National League Game Summary - Miami at Atlanta
(Saturday, August 10th)
Final Score: Miami 1, Atlanta 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Adeiny Hechavarria scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning and the Miami Marlins stopped the Atlanta Braves' win streak at 14 with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
The Braves sent Jordan Walden (4-2) to the mound in the ninth. Hechavarria led off with a triple to left-center field and raced home on a wild pitch.
Steve Cishek worked around a two-out single in the bottom half to record his 24th save of the season for the Marlins, who snapped a six-game skid.
Both starting pitchers were dominant. Miami's Nathan Eovaldi gave up just one hit while tying a career high with eight strikeouts over seven innings. Atlanta's Alex Wood allowed two hits while tying a career best with seven strikeouts over six full frames.
"It stinks that we lost tonight, but that streak had to come to an end at some point," said Wood. "We'll just regroup for tomorrow and hopefully start a new streak."
Mike Dunn (3-3) recorded the final two outs in the eighth to pick up the win for Miami, which handed Atlanta its first loss since July 25.
After each team left men on first and second in the first inning, the game was delayed 54 minutes by rain.
Eovaldi, who has allowed just three runs over his last four starts, retired the final 14 batters he faced. Chad Qualls and Dunn combined to pitch a scoreless eighth.
"You go out there and try to do your best every time," said Eovaldi. "You just want to put zeros on the board and give your team the best opportunity to win. That's what I was able to do today."
The Braves failed to move a runner past first after the first inning.
The Braves are 7-4 against the Marlins this season ... Atlanta third baseman Chris Johnson was ejected by home plate umpire Jim Joyce after striking out to end the first inning ... Atlanta had put together its longest string of consecutive victories since a 15-game run from April 16-May 2, 2000 ... The Braves activated outfielder Jordan Schafer from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Jose Constanza to Triple-A Gwinnett ...
