NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Philadelphia
(Monday, March 24th)
Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dwight King scored the winning goal halfway through the third period as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, at Wells Fargo Center.
Jeff Carter and Justin Williams scored for the Kings, who won their third straight game. Jonathan Quick stopped 30 shots in the win.
Matt Read and Jakub Voracek had goals in the third period for the Flyers, who finished a four-game homestand against Western Conference teams with a mark of 3-1-0. Ray Emery turned away 38 shots in the loss.
The Flyers trailed by two goals entering the third period, but made it a one- goal game just 29 seconds in as Read tipped in a Braydon Coburn shot for his 20th of the season.
Philly then tied the game at 8:18 on another tip after Scott Hartnell's floater from the left point saw Voracek get a stick on it for his 20th of the campaign.
Los Angeles, though, went back on top two minutes later off a 2-on-1 break as Slava Voynov sent a pass from the right wing to the left where King wristed it home for his 13th of the season.
The Flyers totaled 14 shots on net in the third, and had several chances late in the game with Emery pulled for an extra attacker, but were unable to tie it up and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
"We knew we weren't playing well," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux. "So we told each other let's start picking it up a little bit. Obviously first shift we were able to get a goal to kind of get us back in the game. I thought when we tied it up I thought we were going to keep going but they were able to get the game winner."
After a scoreless first period, the Kings took a 1-0 lead after Alec Martinez's shot from the right point was blocked, but the puck came to the left circle and Carter buried it at 1:49.
Philadelphia nearly tied it a minute later as Vinny Lecavalier was all alone in front, but he didn't get all of the puck and it hit off the right post, rolled just under the goalpost before hitting off the left post and staying out.
"Yeah, I was saying a little earlier that we got pretty lucky there," said Quick. "I think if I remember correctly it looked like somebody got a stick on his stick so I don't know exactly who it was."
The Kings nearly took a two-goal lead with 6 1/2 minutes left in the second as Martinez shot home a rebound, but Carter was whistled for cross-checking.
Los Angeles, though, did take a 2-0 lead after Robyn Regehr's shot from the right point was stopped, but Williams was there to bang in the rebound at 17:28.
The Flyers have four players with at least 20 goals this season ... Philadelphia plays in New York against the Rangers on Wednesday ... Los Angeles continues its three-game road trip in Washington on Tuesday ... The Flyers had taken a 2-0 win in LA on Feb. 1 ... Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.
