Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks signed captain Ryan Getzlaf to an eight-year extension on Friday.
The 27-year-old center was due to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
"We are very happy to have Ryan committed to this franchise long-term," said Ducks executive vice president/general manager Bob Murray. "He has often expressed his interest to stay in Anaheim for his entire career, a goal we share. He is a leader, a proven winner, and possesses a skill set that's hard to find. This is a great day for the Ducks."
Getzlaf has registered nine goals and 18 assists this season for a Ducks team that entered play Friday with the NHL's second-best record at 16-3-3.
The 19th overall pick in the talent-laden 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Getzlaf helped the Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2007.
For his career, the Saskatchewan native has totaled 146 goals and 353 assists in 534 games. He has added 18 goals and 53 points in 62 playoff games.
