American League Game Summary - Houston at LA Angels of Anaheim
(Wednesday, May 21st)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 2, Houston 1
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver tossed his first complete game since 2012 as the Angels eked past the Houston Astros, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game AL West series on Wednesday.
Weaver (5-3) struck out five and allowed just two hits and one walk, his only real mistake coming in the fourth when George Springer sent a hanging breaking ball over the wall in left-center for his fourth home run of the year.
Springer's blast evened things at 1-1, but Albert Pujols launched the 505th homer of his career in the sixth to break the tie.
The solo shot was enough to give the loss to Collin McHugh (2-3), who gave up just two runs on four hits over seven solid frames.
"(McHugh) was really good tonight, and the other guy was even better," Astros manager Bo Porter said.
Erick Aybar's two-out, RBI single in the third inning gave the Angels the early lead, and after Springer and Pujols traded homers, Weaver took care of the rest.
The right-hander needed just 85 pitches to get through eight innings and stayed on the hill for the ninth to close out his gem.
After plunking Springer with one away, he caught the rookie cheating off first base and picked him off for the second out.
Dexter Fowler then popped up Weaver's 94th and final pitch of the game.
"I wanted to keep us in the game," Weaver said. "It was a good pitchers' duel, and I'm glad we came out on top."
Pujols passed Eddie Murray for sole possession of 25th place on MLB's all-time home run list ... Weaver, whose last complete game came on Aug. 6, 2012 against Oakland, has allowed two runs or less in each of his last seven outings ... Weaver's third strikeout was the 1,284th of his career, moving him past Mike Witt for third place on the Angels' all-time strikeout list ... Angels outfielder Mike Trout sat for the first time this season to rest a tight hamstring ... Astros leadoff hitter Jose Altuve went 0-for-4 to end a 12-game hitting streak ... Game time: 2:26.
