Hudson's Season Surprises Fantasy Owners

Tim Hudson has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - I read in a game preview the other day that Tim Hudson would be attempting to set a Braves' pitching record if he went six or more innings on Wednesday against the Nationals without yielding more than one run. He had already put together five such games in a row. That's pretty amazing considering the stars like Warren Spahn, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine just to name a few, who have pitched for the Braves organization.

He didn't reach the milestone, going seven innings and yielding eight hits and two earned runs in a no-decision, but it goes to show how well Hudson has pitched this season after throwing just 42.1 innings due to injury last year.

Hudson was barely on the fantasy radar screen this April, with an ADP (Average Draft Position) of 181.6, or a 16th-round selection. But he's been one of the best pitchers in the National League with a record of 14-5, a career-low ERA of 2.15 and a WHIP of 1.09.

Which means that even at 36-years old next July, Hudson will be a valuable fantasy commodity in 2011. He won't quite be in the Ubaldo Jimenez, Roy Halladay, Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright class, because he doesn't strike out enough batters anymore, but he does everything else very well and should be effective again next season.

If you got Hudson cheaply in this year's draft, or picked him up on waivers, then he'll be inexpensive to hold onto in your keeper league. For the rest of the fantasy owners who are enjoying Hudson's success, enjoy the ride as he should be one of the finalists, along with Mat Latos, for the TSN "Best Bargain" Award for starting pitchers.
