Final Score: Calgary 3, Phoenix 2 (OT)
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Mark Giordano scored the winner with 23.1 seconds to play in overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday.
With time winding down, Mikael Backlund brought the puck in down the left wing and fired a pass over to his right for Curtis Glencross, who one-touched the puck back to Giordano and his wrister beat Mike Smith for the win.
Lee Stempniak and Jiri Hudler each scored, while Joey MacDonald made 29 saves for the Flames, who have won two of their last three.
Keith Yandle and Antoine Vermette scored and Smith stopped 22 shots for the Coyotes, who have lost two of their last three.
With 43 points, the Coyotes are tied with Dallas and Columbus as all three clubs sit two points back of Detroit, which lost in a shootout to Chicago on Friday, for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
"A tight game, we needed one of those posts to go in for us tonight and it didn't happen," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett.
Phoenix struck just 1:29 into the game when Chris Conner threw the puck out front from behind the net and Vermette's first shot was stopped, but he backhanded in his own rebound.
The Flames tied the game with 55.2 to play after Backlund fired the puck to the front of the net from the right boards and Hudler got his skate on it for his eighth of the year. The goal was reviewed to see if Hudler kicked it in, but the goal stood.
Calgary took a 2-1 lead with 1:08 to play in the second on the power play as T.J. Brodie's slap shot squirted behind Smith and Stempniak slammed it in for his eighth of the season.
"What else can we say about Brodie," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "This guy's logging some big minutes, on our power-play goal he made a great play, and he's definitely improving."
Phoenix, though, tied the game with 5:04 left in regulation as strong work in the Calgary end saw Derek Morris fire a pass from the left point over to the right circle where Yandle one-timed it home.
Calgary plays in Edmonton on Saturday ... Phoenix hosts San Jose on Monday ... Calgary took two of the three games with Phoenix this season ... Calgary scored on its only power play of the game, while Phoenix went 0-for-2.
