manager Joe Maddon said. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: Jennings is not in the starting lineup Friday. He's in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak.
Desmond Jennings, LF5/10/2013 4:40:00 PM
Description: Although in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak, Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings is getting Friday night off.
Insight: He has raised his average from .218 to .244 during the streak. Sam Fuld (.184, no homers, 1 RBI 3 runs) should get the start, but he's done nothing to make fantasy owners put him in their starting lineup.
Jose Molina, C5/10/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay catcher Jose Molina has three extra base hits, including a pair of home runs, in six at-bats versus Padres starter Edinson Volquez.
Insight: Molina has been struggling at the plate, going hitless in his last six games, so it would take a leap of faith to put him in a fantasy lineup for Friday based on such a small sample size.
Evan Longoria, 3BHot5/9/2013 10:56:00 PM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is 22-for-51(.431) with seven doubles, a triple, three homers, 12 RBI and a 7/6 K/BB over his last 12 games.
Insight: Longoria's average is now .331, and he has 18 extra-base hits. As usual, the only thing that can prevent Longoria from having a monster season is an injury.
David Price, SP5/9/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price fired eight innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits (1 BB, 8 K) Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Price, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, opposed R.A. Dickey, who won the NL Cy Young last year. Neither pitcher has lived up to expectations. Price (1-3, 5.64 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) has given up 61 hits (8 HR) and 33 earned runs in 52 2/3 innings.
Carlos Pena, 1B5/9/2013 1:09:00 PM
Description: Astros first baseman Carlos Pena has been dreadful against Los Angeles starter Jason Vargas (.091 in 11 at bats).
Insight: The sad thing is that Pena's .230 batting average this year is a significant improvement from what he hit in 2012 (.197 in 160 games for Tampa Bay). Even when he's hitting home runs (he only has three this season), Pena's too risky to own in any fantasy leagues.
Evan Longoria, 3B5/9/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: Rays third baseman Evan Longoria had a productive night Wednesday against Toronto.
Insight: He went 3-for-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Longoria's .320 batting average this season is ninth-best in the American League.
Kelly Johnson, 2BHot5/9/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Rays second baseman Kelly Johnson swatted his fifth home run of the year Wednesday in a 10-4 victory over Toronto.
Insight: Johnson (3-for-4) has gone 8-for-14 in his last four games with three RBI. He's batting .423 in May after hitting a disappointing .227 in the opening month.
Alexander Torres, RP5/8/2013 3:59:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay Rays minor league starting pitching, Alex Torres is pitching very well of late, yielding zero runs and just four hits in his last two outings, while striking out 11 and walking one batter.
Insight: Torres has a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in six minor league starts this season. The most likely spot would be for 32-year-old Roberto Hernandez who is struggling having yielded four or more runs in four of six outings.
Luke Scott, DH5/8/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is a career .059 hitter (1-for-17) against Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero.
Insight: Although Scott came back from injury with a hot bat, hitting .353 with a pair of home runs in his first seven games, this matchup is extremely unfavorable and should be avoided.
Roberto Hernandez, SP5/7/2013 10:38:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Roberto Hernandez limited Toronto to five hits and one earned run, walked one and struck out seven in six innings Tuesday.
Insight: Hernandez is 1-4 with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP through six starts. He has 37 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings, but he's too risky to use outside AL-only formats.
Ben Zobrist, RF5/7/2013 6:00:00 PM
Description: Rays IF/OF Ben Zobrist is back in the lineup Tuesday night.
Insight: Zobrist missed the last two games due to the death of his grandmother.
Carlos Pena, 1B5/7/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Houston first baseman Carlos Pena is rarely a good value when facing a left-hander and his matchup history with Angels southpaw C.J. Wilson is no exception. He's just 1-for-10 with four strikeouts in their matchups.
Insight: Pena is a career .207 hitter against lefties with an OPS 134 points lower than against right-handers. Sit him on Tuesday.
Yunel Escobar, SS5/6/2013 2:20:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (hand) is not expected back until Wednesday at the earliest due to a left hand contusion, according to beat writer Marc Topkin.
Insight: Escobar was hit in the left hand and had to leave Saturday's game. X-rays came back negative. He hasn't been very good this season, batting just .174 with a pair of homers and seven RBI.
Ben Zobrist, RF5/6/2013 2:18:00 PM
Description: Rays IF/OF Ben Zobrist is not in Monday's lineup against the Rockies due to the death of his grandmother.
Insight: Zobrist (.261, 3 HR, 21 RBI) has not been placed on the bereavement list, but could miss one or two more games.
Ben Zobrist, RF5/5/2013 4:22:00 PM
Description: Rays IF/OF Ben Zobrist is not in Sunday's lineup against the Rockies due to the death of his grandmother. SOURCE: Roger Mooney, Tampa Tribune
Insight: Zobrist has not been placed on the disabled list, but he could miss Monday's game as well.
Yunel Escobar, SS5/4/2013 10:23:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (hand) is day-to-day with a left hand contusion, according to beat writer Marc Topkin.
Insight: Escobar was hit in the left hand and had to leave Saturday's game. X-rays came back negative.
Yunel Escobar, SS5/4/2013 9:02:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar had to leave Saturday's game after being hit in the left wrist by a pitch from Rockies starter Jon Garland.
Insight: Escobar was "in obvious pain" and slammed his helmet to the ground, according to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune. Escobar is only batting .174 with two homers, so fantasy owners won't miss him if he has to miss an extended amount of time.
Luke Scott, DHHot5/4/2013 11:01:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) against Rockies starter Jon Garland with a pair of homers and a 1.533 OPS.
Insight: He missed most of the first month because of a calf strain. Scott should be in the lineup most days for Tampa Bay. He could be a nice add if your team needs power.
Jake Odorizzi, SP5/3/2013 4:45:00 PM
Description: Rays pitching prospect Jake Odorizzi is second in the International League with 36 strikeouts in 27 innings. He also has a 3.33 ERA.
Insight: Odorizzi has been traded twice for frontline starters, going from Milwaukee to Kansas City for Zack Greinke and from Kansas City to Tampa Bay for James Shields. Chris Archer, who has a 4.06 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 31 innings, will likely get the callup before Odorizzi if the Rays need a starter.
James Loney, 1BHot5/3/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Rays first baseman James Loney's bat has come to life -- .524 over his last 42 at-bats -- but Rockies starter Jeff Francis has limited him to one hit in 17 at-bats.
Insight: The Rays briefly resurrected the career of another light-hitting first baseman Casey Kotchman in 2011, and they are doing it with Loney this year. Loney's average is up to .375 after he went 5-for-30 (.167) over his first 13 games. While he has never hit Francis or lefties in general very well, he's a solid short-term add for this weekend with right-handers Jon Garland and Tyler Chatwood starting the next two games at Coors Field.
Kelly Johnson, 2B5/2/2013 11:48:00 AM
Description: Hopefully Kelly Johnson isn't your only option at second base today. He only has one hit in 11 at bats against Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Johnson (.229, 3 HR, 9 RBI) has struck out twice or more in three out of his last four games. Oddly enough, he has also contributed at least one RBI in three of his past four outings. Do what you feel is right but this isn't a good matchup for Johnson.
Ben Zobrist, RF5/2/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: Rays utility man Ben Zobrist should be avoided in fantasy leagues Thursday against Kansas City. He's never fared well against Royals starter Ervin Santana (.154 lifetime average).
Insight: To make matters worse, Santana enters Thursday's game on a four-game unbeaten streak. Save Zobrist (.262, 3 HR, 20 RBI) for another day.
Yunel Escobar, SS5/2/2013 11:40:00 AM
Description: Need a shortstop for Thursday? How about Yunel Escobar? The Tampa Bay infielder is a .412 career hitter against Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: The 30-year-old is available in 99 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues. If you're looking for a one-day rental, Escobar (.173, 2 HR, 7 RBI) should be a nice pickup.
Evan Longoria, 3B5/2/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: It would be a mistake not to start Evan Longoria on Thursday. The Rays first baseman bats .417 against Royals righty Ervin Santana.
Insight: Longoria is a .325 career hitter versus the Royals. He should be able to take advantage of this excellent matchup.
Luke Scott, DH5/2/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Rays DH Luke Scott clubbed three hits including his first home run of the season Wednesday against Kansas City.
Insight: He missed most of the first month because of a calf strain. Scott should be in the lineup most days for Tampa Bay. He could be a nice add if your team needs power.
Luke Scott, DH4/30/2013 5:12:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott (calf) has been activated from the DL and is starting on Tuesday.
Insight: Scott has missed all of April with a strained right calf. He has played less than 100 games and hit below .230 in each of the last two seasons.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/30/2013 5:10:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (hamstring) will return to the lineup Tuesday night.
Insight: Escobar hasn't played since April 24. He's only batting .164 this season, but is 5-for-14 with two homers and four RBIs in his last four games.
Carlos Pena, 1B4/29/2013 12:14:00 PM
Description: Houston first baseman Carlos Pena is a .326 hitter (14-for-43) against Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte with six home runs and a 1.257 OPS.
Insight: Those numbers are completely out of character for Pena who is a career .206 hitter against lefties with an OPS 136 points lower. He collected two hits on Sunday to break up a five-game hitless streak and this matchup makes him a nice play on Monday.
David Price, SP4/28/2013 8:52:00 PM
Description: Rays starter David Price won his first game of the 2013 season Sunday against the White Sox with seven innings of three-run ball.
Insight: Price (1-2, 5.21 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) won 20 games the AL Cy Young Award last year but has been hit hard in 2013, allowing 43 hits in 38 innings. He has a 20/2 K/BB over his last three starts.
Matt Joyce, OF4/28/2013 8:41:00 PM
Description: Rays outfielder Matt Joyce slammed a two-run homer, walked twice and scored three runs Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Joyce has gone 4-for-13 with two homers, two RBIs and six runs over his last three games. He's batting .209 this year.
Ben Zobrist, RF4/28/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay outfielder Ben Zobrist collected three hits and two RBIs in five at-bats Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Zobrist went 2-for-20 in the five games prior to Saturday but he is five for his last 10 with a homer and four RBIs.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/27/2013 4:53:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar will miss his third game in a row because of hamstring tightness.
Insight: We wouldn't expect to see Escobar in the lineup on Sunday, either. Escobar could find himself on the DL soon if his hamstring doesn't improve quickly.
Ben Zobrist, RF4/27/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay outfielder Ben Zobrist is a career .313 hitter (5-for-16) with three homers against White Sox starter Gavin Floyd.
Insight: Zobrist is hitless in his last two games and struggling so far this season, but this matchup could get him going. He is an excellent fantasy value who contributes across the board. Get him back in your lineup.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/26/2013 5:50:00 PM
Description: Tampa Bay shortstop Yunel Escobar will have to watch Friday's game from the sidelines.
Insight: Escobar (.164, 2 HR, 7 RBI) has been bothered by hamstring tightness. For now we'll consider him day-to-day. Ben Zobrist will start at shortstop in Escobar's place.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/26/2013 1:31:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (right hamstring) was not in Thursday's starting lineup and is doubtful for Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Escobar left Wednesday's game with hamstring tightness. The shortstop is just 1-for-9 against Friday's starter Jake Peavy, so another day of rest would appear to be the best option for Tampa Bay and fantasy owners.
Evan Longoria, 3B4/26/2013 11:55:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria is just 1-for-9, a single, in his matchups with White Sox starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Longoria has exactly one hit in 11 of the last 12 games, but at least he's starting to hit for power after not hitting a home run over his first 11 games. In this unfavorable matchup, however, fantasy owners should be happy if he gets one hit.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/25/2013 4:57:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar (hamstring) is not in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: Escobar left Wednesday's game with hamstring tightness and is day-to-day. The shortstop went 1-for-3 in the game and is 5-for-14 with two homers over his last four games. However, he's still hitting just .164.
Carlos Pena, 1B4/25/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: Houston first baseman Carlos Pena is a .182 hitter (6-for-33) against Boston starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: Pena mostly faced Buchholz when he was a member of the Rays. This season, Pena has produced his usual low batting average (.208) and high strikeout total (21), but has only two homers.
Luke Scott, DH4/25/2013 9:21:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott (calf) is expected to be activated Tuesday, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Scott has missed all of April with a strained right calf. He has played less than 100 games and hit below .230 in each of the last two seasons.
Alex Cobb, SPHot4/24/2013 10:23:00 PM
Description: Rays starter Alex Cobb breezed through the Yankees with 8 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday night. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out seven to improve to 3-1.
Insight: Cobb's tremendous spring has carried over to the regular season, as he has a 1.82 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.
Yunel Escobar, SS4/24/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar left Wednesday's game with right hamstring tightness, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: Escobar is day-to-day. The shortstop went 1-for-3 in the game and is 5-for-14 with two homers over his last four games. However, he's still hitting just .164.
Alexander Torres, RP4/24/2013 1:34:00 PM
Description: If the Tampa Bay Rays ever need to go to the minors for starting pitching, Alex Torres is doing good things for the Durham Bulls. In 16 innings, he's yielded just five hits, walked five and struck out 19 batters (1.69 ERA, 0.625 WHIP).
Insight: Unfortunately for 25-year-old left-handered Torres the Rays' starting rotation is strong and currently healthy. Barring injury he's likely to spend the entire season with the Bulls.
Evan Longoria, 3B4/24/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria has been frustrated for most of his career by Yankees starter Andy Pettitte. In 18 career at-bats, Longoria has managed just two hits and struck out 10 times.
Insight: After not hitting a home run over his first 11 games, Longoria (.282, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 0.879 OPS) has rebounded with five in the last nine contests, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Ben Zobrist, RF4/24/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Tampa Bay outfielder Ben Zobrist is a career .368 hitter (7-for-19) with a pair of long balls against Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
Insight: As expected Zobrist had a tough night on Tuesday (he's still hitless against Phil Hughes), but should rebound against Pettitte. He is an excellent fantasy value who contributes across the board. Get him back in your lineup.
