Description: Mets center fielder Juan Lagares went 4-for-4 with two steals on Tuesday against the Marlins.
Insight: Lagares had a perfect night at the plate, registering four hits, including a double, walk, two RBI, three runs and two steals. Lagares has steals in four of his last five games. Terry Collins said he wants his center fielder to continue to use his speed on the base paths which is great news for fantasy owners.
Description: Milwaukee removed center fielder Carlos Gomez will be shut down a week before resuming baseball drills according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Insight: Gomez will likely be out at least two weeks, which hurts any owner that needed him for a postseason run. Oh, the Brewers will certainly miss him too as Tuesday was the first day since April 5 that Milwaukee was not in first place of the NL Central.
Description: The Athletics are hoping center fielder Coco Crisp (neck) will return to the lineup by this weekend according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Crisp received more injections into his neck on Tuesday. Fantasy owners might have to look elsewhere for center field production. Even if Crisp is healthy by the weekend, expect the Athletics to bring him back slowly.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is back in the Yankees lineup on Tuesday.
Insight: Ellsbury missed the last two starts with a left ankle injury, though he was used as a pinch hitter and clubbed a double on Sunday. With the off day on Monday, Ellsbury had three straight days to recover. He is hitting .288/.348/.435 with 14 home runs and 37 steals.
Description: Milwaukee removed center fielder Carlos Gomez in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Giants due to a sore left wrist and again not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Insight: Gomez was not lighting it up before the injury anyway, going hitless in his last five games. Gerardo Parra will replace him.
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings is just 2-for-18 with six strikeouts when facing R.A. Dickey's knuckleball.
Insight: Jennings hasn't played since Aug. 28 while dealing with left knee soreness. It is unclear when he will return. Fantasy owners, and Rays fans, are still waiting for Jennings to blossom into the "next" Carl Crawford as was advertised when he first came to the big leagues.
Description: Colorado center fielder Charlie Blackmon was hitless in his first five at-bats Monday before hitting a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Insight: Blackmon homered in each of the previous two games and has driven in six runs in his last five. He's gone 22-for-67 (.328) with three doubles, three homers, 10 RBI, 12 runs and two steals in his last 17 games.
Description: Milwaukee removed center fielder Carlos Gomez in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Giants due to a sore left wrist and not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Insight: Gomez was not lighting it up before the injury anyway, going hitless in his last five games. Gerardo Parra will replace him.
Description: Atlanta center fielder B.J. Upton should be getting Monday afternoon off as he's never figured out Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels.
Insight: Upton is hitless in 18 tries against Hamels. The best he's managed is a walk and he's struck out five times. We suspect you weren't tempted on using Upton anyway, what with his .207 batting average and .607 OPS. Update: Upton is not in the starting lineup.
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan has helped the Giants offense since his return from the disabled list by batting .305 in his last 21 games, but probably won't be much help to fantasy owners Monday in an unfavorable matchup.
Insight: Pagan is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts against Colorado left-hander Franklin Morales.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has struggled against Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn, batting just .125 in 32 at-bats including 12 strikeouts.
Insight: McCutchen hasn't done much over the past week as he continues to deal with health issues. The reigning National League MVP is 4-for-16 over the past five games without an extra-base hit. Look elsewhere for offensive help.
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna is a .091 hitter (1-for-11) against Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler.
Insight: Ozuna is one of the most streaky hitters around, but has become a viable fantasy option this season with a .261 batting average, 19 HR, 72 RBI and 62 runs scored. Monday, however, is an unfavorable matchup.
Description: Colorado center fielder Charlie Blackmon went 2-for-4 with a solo home run on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Blackmon has a home run in each of his last two games. He also has four straight games with an RBI. It may be mostly due to the park he hits in, but Blackmon is having a good season, hitting .289 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI.
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI against the A's on Sunday.
Insight: Trout has his average back to .290 and the home run Sunday gives him 31 on the season, a new career high. His 97 RBI also ties a career high. Trout's .934 OPS is third highest in the American League.
Description: White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton was 2-for-5 with two doubles against the Tigers on Sunday.
Insight: Eaton also scored two runs. He has hits in his last seven games, and over that stretch, is batting .429 with five extra-base hits and two steals. He is hitting .313 with 64 runs in 400 at-bats, but don't count on him scoring much in September as the White Sox dealt Adam Dunn and Alejandro De Aza on Sunday.
Description: Milwaukee removed center fielder Carlos Gomez in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Giants due to a sore left wrist according to MLB.com.
Insight: Gomez was not lighting it up before the injury anyway, going hitless in his last five games. Gerardo Parra replaced him, and it is unclear how severe the injury is. As of now, we expect Gomez to return in a day or two.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-4 on Sunday against the Reds.
Insight: McCutchen was not able to score or drive in a run as the Pirates lost 3-2. A big series looms in St. Louis starting Monday, so even though he is likely still battling a rib injury, count on the MVP to play big.
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: The oft-injured outfielder hurt his shoulder running into the wall Friday night and will head back to the bench. He's batting .254 with 9 HR, 45 RBI and 61 runs scored, but he's been in and out of the lineup in the second half due to inuries. Sam Fuld will leadoff and Craig Gentry will cover center field.
Description: Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig is back in the Dodgers lineup Saturday.
Insight: Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly gave Puig Friday off to try and give him a breather. Puig is hitless in his last 17 at-bats. Andre Ethier played center field on Friday and returns to the bench on Saturday.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the starting lineup on Saturday.
Insight: Ellsbury was limping around in the clubhouse on Friday night after injuring his left ankle while sliding into home plate in the ninth. The Yankees have off on Monday, so it's possible manager Joe Giradi will be extremely cautious and sit him on Sunday as well, so Ellsbury gets three straight days of rest.
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is hitting .348 (8-for-23) in his career against Royals starter James Shields.
Insight: Bourn had his five-game hitting streak snapped on Friday, going 0-for-5. Even with the 0-for-5, Bourn is hitting .333 in the last week with three extra-base hits. On the season, he is batting .268 with three home runs and 25 RBI in 332 at-bats.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is a career .250 hitter (4-for-16) with a home run against Reds starter Alfredo Simon.
Insight: McCutchen looked frustrated on Friday night, popping up a couple times with runners on base. The MVP did register a bloop single to go 1-for-4. It's pretty clear that McCutchen is still not completely healthy with his ribs, but he is in the lineup, and he should be in yours too.
Description: Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo will make his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Sunday according to the Providence Journal.
Insight: He will play in the Gulf Coast League finals on Sunday and make his way to the postseason series at either Double-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket. Eventually, he is expected to join the Red Sox in September.
Description: Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts hit a grand slam to lead Boston over Tampa Bay, 8-4, on Friday.
Insight: Betts' first career grand slam pretty much put the game out of reach as the home run increased the Boston lead to 8-0 in the second inning. The Red Sox prospect finished the night 2-for-5 and is now hitting .253 with three home runs and seven RBI in 79 at-bats this year.
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI against the Braves on Friday.
Insight: Ozuna has cooled off since four straight multi-hit games, which included three straight contests with a home run, last week, but he was feeling it on Friday. The outfielder is one of the most streaky hitters around, so this has almost become expected. He has seven multi-hit games this month but is hitting .227.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 2-for-5 with a home run in the victory over the Blue Jays on Friday.
Insight: The home run was Ellsbury's 14th on the season and fourth in the last week. The center fielder is hitting .313 in August, including .455 in his last 11 games. Ellsbury also has 14 RBI, 12 runs and nine stolen bases this month.
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and two steals in the Reds loss on Friday.
Insight: With the two steals Friday, Hamilton now has 53 on the season, which is second only to Dee Gordon. Hamilton is also hitting .268 with 38 extra-base hits, 46 RBI, and 70 runs in 489 at-bats this year.
Description: Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig is just 1-for-11 with four strikeouts against Padres starter Andrew Cashner.
Insight: Puig is hitting .301/.388/.495 with 13 home runs and 59 RBI and 71 runs this year. He's hitless in his last three games (0-for-14) and this unfavorable matchup doesn't figure to help those numbers.
Description: In a matchup of All-Stars, Oakland left-hander Jon Lester has gotten the best of Angels center fielder Mike Trout.
Insight: Trout is 0-for-6 with three strikeouts in their matchups. Trout is just starting to break out of a slump, going 6-for-12 over the past three games. Hopefully, Lester won't slow the progress, but Trout isn't a great option Friday.
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 2-for-2 with a double and his 51st steal of the season Thursday against the Cubs.
Insight: Fantasy owners were a bit scared back in March that Hamilton would be able to hit enough to make his speed worthwhile. That hasn't turned out to be a problem. He's batting .267 with 25 doubles, seven triples, six homers and 69 runs scored in addition to the steals.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is back in the Pirates lineup on Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Insight: We are all happy to see him back in the lineup as Pirate fans collectively held their breathe on Tuesday. McCutchen left Tuesday night's game after running into the outfield wall and aggravating his rib injury. McCutchen said he exited the game as a precautionary reason. The reigning NL MVP is hitting just .250 (7-for-28) since his return from the DL, but he does have three home runs.
Description: Mariners center fielder Austin Jackson is a career .417 hitter (10-for-24) with four extra-base hits against Rangers starter Colby Lewis
Insight: Jackson takes a seven-game hitting streak into Wednesday's game. In the series against the Rangers, the center fielder is 2-for-8 with a triple and run scored. Jackson is hitting .266 with 65 runs and 13 steals this year.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with two solo homers Tuesday at Detroit.
Insight: Ellsbury came into the game 8-for-13 (.615) with a pair of homers against Tigers starter Rick Porcello. The center fielder has gone 15-for-31 with three homers, seven RBI and six runs in his last eight games.
Description: Houston center fielder Dexter Fowler has batted .280 with two homers, four RBI, six runs and a steal since he returned from the DL.
Insight: Fowler missed more than six weeks due to an intercostal strain. He went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Tuesday against Oakland and is batting .272 with eight homers, 28 RBI, 49 runs, seven steals and a .785 OPS this season.
Description: Cubs center fielder Arismendy Alcantara has homered in back-to-back games.
Insight: Alcantara has gone 6-for-11 with three RBI and four runs in his last three games. The rookie has five homers, seven steals and 20 runs in 171 at-bats, but he's also hitting .228 with 51 strikeouts.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen left Tuesday's game against the Cardinals with rib discomfort, but he said he expects to be in the lineup Wednesday, according to Tom Singer of mlb.com.
Insight: McCutchen missed two weeks due to an avulsion fracture of his rib before returning on Aug. 19. He said he was just "being smart" in leaving Tuesday's game after feeling some soreness.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI Monday at Kansas City and has a favorable matchup Tuesday against Tigers starter Rick Porcello.
Insight: Ellsbury is 8-for-13 (.615) with a pair of homers against Porcello. He's hit .280 with 25 doubles, two triples, 11 dingers, 58 RBI and 35 steals in 126 games. Beware, the weather forecast calls for a 70-80 percent chance of rain.
Description: Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a steal Monday at Toronto.
Insight: Betts, Boston's top prospect, has gone 4-for-9 with four walks and three steals in his last three games. He's started eight straight games in center field since he was recalled and he also has shortstop eligibility in Yahoo leagues.
Description: White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton (oblique) will be back in the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: Eaton has been out since Aug. 9 due to a strained oblique. He went 39-for-93 (.419) with seven doubles, a triple, nine RBI, nine walks, 14 runs and four steals over his last 24 games before going on the DL.
Description: Colorado center fielder Charlie Blackmon has gone 15-for-37 (.405) with three doubles, a homer, four RBI, nine runs and two steals over his last nine games.
Insight: The confines of Coors Field have once again helped Blackmon put a stop to his slump. Eight of the nine games during his hot streak came at home. He went 4-for-45 (.089) with one RBI in 11 games from July 31 to Aug. 12, with eight of the 11 coming on the road.
Description: Tigers center fielder Rajai Davis has hit .236 in August, but he went 2-for-6 with a homer and two RBI Sunday at Minnesota.
Insight: Throughout his career, Davis has been a much better hitter against lefties than righties and this year has been no different. He's hitting .343 with 13 doubles, two triples and three homers against southpaws and .245 with 10 doubles, four homers and 25 RBI against righties. The Tigers had to make Davis the starting center fielder when they traded Austin Jackson in the David Price deal, and Davis may be getting exposed as an everyday player.
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton, who went 0-for-4 Sunday, has batted .217 since the All-Star break.
Insight: Hamilton hit .285 with five homers, 38 RBI, 47 runs, 38 steals and a .742 OPS prior to the break, but his strikeout, line drive and infield fly-ball rates have all been worse in the second half.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has "owned" Brewers starter Mike Fiers.
Insight: McCutchen is 6-for-11 with four home runs, nine RBI and a 2.182 OPS versus the young Fiers. It should be noted, however, Fiers has pitched great since returning to the Brewers rotation in August (3-0, 0.86 ERA, 0.52 WHIP) so it may not be quite so lopsided this time around.
Description: Hot-hitting Nationals center fielder Denard Span hasa a favorable matchup Sunday versus Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong.
Insight: Span is 5-for-10 with three extra-base hits in their matchups. Span has batted .377 in the 34 games since the All-Star break to raise his average to .299 for the season. He's been particular good at home this season (.341) and that's where Sunday's game will take place.
Description: Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp has batted .161 with one homer, 11 RBI, 10 runs, zero steals and a .526 OPS since the All-Star break.
Insight: While he's gone 6-for-17 with three doubles, a triple, a homer and six RBI in his last four games, including 2-for-4 with a double and a solo shot Friday night, he's 5-for-34 (.147) against Angels starter C.J. Wilson. That combined with his slump since the All-Star break makes him an undesirable option Saturday.
Description: Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings is hitting .421 with a double in 19 at-bats against Toronto starter Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Jennings is hitting .264 with five homers and an .861 OPS against lefties this season while batting .234 with five homers and a .646 OPS against righties. His excellent numbers against Buehrle and Buehrle's struggles over the past two months make Jennings a solid option in the outfield on Saturday.
Description: Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna has homered in three straight games and driven in 10 runs in his last four.
Insight: Ozuna went 3-for-5 with a homer, five RBI and two runs Friday at Colorado. The 23-year-old hit .151 with zero homers and five RBI in his first 16 games this month, but he now has 19 homers and 70 RBI in 453 at-bats this year.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs Friday at Milwaukee.
Insight: McCutchen went hitless in his first two games after returning from a fractured rib, but the reigning MVP came through to help the Pirates win the first game of what is their biggest series of the season so far.
Description: Giants center fielder Angel Pagan left Friday's game with calf tightness, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Pagan went 2-for-5 before being replaced in center field by Gregor Blanco in the bottom of the ninth. The Giants were up 10-2 at the time so it was probably a precautionary measure. He's day-to-day.
Description: Phillies center fielder Ben Revere ranks fifth in the NL with 145 hits.
Insight: Revere is second in the league with a .315 average, just five points behind leader Justin Morneau. He's in this position because he's gone 76-for-204 (.373) in his last 49 games, including 3-for-4 Friday night.
Description: The Red Sox have agreed to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract with Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, according to WEEI.com.
Insight: Castillo's deal is the largest ever given to a Cuban defector, besting Jose Abreu's six-year, $68 million contract. There's a chance the 27-year-old Castillo will get a shot in the majors this season.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is a career .306 hitter (15-for-49) with seven extra-base hits including three home runs and seven RBI against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo. McCutchen also has five stolen bases off Gallardo.
Insight: McCutchen has gone hitless in two games since his return from the rib fracture. This is by far the biggest series of the season for the slipping Pirates. Expect the MVP to show up.
Description: Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay is batting .400 (6-for-15) against Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick.
Insight: Jay extended his hitting streak to 12 games on Wednesday with a 3-for-4 performance against the Reds. During the streak, Jay is batting .514 (18-for-35). It would be wise to ride out his hot streak.
Description: Milwaukee center fielder Carlos Gomez is a career 5-for-11 (.455) hitter with a double, home run and four RBI against Pirates starter Jeff Locke.
Insight: Gomez has hit very well in his last five games, going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles, three home runs and four RBI. The all-star center fielder has been a top-10 fantasy asset all season with a statline of .287, 21 home runs, 64 RBI, 82 runs, and 27 steals.
Description: Nationals center fielder Denard Span struggles against Giants starter Tim Hudson, hitting 2-for-17 (.118) against the right-hander in his career.
Insight: Span has, however, been on fire recently. He bounced back from his 0-for-4 on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 on Thursday and scoring the lone run of the game as Washington walked off with a victory for the fifth time in six days. Despite the career troubles Span has against Hudson, it might be tough to sit him. Since June 17, he has gone 78-for-231 (.338) including 65-for-178 (.365) since July 1 and 52-for-134 (.388) since the All-Star break to raise his average to .302.
Description: Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is a career 6-for-14 (.429) hitter against White Sox pitcher John Danks.
Insight: Ellsbury has a modest three-game hitting streak, but during that stretch, has six singles, two RBI, a run and three stolen bases. In his last two games, Ellsbury is 5-for-9. He has a good chance of keeping it going against Danks on Friday.
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout has batted just .174 (8-for-46) over the past two weeks (11 games).
Insight: Fantasy owners are probably getting a little frustrated, but looking at the big picture shows he's still a fantasy stud. He's batting .288 with 27 HR, 89 RBI, 84 runs scored, 12 SB and a .930 OPS. Still, for fantasy owners it's what have you done for me lately?
Description: Angels center fielder Mike Trout is 6-for-13 with two homers against Boston starter Clay Buchholz.
Insight: Trout has gone 4-for-11 with a double, a triple and two RBI over his last three games after running into a 4-for-37 (.108) slump prior to that. His strikeout rate is up from 19 percent last year to 24.8 percent this season which has contributed to his average dropping from .323 to .291. However, he's put up a much higher extra-base hit rate (12.2 percent in 2014, 10.5 percent in 2013) and is going to drive in more runs than he did in each of his first two seasons. He's a strong choice Wednesday against Buchholz.
Description: Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (rib) has been activated and is in Tuesday's starting lineup, playing his customary center field and batting third.
Insight: McCutchen has been out since Aug. 3 due to an avulsion fracture of his rib. The Pirates and fantasy owners desperately need his bat back in the lineup (.311, 17 HR, 67 RBI, 64 runs, 17 SB). Gregory Polanco is not in the lineup.
Description: Toronto minor league outfielder Kevin Pillar is hitting .327 in 391 at-bats this season at Triple-A Buffalo. In his last ten games, he is 14-for-39 (.359).
Insight: It seems unlikely that Pillar will be a September call up this year unless Toronto further falls out of playoff contention. Outfielders Melky Cabrera and Colby Rasmus will both be free agents at season's end, so Pillar will likely get his major league chance next season. It might make sense to let Cabrera leave via free agency since he plays the same position as Pillar, and Rasmus is a center fielder. Cabrera, however, is batting .316 while Rasmus is hitting .223.
Description: It is still a small sample size, but Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is hitting .556 with two home runs, three RBI and two walks in 11 plate appearances in his career against Chicago White Sox starter Jose Quintana.
Insight: Jones, however, is slumping in August, hitting just .224 with two home runs. This matchup could be just what the doctor ordered to get Jones in the groove again.
