Matt Cassel ended the day with a stunning 33 fantasy points.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
It didn't seem to matter to Matt Cassel that it was snowing and sleeting, or that the wind was blowing. Cassel was magnificent in the first half on Sunday throwing for 192 yards and two scores as New England opened up a 31-0 lead over Arizona. Despite the snow and a gusting wind, Cassel ended the day with a stunning 33 fantasy points, a Week 16 high for quarterbacks, on 20-for-36 passing for 345 yards and three TDs.
And the single-digit temperatures in Kansas City didn't seem to hurt Tyler Thigpen's fantasy numbers (25 points), although his team lost to the Miami Dolphins 38-31.
Ben Roethlisberger also threw for 300+ yards with two TDs and two INTs in a losing effort at Tennessee.
Of course, if you were playing indoors, like Drew Brees, and particularly if you were playing indoors against the 31st-ranked defense, you had another great day. Despite the Saints rushing for their first four scores, Brees ended the day with a solid 25 point day. He threw for 351 yards, leaving him 401 yards short of Dan Marino's all-time single-season passing mark of 5,084 yards (1984). Brees and his Saints will host Carolina next weekend for a chance at the record.
Peyton Manning (31 points) had the second-best Week 16 quarterback performance, when he threw for 364 yards and three scores in the Thursday night game against divisional rival Jacksonville.
A total of seven QBs earned the 300-plus yard bonus this week.
There were also those quarterbacks who couldn't deal with both the defense and the elements. Arizona's All-Pro, Kurt Warner, managed just 30 yards on 6-for-18 passing. Brett Favre, the noted "bad weather" quarterback, could only muster 18-for-31 for 187 yards, no TDs and two INTs. Neither quarterback in Cleveland could crack the 100-yard passing mark. Ryan Fitzpatrick was 5-for-9 for 55 yards and Ken Dorsey was 10-for-17 for 68 yards.
A new name headed the rushing yardage leaderboard - Cedric Benson. Although he didn't get into the endzone, he carried the ball 38 times for Week 16 high of 171 yards. Meanwhile, Le'Ron McClain edged Benson in fantasy points because his 139 yards and one TD earned him 24 fantasy points. There were seven 100-yard rushers.
In spite of bad weather all around the country, pass receivers didn't seem to be effected. Antonio Bryant led the one o'clock session with 127 yards and one score on six receptions. The big one was a 71-yard bomb from Jeff Garcia late in the third quarter which turned a mediocre afternoon into a great day.
But Minnesota's tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe, topped everyone in Week 16 with a seven-catch, 136-yard, two touchdown effort worth 31 fantasy points. However, it wasn't enough to keep the Vikings from a 24-17 loss to the still surprising Atlanta Falcons.
Congratulations to those who won their league's title. To those that are still "yet to be determined" good luck in Monday night's game. And those who didn't make this year's title game...there is always next year.
